<text>Even though natural history information is crucial for answering key ecological, evolutionary, and conservation questions, basic studies are still lacking for Neotropical snakes. This study aims at contributing to the knowledge of the Neotropical tribe Pseudoboini, based on literature data, analysis of museum specimens and unpublished data. The tribe is mainly composed of moderate-sized snakes, although small and large-sized snakes also occur in the clade. Mean fecundity ranged from two (Rodriguesophis iglesiasi) to 29 eggs (Clelia plumbea) and the species are predominantly terrestrial and nocturnal. Most species are diet specialists and lizards are the most commonly consumed prey (found in the diet of 29 species), followed by small mammals (consumed by 20 species) and snakes (consumed by 18 species). Although the tribe Pseudoboini appears to be well studied, for 15 species (32%) only a small amount of information or none was available. We hope that our study can motivate research on the least known species.</text>

<text>Brazil has a high diversity of flies of the genus Drosophila, and part of this richness is represented by the cardini group. We analyzed the fluctuations in the richness and abundance of this group, in environments that had never previously been studied in the northeastern region of Brazil. Among the 28,204 drosophilids sampled, 1,294 belonged to the cardini group and were represented by D. polymorpha, D. cardini, D. neocardini and D. cardinoides. Occurrences of D. neocardini and D. cardinoides were registered for the first time in the Caatinga. In this biome, D. cardini stood out as having the highest abundance, and D. polymorpha was not observed. In the coastal Atlantic Forest, D. cardini was not registered, but D. polymorpha was found in all the localities investigated. Mangrove swamps were the environment with the lowest abundance and richness of the cardini group. The High-altitude Forest presented the highest richness of this group. We suggest that the high abundance of D. polymorpha in the High-altitude Forest and in the coastal Atlantic Forest may be a reflection of the historical relationship between these two environments.</text>

The objective of this work was to improve the immunocapture method for the application to soil samples containing high levels of clay particles and to utilize it for the isolation of Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus strains from soil cultivated with sugarcane and coffee. The immunocapture technique was applied successfully for isolation of bacterium from soil samples. The modified immunocapture technique with Al2(SO4)3 allowed the application of the method using clayed soil samples by the flocculation of the suspended clay. It proved to be effective for isolation of G. diazotrophicus inoculated in sterile sandy and clay soils five days after inoculation. The maximum sensitivity of the method to isolate G. diazotrophicus cells, using pure culture, was 10³ cells mL-1. The modification of the technique allows the capture of Gluconacetobacter spp. from soil samples near the coffee plants but not from sugarcane soils.</text>
