<text>Over and above food, agricultural landscapes provide citizens with crucial public-good ecosystem services, such as biodiversity conservation, cultural values, recreational opportunities, and food security. Because continuing agricultural intensification undermines the ability of landscapes to provide public goods, policies have been implemented to preserve landscape multifunctionality, but with limited success. We suggest that one reason for this lack of success is that the cascading nature of ecosystem services has not been sufficiently addressed. While different definitions of multifunctionality emphasize different parts of the service cascades, we argue that efficient policies targeting multifunctionality simultaneously need to consider ecosystem services along the entire cascade, i.e., both intermediate and final ones. By understanding how multiple final ecosystem services are promoted by single measures with effects on multiple intermediate ecosystem services or by single intermediate ecosystem services with effects on multiple final ecosystem services, measures can be identified that simultaneously benefit private and public goods, allowing the latter to hitchhike on management for the former. Even if such synergistic solutions are less efficient in terms of promoting yields compared to non-synergistic solutions, policies such as payment for ecosystem services to promote them may be cost-efficient since the private benefit reduces the need for public payment. Furthermore, by focusing on the ecosystem service cascade, social-ecological scale-mismatches along the cascade hampering the implementation of synergistic solutions can be identified and targeted by policy. We exemplify our reasoning with the potential benefit to biodiversity conservation from yield-enhancing ecosystem services.</text>

That which defines an ecological system is the set of rules and characteristics which condition its relationships, and its duration in time is guaranteed by its efficiency and internal organization which applied to the city is translated in the reduction of the use of natural resources and in the increase of social organization. To increase the efficiency of the urban systems is the necessary condition for the formulation of ecological city planning favouring the maximum liveability of sites. Liveability is directly correlated to the optimization of numerous elements (public space, equipment, services, building techniques, innovative technology, social cohesion, biodiversity). To carry out such objectives, ecological city planning proposes a new model of town planning on three levels (subsoil, ground level, and upper level).</text>

As contemporary subjects, we suffer the impact of such environmental problems, but not necessarily do we take actions in order to minimize this environment impact. This text aims to problematize the relation between the environment issues and the area of health, reviewing conceptual bases that may make it possible for health and nursing professionals to reflect about the topic and their role in the process of environmental preservation, especially in an attempt to highlight the legacy left by Florence Nightingale. It is necessary a resumption of the legacy of Florence Nightingale in a way to qualify the environmental dimension as indispensable for the process of health assistance, not only in terms of the promotion of health and quality of life, but also to promote the minimization of the environmental impact that comes with the work in the health area. Ethical reflection and educative approach are fundamental points in this process.</text>

We review the main advances that the study of beta diversity has had for over 50 years, since its proposal and until the latest reviews. The increase in the number of publications is remarkable, especially in the last decade, and in these papers many authors discuss and propose methods for analysis, research approaches, as well as basic concepts and related biological phenomena. Bacteriological load of the fishes Cynoscion squamipinnis and Lutjanus gutattus in the marketing chain, Costa Rica. To determine the bacteriological quality of fishery products in the different stages from commercialization, monthly samples were taken during March 2004 and February 2006 from a Costa Rica marketing chain. Microbiological analyses were made to determine total coliforms (CT), faecal coliforms (CF), Escherichia coli (EC), aerobic total count (RTA), Salmonella sp., Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Three body zones were analyzed: skin, belly and muscle. There were differences in the amount of CT between parts: skin had the highest counts, 11% of samples were identified as E. coli. and 2.5% of total counts were higher than the legal limit. Only 1.3% of the samples were S. aureus-positive. Salmonella sp., V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus were absent. Rev. Biol. Trop. 57 (1-2): 45-52. Epub 2009 June 30.</text>
