                <text>One of the focus of the project 'Support for the Integration of Territorial Initiatives into Rural Community Projects in the Hydrographic Microbasins of the Sustainable Rural Development Project in Hydrographic Microbasins', financed by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development linked to the World Bank and executed by the State Secretariat of Agriculture of the State of Rio de Janeiro (SEAPEC RJ) within the Rio Rural Program was the search for alternative sources of resources to support family agriculture projects. Of these, one of the hypotheses raised was to seek support through collective financing platforms, popularly known as crowdfunding. This article approaches a recent case study, which sought to raise funds for the drilling of an artesian well in the Ademar Moreira Settlement, located in the municipality of São Pedro da Aldeia (RJ). At the site, the family farmers have legal permission to extract pink pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), spice used in gourmet cooking and high value-added product. It is the extraction of this seasoning that generates most of the income of the small farmers who can’t improve their production due to lack of water, hence the need to drill an artesian well in the place.</text>

Broom craftsmanship from native and cultivated plants dry straw is a long tradition for small farmers families. In Goiás State the producers use the native cerrado palm Syagrus sp., but its availability is rapidly decreasing. In southern Brazil broomcorn brooms are traditional. Experiments carried out in Goiás have demonstrated good agronomic adaptability of broomcorn, making it a possible substitute for Syagrus. This research describes broomcorn farming systems in the states of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), São Paulo (SP) e Goiás (GO). Four cases were studied, in 1997 and 1998, through direct interviews with farmers and updated in 1999. The net margins over operation average cost were 92, 102, 100, and 59%, for RS, SP, GO (broomcorn), and GO (Syagrus), respectively.

KEY-WORDS: Sorghum bicolor; family agriculture; craft; broomcorn; brooms.
</text>

                <text>Muitas das tecnologias desenvolvidas para a cultura do pimentão estão voltadas para a melhoria da produtividade e da aparência dos frutos sem considerar aspectos como sabor, valor nutricional e resíduos tóxicos remanescentes. O presente trabalho teve como objetivos avaliar o efeito de pulverizações semanais com biofertilizante Agrobio (5%), oxicloreto de cobre (2,4 g L-1), sulfato de estreptomicina + oxitetraciclina (0,8 g L-1) e testemunha (água), sobre a produtividade e a qualidade de frutos de três cultivares de pimentão: Magda, Cascadura Itaipu e o híbrido Magali R. Adotou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial (4x3). As variáveis analisadas foram produtividade, características físicas e físico-químicas, teor e acúmulo de fósforo, cobre e chumbo nos frutos. Observou-se maior diâmetro longitudinal e volume dos frutos e maiores produtividade e eficiência no aproveitamento do fósforo pelo híbrido 'Magali R'. Observaram-se diferenças entre as cultivares quanto à taxa de acúmulo de cobre nos frutos, tendo sido quatro vezes maior em frutos de 'Magda' pulverizados com oxicloreto de cobre que nos demais tratamentos e, nenhum efeito dos tratamentos sobre o acúmulo de chumbo. Os teores de cobre e chumbo encontrados, porém, estão dentro da faixa aceitável pela Anvisa. Constatou-se, ainda, que as aplicações de cobre afetam o sabor dos frutos, principalmente por influenciar em sua acidez total titulável, expressa em maiores teores de ácido cítrico e menores valores de pH. Os resultados apontam, ainda, para uma relação entre acúmulo de cobre nos frutos e eficiência do uso de fósforo, sendo, porém, necessários novos estudos para sua comprovação.Most technologies used for bell pepper production emphasize yields, shape and size of the fruits, with less attention to features such as flavor, nutritional value and toxic residue content. The objectives of the present work, accomplished in field and laboratory conditions, were to evaluate the effect of weekly sprayings of Agrobio biofertilizer (5%v.v.), copper oxychloride (2.4 g active ingredient L-1), streptomycin sulphate + oxitetracycline (0.8% active ingredient L-1) and water as control treatment, on the production and quality of fruits of three cultivars of bell peppers: 'Magda', 'Cascadura Itaipu' and 'Magali R'. In both conditions, a randomized complete block design with four replicates was used, in a factorial scheme (4x3). The analyzed variables were productivity, physical and physical-chemical features, percentage and total P, Cu and Pb in fruits. Larger longitudinal diameter and volume as well as higher productivity and efficiency of P use by 'Magali R' were found. There was no effect of the treatments on Pb accumulation but effects were found on Cu. Higher Cu concentrations were found in fruits treated with copper oxychloride, especially in cultivar ' Magda', although concentrations found were within the range acceptable by the national sanitary agency (ANVISA) parameters. Besides, Cu applications afffected fruit flavor, primarily by changing total titrable acidity and lower pH. Results also suggested a relationship of Cu content and P efficiency use by pepper plants, which need further confirmation.</text>

The objective of this research is to analyze the production systems of the Itapuranga family farmers. The methodology used in this case study is based on the agrarian systems theory. The research techniques used for data collection for the field work were documental search, interviews, and observations. At the beginning, the production systems of the family farmers from Itapuranga comprised diversified crops, primarily for family consumption and commercialization of the surplus. Starting from the 1990s, the family farmers began to develop production systems specialized in fruit crops, integrated with other crop systems and with the dairy cattle system. The research concludes that, despite its limitations, the fruit crop developed in Itapuranga offers excellent potential for sustainable family farming.

KEY-WORDS: Family farming; agrarian systems; farming systems; production systems; fruit crops.

   </text>

                <text>Antioxidant effect and polyphenol content of Syringodium filiforme (Cymodoceaceae). The marine phanerogam Syringodium filiforme, known as 'manatee grass', is a common species that grows in coastal areas associated to Thalassia testudinum. With the aim to describe some of its possible chemical characteristics, this study was performed with a sample of 1.2kg, collected in March 2009, in Guanabo beach, Havana, Cuba. The sample was dried (less than 12% humidity) and a total extract prepared; other three extracts were prepared with the use of solvents of increasing polarity. The phytochemical screening and analytical determinations of each fraction were undertaken Total polyphenol content was determined using pyrogallol as reference´s standard; chlorophyll a and b and anthocyanin content were also quantified. Total extract and fractions antioxidant activity were evaluated by using the free radical scavenging activity assay with 1,1- Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl reactive (knowing as DPPH´s method). The phytochemical screening of the different extracts detected the presence of high concentrations of flavonoids, phenols, terpenes, antocyaninns, reducing sugars and alkaloids. The total extract and methanol fraction showed significant free radical scavenging properties, while the petroleum ether fraction showed moderate activity, and the chloroform fraction and the aqueous soluble precipitate (residual salt) obtained didn’t show antioxidant properties against free radicals. The results of this work confirmed the potentialities of this species for biological purposes. Rev. Biol. Trop. 59 (1): 465-472. Epub 2011 March 01.</text>
