Em uma área urbana do município do Rio de Janeiro, foram criados 10.988 dípteros caliptratos, pertencentes a quatro famílias e 22 espécies. As criações foram efetuadas em quatro etapas durante os anos de 1986 a 1987. Foram utilizados como substratos: peixe, fígado, carcaça de camundongo, fezes humanas e caninas, camarão, siri, banana, manga mamaão e tomate. As espécies criadas com maior freqüência foram: Fania sp (subgrupo pusio), Atherigona orientalis, Phaenicia eximia, Paraphrissopoda chrisostoma, Chrisomyia megacephala, Ophyra solitaria, Musca domestica, Synthesiomyia nudiseta, Phaenicia cuprina, Ophyra aenescens, Sarcophagula occidua, Morellia flavicornis, e Sarcodexia innota.In an urban area of Municipality of rio de Janeiro were bred 10,988 calliptrate flies belonging to 4 families and 22 species. Breeding was effectuated in four steps during the years of 1986 and 1987. It were used as larvae substrate; fish, liver, mouse carcas, human and dog faeces, shrimp, crab, banana, mango, papaya and tomato. The species bred with frequency were: Fannia sp 9sub grouppusio), Atherigona orientalis, Phaenicia eximia, Paraphrissopoda chrysostoma, Chrysomyia megacephala, Ophyra solitaria, Musca domestica, Sarcophagula occidua, Morellia flavicornis e Sarcodexia innota.

The Enteral Nutrition Therapy (ENT) has been widely used in hospital and home care assistance. However, research works are needed to make this technique more efficient and cheaper. Objective: Evaluate the nutritional quality of handmade enteral diets used in a charity hospital in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Brazil, and propose qualitative and quantitative adjustments, when necessary, and compare the data available in tables of chemical composition of foods with the data achieved by laboratory analyses. Materials and methods: The study was carried out in partnership with a charity organization of the region and the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, where the collection of the handmade enteral diets was performed. The analyses of the physical-chemical and centesimal composition of 36 samples of diets were carried out in the laboratories of the university. Results: It was observed that the daily energy offer of the diets was below the recommended standards and presented a percentage distribution different from that estimated for patients receiving ENT. Besides, it can be seen that the nutrient values of the data achieved in laboratory do not agree with those available in tables of food chemical composition. Conclusions: Significant losses of nutrients were verified during the processing and preparation of handmade enteral diets. It challenges nutritionists to standardize these diets and corroborates the relevance of new studies to determine the nutritional content of handmade enteral diets, since these diets have been widely used in poor regions of Brazil and in other countries.La terapia de nutrición enteral (TNE) se ha utilizado ampliamente en la asistencia hospitalaria y domiciliaria. Sin embargo, se necesitan trabajos de investigación para hacer que esta técnica sea más eficiente y barata. Objetivo: Evaluar la calidad nutricional de dietas enterales elaboradas de forma casera en un hospital de caridad del valle de Jequitinhonha, Brasil, y proponer ajustes cualitativos y cuantitativos, cuando sean necesarios, y comparar los datos disponibles en las tablas de la composición química de los alimentos con los datos obtenidos en los análisis de laboratorio. Materiales y métodos: El estudio se realizó en colaboración con la organización de caridad de la región y la Universidad Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, donde se realizó la recogida de las ditas enterales caseras. Los análisis de la composición fisicoquímica y centesimal de las 36 muestras de las dietas se realizaron en los laboratorios de la universidad. Resultados: Se observó que la oferta energética diaria de las dietas estaba por debajo de las recomendaciones estándar y presentaba un porcentaje de distribución diferente de la estimada para pacientes que reciben TNE. Además, se pudo ver que los valores nutricionales de los datos obtenidos en el laboratorio no concordaban con los disponibles en las tablas de composición química de los alimentos. Conclusiones: Se comprobó una pérdida significativa de nutrientes durante el procesamiento y preparación de las dietas enterales realizadas caseramente. Supone un reto para los nutricionistas para estandarizar estas dietas y corroborar la relevancia de nuevos estudios para determinar el contenido nutricional de las dietas enterales de realización casera, puesto que estas dietas se han empleado ampliamente en regiones pobres de Brasil y otros países.

