ABSTRACT: Atta sexdens rubropilosa (leaf-cutter ants) has a symbiotic association with a fungus and has a negative interaction with other fungi due to parasitism of the fungus cultivated by ants; also, there are several other fungi with no exact known role occurring in their cultivated fungus garden. In the present study, we use the ITS region (internal transcribed spacer) to identify fungi in colonies treated with toxic baits. Experiments using two toxic baits were carried out: 0.75g of sulfluramid [0.3%] and 0.75g fipronil [0.003%]. Samples of fungi were collected and cultured in Czapek medium for seven days to allow fungal growth and subsequent identification. Total DNA was isolated from 100-150 mg of mycelium using the CTAB method and using PCR, with the universal primers (ITS4 and ITS5), to amplify the ITS region. Sequencing was performed using the Sanger method. Sequences were subjected to BLAST, allowing the identification of nine different species of the orders Agaricales, Eurotiales, Hypocreales, Pleosporales, Saccharomycetales and Tremellales showing a variation in identity of 96-100%. Using “The Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery” analysis, nine groups were identified, corresponding to species described in NCBI. The K2P distances were used to generate a tree using Neighbour-joining, demonstrating that the species were grouped according to phylogenetic groups. We concluded that leaf-cutter ant colonies exhibited a wide variety of fungi and this study suggested that there is no correlation between the species of fungi isolated with the control method used on the ant nest.

A supressão de paisagens naturais tem dizimado populações e/ou reduzido a área de ocorrência de muitas espécies de anuros, caso do Cerrado, dado o grande potencial econômico e velocidade de descaracterização por atividades humanas. Por este motivo, inventários de espécies são extremamente necessários nessas regiões que dependendo do grau de alteração ambiental podem prejudicar as atividades de dispersão e reprodução dos anuros. Este estudo tem por objetivo determinar a riqueza e a diversidade de modos reprodutivos da anurofauna da bacia do Rio Tijuco e comparar a composição da taxocenose dessa região com taxocenoses de anfíbios de outras regiões do bioma Cerrado e da floresta estacional semidecidual anteriormente estudadas. O estudo foi desenvolvido ao longo da bacia do Rio Tijuco numa extensão aproximada de 80 km. Através de quatro métodos de amostragem, foram registradas 40 espécies de anuros pertencentes a seis famílias, o que corresponde a 20% das espécies de anuros registradas para o Cerrado. As condições da paisagem favorecem espécies mais tolerantes e adaptadas ao clima mais seco, o que reflete numa taxocenose que possui baixa proporção de modos reprodutivos e uma elevada representatividade de modos generalizados, dependentes de água ou com adaptações contra dessecação. Em comparação com outras 15 localidades verificou-se que a anurofauna do Cerrado é típica, com baixa similaridade taxonômica com ecossistemas adjacentes. A diversidade de habitats e a expressiva riqueza de espécies tornam a bacia do Rio Tijuco de grande importância para a conservação da anurofauna do bioma Cerrado.

Foram avaliados os níveis de exposição e dos efeitos causados por emissões na atmosfera de mercúrio metálico proveniente de casas compradoras de ouro na população do Município de Poconé, Estado de Mato Grosso. O projeto foi desenvolvido através da comparação da morbidade referida, dos exames clínicos e da análise dos teores de mercúrio na urina de três grupos populacionais. As análises dos teores de mercúrio na urina mostraram diferenças altamente significativas entre os grupos centro e periferia em comparação ao grupo-controle. Entrevistas com as pessoas que apresentavam teores elevados evidenciaram que a exposição no centro da cidade poderia ser proveniente das casas compradoras de ouro e, no caso da periferia, poderia ter ocorrido exposição através da queima de amálgamas no interior das residências. Os dados de morbidade referida apresentaram proporções maiores de queixas entre os moradores do centro em comparação aos outros grupos e também maior número de alterações no exame clínico. Conclui-se que há maiores exposição e efeitos à saúde devido ao mercúrio metálico entre pessoas pertencentes aos primeiros dois grupos.This paper evaluates the levels of exposure to and health effects of metallic mercury emissions into the atmosphere by gold dealers in the town of Poconé, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The project was based on the comparison of referred morbidity, clinical examination, and metallic mercury urinary concentrations in three population groups. The first group consisted of downtown residents who were exposed to metallic mercury emissions. The second group resided on the outskirts of the town and the third in an agricultural area. Urinary concentrations of metallic mercury showed highly significant differences between groups from downtown and the outskirts as compared to the control group. Investigation of individuals with high concentrations showed that exposure in the downtown area might have come from gold dealers' establishments. In the group from the town outskirts, exposure might have been from amalgam-smelting done inside homes. Referred morbidity data showed an increased proportion of complaints and alterations in clinical examinations by downtown residents as compared to the other groups.It was concluded that there was a possibility of exposure and health effects caused by metallic mercury for residents from the first two groups.

