OBJECTIVE: To obtain background information about maternal health and health-seeking behaviors among indigenous mothers living in rural Mam-Mayan communities of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 100 pregnant and breastfeeding women in four communities was performed to determine prevalence and determinants of service utilization. RESULTS: Extreme poverty, poor education, and poor access to basic resources were prevalent. Out of 100 women 14-41 years old, 33% did not use the formal health care sector for antenatal care; the majority consulted a traditional birth attendant. Only 13% delivered in a hospital. Lower socioeconomic status, lack of fluency in Spanish, and no ownership of a motorized vehicle were associated with the highest likelihood of poor utilization of services. CONCLUSIONS: A variety of factors affect utilization of maternal health services by indigenous women in rural Quetzaltenango. These include socioeconomic disparities, ethnic and linguistic differences, and poor access to basic resources. The current reproductive needs of women should be addressed to improve their health and increase their chance of having healthy children.

La vegetación subacuática de Los Petenes, Campeche, México, se destaca por su gran diversidad florística, compuesto por una gran variedad de pastos marinos y varias especies del género Caulerpa sp. Caulerpa es un género de relevancia ecológica, con especies como la Caulerpa taxifolia, que es invasiva en el Mediterráneo, con un impacto negativo en varias plantas sub-acuáticas nativas, pero poco se sabe acerca de la demografía y la dinámica poblacional de las especies de Caulerpa y su contribución a las redes alimenticias. El objetivo general es conocer la demografía de Caulerpa sp., por medio del número de estolones, frondas completas e incompletas, el diámetro de los estolones y la biomasa. El estudio se realizó en la Reserva de la Biosfera de Los Petenes, en Campeche, México. La Vegetación Acuática Sumergida (VAS) en la Biosfera de los Petenes está constituida por poblaciones tanto monoespecíficas como mixtas de las especies de pastos marinos Thalassia testudinum, Halodule wrightii y Syringodium filiforme. Aunque las especies de algas clorófitas, feofitas y rodófitas son elementos fundamentales de la VAS, destacan por su cobertura y abundancia las especies de Caulerpa. En mayo y junio del 2010, hubo diferencias significativas de la cantidad de estolones, su diámetro, frondas completas e incompletas y el tamaño de los estolones como el de los ejes erectos. En el 2010 el valor de la tasa finita de crecimiento poblacional (l) fue de 2.38±0.15 con el método de las marcas y con el de la biomasa 1.20±0.13 y en el 2011 los valores fueron de 1.80±0.36 con las marcas y de 1.35±0.15 con la biomasa. Los resultados indican que la población está creciendo, pero es controlada por factores bióticos y abióticos. A pesar de que no se detecta la especie como una amenaza aparente, sugerimos que se continúen estos estudios demográficos sobre C. paspaloides var. wurdemannii e incluso de otras especies del mismo género. No solo para detectar una invasión o un crecimiento explosivo, sino porque la presencia de estas especies no indican condiciones bajas en oxígeno y altas en sulfatos.

Analizamos el crecimiento corporal de una nueva especie de lagartija endémica del género Xenosaurus Peters, ubicada en la Reserva de la Biósfera, Sierra Gorda - Querétaro, México. Se estimaron las tasas de crecimiento corporal y se analizaron a partir de los modelos de crecimiento de Von Bertalanffy, logístico por longitud y logístico por peso. Para describir el patrón de crecimiento de estas lagartijas, utilizamos el modelo logístico por longitud debido a que fue el modelo que tuvo el mejor ajuste a las tasas observadas de crecimiento corporal. No encontramos diferencias significativas entre machos y hembras en el parámetro característico de crecimiento ni en la talla asintótica proyectada. Por lo tanto, se construyó una sola curva de crecimiento para ambos sexos. Los machos alcanzan la madurez sexual a los 24 meses, mientras que las hembras lo hacen hasta los 37 meses. Las tasas de crecimiento independientes de la talla no fueron estadísticamente diferentes entre años (2001, 2002 y 2003), ni entre estaciones (estación húmeda y seca). Nuestros resultados sugieren que la variación en el crecimiento corporal de esta especie, no es causada exclusivamente por las variaciones ambientales, sino más bien por una compleja combinación de factores ambientales y bases genéticas.We analyzed variation in body growth of a new lizard species of the genus Xenosaurus Peters that is endemic to the Biosphere Reserve, Sierra Gorda - Querétaro, México. We calculated body growth rates and analyzed them by means of the Von Bertalanffy, logistic-by-length, and logistic-by-weight growth models. We used the logistic-by-length model to describe the growth pattern of these lizards because this model provided the best fit to the observed body growth rates. No significant differences were found between males and females in the characteristic growth parameter or in the projected asymptotic size. Therefore, a single growth curve was constructed for both sexes. Males reach maturity at 24 months, whereas females at 37 months. Size-independent growth rates were not statistically different among years (2001, 2002 and 2003) or between season (wet and dry season). Our results suggest that variation in body growth of this species is not caused exclusively by environmental variation, but rather by a complex combination of environmental and genetic factors.