Algunos ven en la belleza de las aves la presencia diáfana de seres mágicos y alados que están más allá del alcance de nuestras manos, pero en realidad la belleza es mucho más terrenal y compleja. En algunos casos las aves se adornan para seducir, pero no tanto como para que un predador las cace; en otros, se visten muy diferente a las demás aves, porque en la naturaleza lo distinto es bello; algunas descrestan con sus talentos en el combate, y muchas lo hacen para encontrar su pareja de vida. Mencionar la belleza de las aves parecería algo tan evidente y simple, que cualquier atributo que se describa quedaría corto ante el recuerdo del lector; sin embargo, esa belleza, independientemente de la subjetividad del observador, tiene un costo y depende de una trama de relaciones y factores que la convierten en una asombrosa característica de estudio. En otras palabras, cualquier ave, indiferente de si nos parece bella o no, tiene que lidiar en forma cotidiana con interacciones de competencia, mutualismo, parasitismo o depredación con el fin de lograr su supervivencia, pero a la vez tiene que encontrar las mejores estrategias para reproducirse con éxito y asegurar su descendencia. En la región andina central de Colombia, la belleza resulta aún más difícil de analizar debido a que es una región muy heterogénea, con una variación altitudinal amplia, una topografía desigual, condiciones climáticas y edafológicas diversas, diferentes formaciones vegetales (bosque andino, bosque de niebla, páramos, nieves perpetuas) y zonas productivas (cafetales, guaduales, ganadería, cultivos de papa, frutales, minería, etc.). Toda esta heterogeneidad produce una gran riqueza de especies, solo Caldas acoge el cuarenta y ocho por ciento de las aves que se encuentran en el país. Esta riqueza se representa además en la importancia que tienen las aves gracias a sus múltiples interacciones, su efecto en el ecosistema y sus diferentes estrategias evolutivas.

Desde 1990, la ecología de la lapa roja (Ara macao) en el Pacífico Central de Costa Rica ha sido estudiada. Un análisis preliminar de los conteos entre 1990-1994 demostró una población decreciendo rápidamente, en riesgo de desaparecer en varias décadas. Con sentido de alarma, esta información fue compartida con 16 actores locales y científicos en un taller sobre conservación de la lapa roja en Punta Leona. Se acordaron acciones de manejo inmediatas para rescatar la población en peligro y se creó, asimismo, una asociación local (LAPPA) para coordinar los esfuerzos. A partir de 1995, se comenzaron a aplicar acciones de manejo in situ, que involucraron el hábitat, la población de lapa roja y las comunidades humanas. Como resultado, se registró un aumento significativo de dicha población y ampliación de su rango. Esto posiblemente se debió a a) la protección del hábitat y de los pichones en sus nidos; b) la educación ambiental sobre la lapa roja en escuelas rurales y pueblos; c) LAPPA coordinando muchos proyectos de manejo; d) la siembra de árboles utilizados por la lapa roja; e) construcción y colocación de nidos artificiales, y f) Punta Leona como padrino del proyecto desde 1994. Esta investigación aplicada y manejo in situ de lapa roja ha demostrado cómo recuperar una población en vías de extinción. Sin embargo, retos futuros que deben ser abordados incluyen: a) el cambio climático; b) necesidades de investigación, manejo y monitoreo con una población de lapa roja en expansión, y c) el impacto de las reintroducciones de lapa roja (manejo ex situ).

El desarrollo de variedades adaptadas es una de las estrategias que contribuye a garantizar la seguridad alimentaria en zonas productoras de frijol con estrés por sequía. En los invernaderos de cristal del Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), Palmira, Colombia, se evaluaron las características morfológicas y fisiológicas de raíces de 21 líneas de frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) en condiciones de estrés por sequía e irrigación, utilizando un sistema de tubos plásticos desarrollado por el CIAT. Las características evaluadas fueron profundización visual, longitud total de raíces y distribución de raíces a través del perfil del suelo. En campo, utilizando los mismos genotipos de frijol, se evaluaron características relacionadas con la eficiencia de uso de agua mediante la técnica de discriminación de isótopo de carbono y producción de grano. Los resultados en invernadero mostraron que la profundización visual y longitud de raíces entre 60 y 75 cm tienen una correlación significativa (r = 0.56 y 0.50 respectivamente, P < 0.001) con la biomasa aérea de la planta en condiciones de estrés por sequía. En campo, la discriminación del isótopo de carbono en grano se correlacionó (r = 0.32, P < 0.01) con la producción de grano en condiciones igualmente de estrés por sequía. Las líneas de frijol NCB 226, SER 16, SEN 56 y SEA 15 presentaron una mayor longitud de raíces bajo estrés por sequía (28, 24, 29 y 27 m/planta respectivamente) en comparación con las demás líneas evaluadas, lo que les permite mayor transpiración y movilización de fotoasimilados, que favorecen una alta producción de granos. Se estima que la profundización visual, la longitud de raíces entre 60 y 75 cm y la discriminación de isótopo de carbono en grano, son características valiosas como criterios de selección en mejoramiento por tolerancia a estrés por sequía en frijol común.