Se implementó una propuesta dinámica e innovadora como lo es la elaboración de trabajos prácticos para la enseñanza de la microbiología en primaria con estudiantes de grado cuarto (4º) del colegio Champagnat de Bogotá. Este trabajo pretende establecer las actividades como recursos que propician el aprendizaje significativo acerca de diversidad y ecología microbiana. De igual manera, se realizan con el fin de que los estudiantes reconozcan la importancia y las interacciones de los microorganismos con el ambiente. En este artículo se mostrarán diferentes actividades prácticas como la elaboración de talleres y carreras de observación, las cuales permitieron establecer categorías de análisis respecto a la interpretación que los estudiantes tienen acerca de los microorganismos, generando en ellos habilidades actitudinales, conceptuales y procedimentales, orientándolos al trabajo científico e investigativo.

El aislamiento de Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii, serotipo B, a partir del medio ambiente se estableció inicialmente en Australia en 1989, en asocio con el Eucalyptus camaldulensis y posteriormente con E. tereticornis. Con estos hallazgos se postuló que desde allí, el hongo se ha podido exportar, por medio de las semillas contaminadas, a otras regiones geográficas, incluyendo Colombia. El objetivo de éste estudio fue identificar las levaduras del género Cryptococcus asociadas con especies de Eucalyptus sp., como primera evaluación en la ecología de C. neoformans var. gattii en nuestro país. Se realizó en Santafé de Bogotá, con una población de 100 árboles ubicados al centro, nororiente, oriente y occidente de la ciudad, recolectando de cada uno de ellos flores, frutos, hojas, cortezas y detritos; el procesamiento de las muestras incluyó extracción del material con una solución salina con antibióticos, siembra en medios selectivos e identificación de las especies con base en las características morfológicas, macro y microscópicas y bioquímicas. Se aislaron 27 cepas de Cryptococcus pertenecientes a 9 especies de Cryptococcus, a partir de 21 árboles ubicados en 5 zonas diferentes de la ciudad. Se aisló C. neoformans y se identificó como C. neoformans var. neoformans serotipo A. Estos datos iniciales son importantes como primera evaluación de la asociación de Cryptococcus sp. con los Eucalyptus en nuestro país.Environmental isolation of Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii was first made in Australia in 1989 by ELLIS. He established a specific association with the tree species Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E. tereticornis. Based on his findings, ELLIS proposed that the fungus could be exported from Australia to others regions, including Colombia, by means of infected seeds. The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify Cryptococcus sp., associated with Eucalyptus trees; this is the first ecological evaluation of C. neoformans var. gattii in our country. A total of 100 Eucalyptus trees, distributed among 13 zones, located in the center, northeast, east and west of Santafé de Bogotá, were studied. Flowers, fruits, leaves, barks and Eucalyptus debris were collected. The samples were processed by extraction with saline solution containing antibiotics, cultured in selective media and the isolates were identified by morphological and biochemical characteristics. Twenty-seven isolates of 9 Cryptococcus sp. were recovered from 21 Eucalyptus trees, from 5 zones. One C. neoformans var. neoformans serotype A was recovered. The Cryptococcus associated with Eucalyptus is important because this is the first study done in our country.

Abstract Aim: Here we analyzed some basic ecological attributes (richness and density) of the benthic community in a stretch of a rocky river under the influence of a small dam of a meter in height, forming a small reservoir of run-of-river type. Methods Sediment samples were taken with a Petersen collector at three different periods and in three sites: upstream from the dam (site 1), close to the dam (site 2) and downstream from the dam (site 3). Organisms were separated in large groups and Chironomidae genera. Results The particle size analysis indicated that the sites 1 and 2 are dominated by fine sediments, in contrast to site 3, composed of medium and coarse sediments. A total of 23 taxa of benthic macroinvertebrate groups and 31 genera of Chironomidae were found. Richness and density were different among sampling sites, and for large groups and Chironomidae its attributes increased towards downstream, probably explained by the sediment composition and the originally lotic conditions in site 3, confirmed by all statistical analysis used. In the dam site (2) there was a richness decrease. Non metric multidimensional analysis showed a clear spatial separation of large groups of macroinvertebrates and chironomid genera between sampling sites, indicating that there are typical taxa of each spatial compartment. Canonical correspondence analysis correlated only rubble sediment with the abundance of large groups, and for Chironomidae genera only the granules type was correlationed, with two groups of taxa in the anlysis: one with sites 1 and 2, and other with site 3. Conclusions Even very small dams in rocky rivers as in the present study alter the environmental variables and ecological attributes of benthic macroinvertebrates.

