<text>This research was conducted in the settlement “Facão Bom Jardim”, in the city of Cáceres - Mato Grosso , with the group of women “Natureza Viva” which develops activities such as agro-ecological farming, production of chestnut derivatives, crafts and plant sponges. This work emphasizes the visibility of women's work at the settlement and relates the struggle of women who over the years aims their financial, social and political independence. It occurred in four steps. At first, literature searches were made in different libraries, on the issue of gender, social organization and economic solidarity. At second, three models of questionnaires were drawn up and delivered to members of the group 'Natureza Viva', also to the family members and people who are not related to the group, such as residents of neighboring settlements. At the third step, visits were made getting to know the daily living in the community, especially about women in the group. In addition, questionnaires were applied by home visits. At the fourth stage, a dynamic group called 'Web of Life' was performed, so it was possible to get better understanding about the group, as well as the role of each woman within it. It was noticed that the group emerged as a kind of struggle for social space and is composed of women from different parts of the country. Despite the difficulties, these women have achieved significant improvements for the community and for themselves. The group is very important because it contributes to the improvement of women´s self-esteem, for the sharing of experiences, allowing the realization of exchange, dissemination of the activities and also generating an income through the sale of products to CONAB. Therefore, the project developed in the settlement “Facão Bom Jardim” is recognized by its participants and has visibility. This indicates the possibility of women's work involving agro ecological practice being valued and promoting an increase in household income also in other communities.</text>

The main goal of the paper is to evaluate the experience of PRONAF on the farmers of the state of Pernambuco. The data used include information on, approximately, 4.500 farmers from this State. The results are presented for the whole sample, excluding the 'assentados', and by groups (B, C e D). The estimates are corrected for the existence of participation bias through the use propensity score method. The effectiveness of the program is also considered in the analysis. When the differences of characteristics and probabilities of participation are factored in, the main findings point that, although effective, the program has not shown significant impacts on the considered state.</text>

This work had the objective to evaluate the effects of irrigation water salinity (EC) associated to application frequencies of bovine biofertilizer on chemical qualities of yellow passion fruits. The treatments were distributed using 5 x 4 factorial design corresponding the five EC of irrigation plant water of 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1, in four frequencies of application of the biofertilizer: without bovine biofertilizer (SB); with application one week before transplanting (1 SAT); application with intervals of 90 days after transplanting (90 DAT); and, with application one week before transplanting and at intervals of 90 days (1 SAT + 90 DAT). From the results it is verified that the increased salinity of water inhibited the pulp yield, the total soluble solids (TSS), pH, the ratio of total soluble solids and titratable acidity (TSS/AT) and vitamin 'C' in juice, providing increased acidity and electrical conductivity of the juice. The increased frequency of application of the biofertilizer, despite increasing the electrical conductivity of the juice diminished the degenerative effects of salts of irrigation water to plants, resulting in an increase in pulp yield, vitamin 'C' and also reduced the ratio TSS/AT and the pH of the pulp of yellow passion fruit.</text>

The scarcity of energy resources and the high livestock mortality rates are perpetual problems for small farmers of the Brazilian semi-arid region. From September 2006 to April 2007 a continuous reactor, of 33 m³ with gasometer in PVC flexible film, was installed at the EBDA Experimental Station, Jaguarari, Bahia State and the affluent and effluent biochemical, microbiological, and parasitological characteristics were monitored, the biogas production and composition being evaluated, as well as the use of the biofertilizer in elephant grass. With adequate management, the pollution power of residues reduced significantly. Microbiologically, the efficiency of total and fecal coliforms remotion was above 98%, when the main endoparasite eggs were eliminated after treatment. The biogas production was 0.061 m³ kg-1 of manure. The biogas showed in its composition basically 58 and 34% of methane and carbonic dioxide, respectively. The biofertilizer (pH 7.5) was a great source of nutrients, mainly nitrogen (64 g 100L-1, 80% ammoniacal form) and potassium (214 g 100L-1), increasing forage production, without significant changes in the chemical composition, 'in vitro' dry matter digestibility, and mineral content.</text>

