Mercer Description An account of the resource Abstract Background Landrace farmers are the keepers of crops locally adapted to the environments where they are cultivated. Patterns of diversity across the genome can provide signals of past evolution in the face of abiotic and biotic change. Understanding this rich genetic resource is imperative especially since diversity can provide agricultural security as climate continues to shift. Results Here we employ RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to understand the role that conditions that vary across a landscape may have played in shaping genetic diversity in the maize landraces of Chiapas, Mexico. We collected landraces from three distinct elevational zones and planted them in a midland common garden. Early season leaf tissue was collected for RNA-seq and we performed weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). We then used association analysis between landrace co-expression module expression values and environmental parameters of landrace origin to elucidate genes and gene networks potentially shaped by environmental factors along our study gradient. Elevation of landrace origin affected the transcriptome profiles. Two co-expression modules were highly correlated with temperature parameters of landrace origin and queries into their ‘hub’ genes suggested that temperature may have led to differentiation among landraces in hormone biosynthesis/signaling and abiotic and biotic stress responses. We identified several ‘hub’ transcription factors and kinases as candidates for the regulation of these responses. Conclusions These findings indicate that natural selection may influence the transcriptomes of crop landraces along an elevational gradient in a major diversity center, and provide a foundation for exploring the genetic basis of local adaptation. While we cannot rule out the role of neutral evolutionary forces in the patterns we have identified, combining whole transcriptome sequencing technologies, established bioinformatics techniques, and common garden experimentation can powerfully elucidate structure of adaptive diversity across a varied landscape. Ultimately, gaining such understanding can facilitate the conservation and strategic utilization of crop genetic diversity in a time of climate change. Abstract This article puts in tension the dispute between two antagonistic models of agricultural production in the contemporary agriculture, as well as tradition and relationship with nature: agribusiness and agroecology. We highlight the Argentine and Brazilian cases of soybean production in recent decades, intensified by the “soy boom”, that is, soybean agribusiness. We understand this production as a paradigmatic case, for evidencing the depth of agribusiness and its social, economic and environmental consequences. In opposition to this, we emphasize agroecology as environmentally sustainable, socially and economically harmonious paradigm. Thus, it goes beyond a model of agricultural production, in the construction of good conditions for the reproduction of life in agriculture and in the city. The article is divided into three sections. In the first, we address the fundamentals of forming the pattern of agricultural production that leads to agribusiness. In the second we focus on the promotion of the agribusiness in Argentina and Brazil. Acorazonada) before two alternatives of organic fertilization. The soil of the site is hydrated Ferralitic Red; rainfall oscillated between 1 000 and 1 145 mm per year. In the establishment cutting highly significant variations were obtained among the treatments: control without fertilization, association mulberry-Albizia lebbeck as green manure vs mulberry fertilized with organic matter (41,6; 45,0 and 72,4 g of edible dry biomass per individual, respectively). Nevertheless, in the rainy season of the second year of exploitation, the cumulative production did not show significant variations between the association and the fertilized mulberry (88,8 and 86,7 g edible dry biomass per individual), although it did with regards to the control which produced only 40,7 g. The contribution of organic matter to the soil during the establishment of the mulberry plantations and/or the association of A. lebbeck managed as green manure provide a significant advantage in the productive response of the forage shrub, and the second alternative stood out for its endogenous character. El medio ambiente junto con la predisposición genética influyen en el desarrollo y severidad de estas enfermedades. Objetivo: Evaluar las exposiciones ambientales en pacientes con 4 EAI. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio exploratorio en 188 mujeres con 4 EAI: artritis reumatoide (AR) n= 51, lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) n= 70, esclerosis sistémica (ES) n= 35 y síndrome de Sjögren (SS) n= 32. Los datos fueron recolectados mediante un cuestionario que evaluó características demográficas, clínicas, y exposición a factores ambientales. Además, se midieron 14 autoanticuerpos. Los datos se analizaron mediante correlación de Spearman y la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis. Resultados: Las características generales de los pacientes se muestran en la Tabla 1. El consumo de café previo al inicio de la enfermedad se correlacionó positivamente con la edad de inicio de la enfermedad en las 4 EAI (Figura 1), adicionalmente se asoció con bajos niveles de factor reumatoide (FR) en pacientes con AR y ES. La exposición a metales pesados se asoció con títulos más elevados de anti-CCP3 y FR, mientras que la exposición a tintes de cabello pareció influir en la positividad para FR y β2glicoproteína-1-IgM en AR y LES, respectivamente (Figura 2). Conclusiones: Estos resultados apoyan el rol de las exposiciones ambientales sobre las EAI, en la edad de inicio y en la producción de autoanticuerpos. Al mismo tiempo, la inmensa mayoría de sus residentes permanentes perciben este crecimiento como una amenaza a su proyecto de construcción colectiva de una comunidad “virtuosa” argumentada en torno de valores como la “ecología”, lo “natural” y la “calidad de vida”. Nuestro texto busca mostrar algunas de las formas en que los residentes permanentes plantean y responden las preguntas acerca de qué es, qué debe ser y qué no Mar de las Pampas – así como los repertorios morales a los que los mismos recurren - en el marco de una narrativa moral que opone un proyecto “virtuoso” y “auténtico” de “comunidad” a los intereses “espurios” de una “especulación inmobiliaria” y un “progreso desenfrenado” que buscarían corromper el proyecto de estos “vecinos”, así como la manera en la cual estas disputas contribuyen a la consolidación de una identidad colectiva compartida para sus pobladores.   Palabras Clave: identidad colectiva; moralidades; construcción de comunidad; ecologismo; localidades turísticas.   Abstract Mar de las Pampas, a seaside resort on the Atlantic Seaboard of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) has undergone in the last decade a process of massive expansion of its touristic infrastructure (especially on lodging and commercial facilities). At the same time, most of its full-time residents consider this process as a threat looming over their own project of collective construction of a virtuous community, grounded in values such as “ecology”, “natural life” and “quality of life”. Our text will attempt to show some of the ways in which the permanent residents of Mar de las Pampas pose and answer their questions about what Mar de las Pampas is, what should it be and what should it strive not to be, as well as the moral repertoires on which they are grounded, in the context of a moral narrative that opposes a “virtuous” and “authentic” community to the spurious interests of “voracious realtors” engaged in “acts of speculation” that seek to corrupt the former.
