A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of sulphur (S) inoculated with Acidithiobacillus on phosphorus (P) availability from natural phosphate (NP) using different fertilizer application methods on yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus) grown in a 'Tableland Forest' soil (Podzol Hydromorphic dystrophic) of the 'Zona da Mata' in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Plants were inoculated with rhizobia strains (NFN 747 and NFB 748) and control treatments added without rhizobia inoculation. The P treatments were: (1) NP pelleted with S inoculated with Acidithiobacillus (NP S*); (2) S with Acidithiobacillus pelleted with NP (S* NP); (3) NP and S mixture inoculated with Acidithiobacillus (S* + NP); (4) NP and S mixture without Acidithiobacillus (NP + S); (5) triple superphosphate (TS) fertilization and (6) control treatment without phosphorus application (P0). The fertilizers were applied: a) on the surface; b) in the plant furrow 10 cm below the seeds; c) in the furrow 10 cm below and beside the seeds. Nodule dry matter was higher with (NP + S*), and best results were obtained when fertilizers were applied beside and above seeds. The treatment (FN + S*) increased plant height, dry biomass of nodules, tubers, and shoots, and the total N uptake, especially when applied 10 cm below seeds. Total P uptake was highest with (S* NP) applied 10 cm below seeds. The available soil P was highest in the treatments (NP + S*) and (NP + S) with most evident results when applied 10 cm below seeds.</text>

METHODS: Study with a qualitative approach. In January and February 2007, supported by a guide, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 women and one man who were living in an agricultural community in Rio Branco do Sul, Southern Brazil. The interviewees were selected randomly from among the 20 ecological farming families in this municipality. RESULTS: Three analysis categories were identified: 'awareness of healthy eating'; 'purchasing power' and 'healthy land'. The significance of healthy eating for the female farmers involved the idea that foods should be natural, without agricultural pesticides or manufactured chemical products. The daily routine should include abundant consumption of fruits, greens and other vegetables, in addition to the basic rice, beans and meat, and the composition of dishes should aim towards prevention of obesity and chronic-degenerative diseases. Care regarding natural resources in order to ensure production of healthy foods, food safety, environmental sustainability and the future of life on the planet form part of the concept of healthy eating. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge, self-criticism and discernment accompanied the conceptions of healthy eating.</text>

<text>This article presents some results of the project entitled 'The use and appropriation of ICT by family agriculture in the Vale do Caí-RS', financed by the edict of MCTI/CNPq, FAPERGS and UNISC. The objective of this article was to outline the socioeconomic profile of family farmers and to analyze the use and appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by family farmers in the Vale do Caí. Eight municipalities with the largest number of family farming establishments were selected, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 375 family farmers. The data were tabulated through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and analyzed from simple statistical treatment and content analysis. It has been verified that family farmers analyzed have access to ICT. However, the use and dissemination of knowledge and technologies by global access to information network still represents a challenge to be overcome in the region.</text>

The aim of this paper is to analyze the emergence of the child labor problem in tobacco growing in Agudo (Rio Grande do Sul state), triggered by the promulgation of Act 6.481/2008, which addresses the worst child labor conditions. The methodological procedures used were the literature review, desk research and a case study, conducted in the municipality of Agudo. In the case study, we have tried to obtain quantitative and qualitative data through questionnaires and open interviews directed to 27 tobacco growers, and with teenagers and children under 18 years old. The survey results indicate the existence of a clash between different conceptions of child labor in small scale family farmers. The legal devices, the commitment terms and the tobacco supply chain contracts forbid child labor below the age of 18 based on international agreements and regulations which guarantee childhood development. From the perspective of the families, child labor is understood as 'help' and a way of socialization and training of the inheritor. Therefore, parents do not agree that child labor is a perverse form of labor exploitation of their children.</text>