<text>The use of new technologies for increased production in the field is configured as a primary issue for the economic viability of rural smallholders in the Amazon region, especially those producing cassava in the state of Acre, one of the main and most important crops produced in the State. In this sense, the objective is through the present study, discuss the use of technologies in cassava production in the state of Acre, to analyze the technical and economic coefficients of cassava production in the state, discussing alternatives to overcome the barriers to a better economic performance of that culture. To this end, we work with the methodology of the research project entitled 'Socioeconomic Analysis of Rural Family Production Systems in Acre' - ASPF, who developed a specific methodology for this type of production, from field surveys conducted in the state concerned. The results indicate that cassava production in Acre suffers from lack suitable for employment in cassava, evidenced by low productivity and high costs of production technologies which can be corrected with appropriate policy to strengthen the sector.</text>

Esto permitió calcular CLi a 24 h (CL10 4,0 x 10-3, CL50 1,5 x 10-2, CL90 5,5 x 10-2 g/100 ml), 48 h (CL10 6,0 x 10-3, CL50 2,0 x 10-2, CL90 7,0 x 10-2 g/100 ml) y 168 h (CL10 3,3 x 10-3, CL50 1,3 x 10-2, CL90 4,9 x 10-2 g/100 ml.

---- Green Capitalism, as presented at the three linked United Nations Conferences on Environment and Development, has been proposed as a means to confront the environmental (ecological) and social (poverty) crises currently being experienced around the world. This “greening” is a new stage of capital accumulation that entails: the use of financial mechanisms, such as debt-for-nature exchanges; the license of environmental ngos to broker the indebted countries’ resources with large corporations, and to establish the monetary values of the ‘global commons’. Meanwhile, the new labourers are peasants and Indigenous women and men who have acquired new roles as service providers in the new industries, such as eco-tourism. This paper considers this stage of capitalism in Costa Rica and the critiques to it.</text>

This research aimed to study the economic performance of the family farming at Santa Tereza settlement, Porangatu, North of Goiás. Data were collected interviewing 45 families, in the 2001/2002 growing season. Factor analysis and a multiple regression model were used to explain the business profitability. The Santa Tereza settlement presents low rainfall, scarce water sources and a small market for their products. Farmers received government investment and operating capital, but did not receive technical assistance or human capital training. Their main activities are dairy, swine, poultry, rice and corn production. The small amount of working capital induces the adoption of labor intensive technology and small production scale (47.9% of the area is cultivated), and, as a consequence, 77.5% of the family labor is not used. This explains the low productivity levels and the high risk of the annual crops, although, all agricultural activities presented positive gross margin amounting to R$ 2,188.00 per year. Dairy was the only activity which presented positive net income. Retirement income represents 65% of the family income. Factor and regression analyses showed that technical efficiency, use of land resources, and family labor are directly related to better economic results, while annual crops and hired labor have negative effect on farm profitability.</p> <p class='western'>KEY-WORDS: Land reform settlement; production and income; factor analysis.</p></text>

<text>Currently, family farming has taken visibility both in academic works and in the design of public policies. Even though are recognized own characteristics which differentiate it from the business production, they are presented according to the type of production and the territory where they are inserted, particularities that allow defining and analyzing them. In the case of family horticultural and flower production, which supplies with fresh products to big urban centers, the specificity of labor-intensive production system, the technologies utilized, the characteristics of the obtained products, their commercialization and their localization, differs substantially from others productive systems of the country. According to diagnosis made by INTA [2004] and other qualitative works in suburbs of Buenos Aires, the difficulties faced by these households are multiples. Among the most important are mentioned the subordination in the commercial chain and the access to financing. This paper seeks account for a territorial development project in the peri-urban region of Gran La Plata, which addresses from an integral perspective, to financing aspects and commercialization to family farmers It focuses on 30 family farmers from La Plata and Berazategui belonging to the project 'Banco Social', implemented by Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestales from UNLP; advancing on an analysis regarding the access to financing and the commercial strategies carried out by the family farmers under studyEn la actualidad, la agricultura familiar ha tomado visibilidad tanto en trabajos académicos como en el diseño de políticas públicas.