Em colônias de Triatoma sordida, Panstrongylus megistus e Rhodnius neglectus, espontaneamente desenvolvidas em galinheiros experimentais, observou-se as condições de desenvolvimento, bem como a variação e a permanência de seus componentes. A colonização e dispersão de T. sordida é favorecida em ambiente aberto resultante da instalação de pastagens com conseqüente proliferação de árvores isoladas e secas. O desenvolvimento de colônias de P. megistus ocorre em ambiente coberto na íntima proximidade de matas residuais, admitindo-se que os anexos domiciliares lhes sirvam de pontos de atração. O R. neglectus revelou certo grau de domiciliação aliado à capacidade de dispersão que lhe permite atravessar distâncias apreciáveis. O primeiro semestre do ano parece incluir a época infestante das colônias de T. sordida revelada pela maior produção de adultos e ninfas de primeiro estádio. O papel de visitantes observado para algumas ninfas dessa espécie, permite supor do poder de dispersão dessas formas.Spontaneous colonies of Triatoma sordida, Panstrongylus megistus, and Rhodnius neglectus developed in experimental fowlhouses were observed for the conditions for their development and the variation and permanence of their components. T. sordida colonization and dispersal is favored by open areas, mainly pasture lands where many dry trees remain as the result of primitive vegetation destruction. Development of P. megistus occurs near residual forests, and it seems that artificial environment attraction is due mainly to the number of peridomestic dwellings. R. neglectus showed a degree of adaptation to the artificial ecotopes and also great dispersal capacity. More intensive production of adults and first nymphs of T. sordida was observed in the first half-year. This pattern seems to show a period of greater infestation by the bug colonies. The presence of visitor nymphs of T. sordida suggests a dispersal capacity of these forms.

A entrevista com Leda Dau trata de sua trajetória profissional, dedicada à pesquisa e ao ensino em botânica. Ela trabalhou no Museu Nacional entre 1953 e 1994 e é integrante de uma das primeiras gerações de mulheres a sofrerem o impacto das transformações sociais que, a partir da década de 1920, provocaram mudanças no sistema de gênero brasileiro, bem como possibilitaram a crescente escolarização e profissionalização femininas, viabilizando o seu acesso ao então restrito mundo da ciência.This interview with Leda Dau explores her career at the Museu Nacional from 1953 to 1994 and her dedication to research and teaching in the field of botany. She was a member of one of the first generations of women who felt the effects of the social transformations that began in the 1920s. This process brought changes to the gender system in Brazil and improved women's opportunities for schooling and professionalization, thereby allowing them access to the era's restricted world of science.

Analisa também como a abordagem menos fragmentada e menos abstrata de determinados conhecimentos referentes à ecologia pode contribuir para o processo de aprendizagem.This paper discusses the contribution of science classes that deal with parts of the Brazilian Terrestrial Ecosystem's in terms of the relationships between emotional aspects and their role in students' motivation, within an educational context. It also analyzes how a less fragmented approach to some ecology content may contribute positively to the learning process.

O objetivo do trabalho é descrever a colonização da região pelo Aedes aegypti. Levantamento entomológico realizado em 1985 detectou a espécie em São José do Rio Preto. A dispersão do mosquito atingiu, até 1988, os 30 municípios da região. Nos distritos e aglomerados rurais, o primeiro foco do vetor foi encontrado em 1987 em um dos 29 existentes, dispersando-se para os demais até 1991. Os focos foram identificados, principalmente, através de pesquisas larvárias em locais com grande concentração de recipientes, e a maior freqüência de encontro de larvas de Ae. aegypti ocorreu em pneus, principais responsáveis por sua dispersão. Os focos foram identificados, basicamente, entre novembro e abril, períodos de maior incidência de chuvas. As delimitações dos focos mostraram que os principais recipientes infestados pelo mosquito nos domicílios foram os pneus e vasos de plantas. A conseqüência mais importante da presença do Ae. aegypti tem sido as ocorrências de epidemias de dengue.The aim of this study is to describe the colonization by the Aedes aegypti in the region. A survey carried out in 1985 detected the species in São José do Rio Preto. The mosquito has spread and reached the 30 counties of the region till 1988. In the district and rural areas, the first vector focus was found out in 1987 in one of the 29 districts and rural areas, having spread to the others till 1991. The foci have been mainly identified through larval researches in locations with a great concentration of containers, and the greatest occurrence of larvae of Aedes aegypti has been in tires, the most frequent means of spread. The foci have been mainly identified between November and April, periods of greater incidence of rains. The delimits of foci showed that the containers which were mostly infested by the mosquito in homes have been tires and vases of plants. The most important consequence of the presence of Aedes aegypti has been the occurrence of dengue epidemics.