En este artículo se muestra el funcionamiento y la dinámica de las organizaciones étnico-territoriales, como son los consejos comunitarios, en contextos de modernización y desarrollo, como es la carretera Las Ánimas-Nuquí en el departamento del Chocó. Esta carretera ha impuesto una nueva dinámica y ha generado impactos en la vida local, como la amenaza a la seguridad alimentaria, grupos armados, cultivos ilícitos, prostitución y dependencia económica de las poblaciones a la carretera, que afectan también el funcionamiento de las organizaciones locales de comunidades negras que habitan los territorios del trazado vial. Se presenta unas reflexiones acerca de la difícil situación de los consejos comunitarios en la carretera, sus debilidades, fortalezas, amenazas y estrategias organizativas, así como prácticas de apropiación, reelaboración y/o resistencia de las organizaciones locales como respuesta a la carretera.

The coastal fox or Sechura’s fox, whose scientific name is Lycalopex sechurae, is distributed among the areas of Ecuador’s northwest and the central coast of Peru. There is still little information about the biology of coastal fox and its role in ecosystems that are part of its habitat. Today the coastal fox habitat is under a state of fragmentation by human intervention. In this research, synthesized information about biological, ecological and geographical distribution of coastal fox is presented; with the status of threat and persecution, so conservation strategies are required, and this research focused on propose ecological corridors. The Corridor Designer, an extension of ArcGIS tools, could standardize the resolution of natural, anthropogenic, trophic and protective variables, and with those variables an habitat suitability between the ACP Chaparrí and the ACR Huacrupe La Calera was obtained, which are connected from the design of two different ecological corridors, concluding that both are functional, although the first result of corridor would become more efficient and potential to put into the practice and reality.

La crisis alimenticia es apreciada como un problema productivo y distributivo, aun cuando no hay carencia ni una sobredemanda de alimentos que determine su escasez. La crisis es el sobreprecio de los alimentos, es la especulación con una mercancía vital para la vida y la salud de las personas y los pueblos. El incremento de las ganancias por la vía de la comercialización es una decisión de quienes centralizan la producción y la comercialización de dichos bienes, ante Estados que han desregulado y liberalizado las actividades mercantiles y renunciando a la atención de las necesidades, problemáticas y aspiraciones ciudadanas. La especulación con los alimentos es la apropiación del bienestar, porque agudiza la pobreza y amenaza con la desnutrición y el hambre de las poblaciones, pero también pone en evidencia la crisis de valorización del capital que impulsa formas de apropiación previas al capitalismo para la obtención de utilidades. La maximización de la explotación al trabajo, el despojo de los precarios recursos de los consumidores y de la apropiación de las tierras, son manifestaciones que recuerdan formas coloniales de dominio. La actual crisis no es alimentaria ni financiera, es una crisis del sistema imperante que busca reconformarse ante sus contradicciones e inoperancia del mercado. Sin embargo, el horizonte ideológico y cognoscitivo predominante, impide apreciar el bienestar social como una alternativa para la salida de la crisis.

En el transcurso de un programa de investigación realizado el 9 de junio de 2007, se recogieron tres ejemplares de la especie Laubieriopsis brevis (Hartman, 1965); primera ocasión en que se tiene constancia de este poliqueto para la fauna de la península Ibérica. Los ejemplares fueron recogidos en un fondo fangoso del margen superior del talud continental de Gipuzkoa a 475 m de profundidad. Con este registro, la familia Fauveliopsidae queda representada en la península Ibérica por los dos géneros que la componen: Fauveliosis McIntosh, 1922 y Laubieriopsis Petersen, 2000. En el presente artículo se describen aspectos relativos a su morfologia, ecología, hábitat y distribución geográfica.