La Huerta de Cabra es un referente ineludible de los paisajes y regadíos tradicionales del interior de la España meridional. Situadas en el contacto entre la campiña y la Subbética cordobesa, deben su existencia al importante caudal que brota de la surgencia kárstica (Fuente del Río) que permite el riego del piedemonte (Huertas Altas) y, aguas abajo, de la terraza aluvial del río Cabra (Huertas Bajas). De origen inmemorial aunque tuvieron gran esplendor en época árabe, se consolidaron en el siglo XVI. Desde entonces conformaron un vergel de geométricas explotaciones minifundistas y rico y variado policultivo, que abastecía de frutas y verduras a un amplio entorno, siendo su ameno paisaje glosado en la literatura y en la percepción de propios y extraños. La orientación productivista de los años sesenta del siglo XX las encauzó hacia la transformación e intensificación de las prácticas agrícolas, llegando a alcanzar su zénit de ingresos y rendimientos. Pero pronto acusaron la incapacidad para competir y adaptarse a los nuevos mercados, de ahí que en las últimas décadas hayan entrado en una dinámica que las hacen casi irreconocibles con respecto al pasado cercano. Las Huertas Altas han sido presa de una urbanización poco controlada, y las Huertas Bajas objeto del abandono y cautivas del monocultivo. La pérdida del patrimonio que ello ha supuesto es dolorosa e irreparable, y ambas son hoy un paisaje roto: las Huertas Altas por la pérdida del suelo rústico a favor de la ocupación urbana y las Huertas Bajas por la pérdida de su función de auténticas huertas.

El diagnóstico de los factores que inciden en la organización del trabajo permitió proponer un programa de mejoras, capaz de garantizar la calidad de vida laboral (CVL) de los trabajadores(as) de la carrera de Agroindustria – ESPAM MFL. Se diseñó y aplicó un procedimiento que propició la familiarización con el área, se realizó entrevistas a trabajadores de las unidades de docencia, investigación y vinculación (UDIV) adscritas a la carrera. La evaluación de la organización del trabajo se dio por la implementación de un cuestionario de valoración general y otro de valoración específica para el estudio del régimen de trabajo y descanso, empleando la técnica de estudio de tiempos; además se utilizó la técnica del diagrama bimanual para describir los métodos de trabajo aplicados a los procesos de producción. En los resultados se detectó duplicidad de actividades, fatiga, estrés, y operaciones rutinarias, todas estas fueron priorizadas mediante el método Kendall para someterlas a un análisis causa-efecto, y reconocer las sub-causas que las generan.

El objetivo general de este trabajo fue encontrar un nuevo valor agregado a las hojas de las agaváceas, desecho de la agroindustria. Se estudiaron cuatro especies de agaves de tres estados de la república mexicana: Agave angustifolia (Oacaxa), Agave tequilana (Jalisco), Agave salmiana y Agave lechuguilla (Hidalgo). Luego de una clasificación taxonómica, fenológica, ecológica y etnobotánica (basados en morfología comparada), se sometieron a diversos análisis físicos (humedad, molienda, tamizaje, granulometría y características foliares, MEB) y químicos (cenizas grasas y aceites, proteínas, análisis TGA y DTGA, así como FTIR). Las especies de A. angustifolia y A. tequilana son las que presentan un óptimo tamaño de fibra para la elaboración de papel. Corresponde también a los mayores porcentajes de celulosa (44.3% y 36.8%) por DTGA. Del análisis proximal, se evidencia que las dos especies definidas como mejores para la obtención de pulpa de celulosa, presentan pequeñas diferencias significativas en contenidos de grasas, proteínas, material solubilizable en agua caliente (AT) como en solución moderadamente alcalina y/o alcohólica.

Se analizó la variabilidad espacio-temporal de la dieta de jurel Trachurus murphyi frente a Perú de 1977 a 2011. Un total de 21058 estómagos fueron analizados utilizando métodos bivariados y el Modelo de Árbol de Regresión Multivariado (ARM). Se utilizó como variable respuesta la composición gravimétrica de la dieta, con respecto a diferentes variables predictivas como años, profundidad de la isoterma de 15 °C, Índice de Oscilación del Sur (IOS), Índice de Oscilación Decadal del Pacífico (PDO), anomalía de la temperatura superficial del mar, zona (norte, centro y sur) y distancia de la costa. Nuestros resultados nos permitieron identificar dos escenarios diferentes, uno desde el año 1977 al 2000, donde la dieta del jurel T. murphyi estuvo fuertemente dominada por Euphausiidae, y otro escenario después del 2000, donde el jurel T. murphyi consumió mayor diversidad de presas, principalmente Euphausiidae, camaroncito rojo Pleuroncodes monodon y Zoeas. Se destaca que el primer escenario corresponde a condiciones cálidas y el segundo a condiciones frías, ambas coincidentes con los periodos multidecadales. A diferencia de estudios anteriores que muestran que la anchoveta Engraulis ringenses una presa abundante, en este estudio no fue significativamente importante. Espacialmente, los Euphausiidae dominaron la dieta en el norte-centro de Perú, mientras que al sur, la composición de las presas fue más diversa. La dieta también varió significativamente según la distancia a la costa, con mayor proporción de P. monodoncerca a la costa y con respecto a su etapas de desarrollo ontogenético.

The policies implemented in the country to overcome the consequences of the crisis of 1930 were measures to regulate production and trade, in the case of agricultural activities and industries. The entity created to handle the winemaking was Junta Reguladora de Vinos, which began operations after 1935. At the same time that they put into execution the provisions adopted by this national institution, the provincial authorities in the producing region arbitrated various practices designed to offset the sharper edges of the crisis and to reposition the agricultural industry at local and national market. In the province of Mendoza provincial authorities prescribed, starting in 1936, some regulations aimed at modernizing the state apparatus in an attempt to achieve greater efficiency in the implementation of regulatory policies and making the machinery of government to the demands of the new stage. The creation of a office specifically dedicated to the production of statistics and economic research under the provincial Ministry of Finance was the most important measure in this regard, while other provisions were trying to find in contemporary tourism development of a complementary alternative traditional winesLas políticas implementadas en el país para superar las consecuencias de la crisis de 1930 se manifestaron, en el caso de las actividades agrarias y agroindustriales, en medidas de regulación de la producción y el comercio. La entidad creada para ocuparse de la vitivinicultura fue la Junta Reguladora de Vinos que comenzó a operar a partir de 1935. Al mismo tiempo que se ponían en ejecución las disposiciones emanadas de ese organismo nacional, las autoridades provinciales de la región productora arbitraban diversas prácticas destinadas a paliar las aristas más agudas de la crisis y a reposicionar a la agroindustria en el ámbito local y el mercado nacional. En la provincia de Mendoza las autoridades provinciales instrumentaron, a partir de 1936, algunas normativas destinadas a modernizar el aparato estatal en un intento de lograr mayor eficiencia en la aplicación de las políticas de regulación y de adecuar la maquinaria gubernamental a las exigencias de la nueva etapa. Antecedentes: la malaria, la desnutrición y la inseguridad alimentaria, son problemas de salud pública en Colombia, que deben estudiarse integradamente. Objetivo: describir la relación entre morbimortalidad por malaria con desnutrición proteico-calórica, anemia y deficiencia de vitamina A y de zinc en los niños e inseguridad alimentaria en sus hogares, al igual que el efecto de los suplementos poblacionales de retinol, hierro y zinc sobre morbimortalidad por malaria. Metodología: se consultaron Medline y otras bases biográficas. Resultados: la desnutrición proteico-calórica y las deficiencias de vitamina A y zinc, aumentan la morbimortalidad por malaria. Los estudios sobre los efectos de los suplementos poblacionales de micronutrientes en niños sobre morbimortalidad por malaria por P. falciparum muestran: los de vitamina A, sugieren efecto protector, los de zinc no tienen resultados concluyentes frente a la malaria pero otros beneficios y los de hierro, tienen efecto perjudicial. Los estudios sobre los efectos de tales suplementos sobre la morbimortalidad por malaria por P. vivax son incipientes y en el caso del hierro, parecen estar influenciados por la edad de los niños y si se usan solos o combinados con zinc. La malaria coexiste con la inseguridad alimentaria en el hogar y la prevención de esta última contribuye a reducir la desnutrición infantil y posiblemente la morbimortalidad por malaria. Conclusión: reducir la inseguridad alimentaria disminuirá la desnutrición infantil y las deficiencias de micronutrientes, así contribuirá a reducir la morbi-mortalidad por malaria. En zonas endémicas para P. falciparum, los suplementos poblacionales de vitamina A tienen resultados promisorios: los efectos de los suplementos de zinc no son claros aún y los de hierro son perjudiciales.

Se estableció un experimento de restauración ecológica en un paisaje degradado por ganadería en San Félix (Bello, Antioquia). Se estudiaron estacas y plántulas de Clusia multiflora, Hedyosmum sp., Meriania nobilis, Piper sp., Saurauia sp., Tibouchina lepidota, Tournefortia sp., Weinmannia sp., por disponibilidad e importancia en la zona. Después de 13 semanas la mortalidad de las estacas fue completa y fue del 50 % para las plántulas. Para mejorar la adaptación de las especies e incluir varias nuevas, en una segunda fase del experimento se rescataron plántulas de 1 m de altura y se aclimataron durante tres meses en un vivero. También se aplicaron cristales de Aloe vera a las nuevas estacas para facilitar su enraizamiento. Las plántulas establecidas (95 %) correspondieron a: Billia rosea, Bocconia frutescens, Fuchsia sp., Hedyosmum sp., Inga sp., Myrsine coriacea, Saurauia sp., Schefflera sp. y Siparuna sp. Las estacas supervivientes (33 %) fueron: Brugmansia arborea, Brunellia sp., y Saurauia sp. En general, las plántulas rescatadas mostraron un alto potencial de establecimiento y bien pueden promover procesos de restauración.
