                <text>O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar características qualitativas de laranjas 'Valência' (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.) produzidas em dois pomares experimentais: um cultivado sob sistema orgânico e outro sob sistema convencional. Os pomares foram instalados no município de Montenegro - RS, em julho de 2001, em espaçamento de 2,5 m x 5,0 m, cada um possuindo uma área de 0,25 ha. A qualidade dos frutos foi determinada de 2005 a 2010 a partir de cinco amostras por tratamento em cada ano. Amostras de frutos colhidos aleatoriamente de cinco plantas foram analisadas para massa média dos frutos (MMF), o teor de suco (Ts), o teor de sólidos solúveis totais (SST), a acidez total titulável (ATT) e a relação SST/ATT. No ano de 2010, também foram determinados o teor de ácido ascórbico (vitamina C) no suco e a coloração da casca. No sistema de produção convencional, o manejo é realizado através da utilização de adubos minerais, calcário dolomítico, herbicidas, fungicidas e inseticidas. Já no sistema orgânico de produção, foi aplicado composto orgânico, biofertilizante líquido, caldas bordalesa e sulfocálcica, e a cobertura do solo foi mantida com vegetação espontânea, que recebeu, no inverno, aveia e ervilhaca e, no verão, feijão-miúdo. Não foram identificadas diferenças nas características qualitativas entre os frutos de ambos os pomares, exceto para o teor de SST, que foi maior, em média, nos frutos do pomar convencional. Os frutos do sistema convencional também apresentaram maior teor de vitamina C e coloração da casca mais intensa na comparação dos frutos provenientes do sistema orgânico.</text>

                <text>An experiment was carried out in Magé, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, to evaluate the performance of taro (Colocasia esculenta) intercropped with sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea), used as green manure. A randomized blocks design with four replicates was used and the soil of the field plots was classified as Haplic Gleysol. Treatments consisted of taro (1) intercropped with unpruned sunn hemp, (2) intercropped with sunn hemp cut at soil level, (3) intercropped with sunn hemp pruned at its mid-height, and (4) in monoculture. The taro was planted in double rows spaced by 1.0 m. The planting furrows had a space of 0.5 m, with rhizomes placed at every 3.0 m. The experimental plot consisted of four 3.0 m rows and the useful area corresponded to the five central plants in each of the two central rows. The sunn hemp was sown in parallel lines in the spaces between the taro double rows, 120 days after planting the taro. When the sunn hemp was cut at soil level, an accumulation of 211 kg ha-1 of N was observed. Besides this, the sunn hemp's biomass promoted the cycling of an average 17 kg ha-1 of P, 85 kg ha-1 of K, 151 kg ha-1 of Ca, and 27 kg ha-1 of Mg. Worth mentioning, it represented also a deposition of 6.85 Mg ha-1 of dry substance. Even when pruned at its mid-height, the sunn hemp still provided 60% of nutrients relatively to the treatment in which it was cut at soil level. In addition to the nutrient supply, the use of taro intercropped with sunn hemp cut at soil level or pruned at mid-height represented efficient alternatives for controlling the spontaneous vegetation and for reducing taro leaf burning by solar radiation, without compromising the yield of taro. In all intercropping systems, taro plants had a larger leaf area and were taller than plants in monoculture.O experimento foi desenvolvido no município de Magé, Região Metropolitana do estado do Rio de Janeiro, para avaliar a influência do manejo da crotalária (Crotalaria juncea), usada como adubo verde, na forma de consórcio, sobre o desempenho do taro. O solo da área experimental foi classificado como Gleissolo Háplico. O delineamento experimental foi blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de cultivo do taro (1) consorciado com crotalária sem cortes, (2) consorciado com crotalária roçada rente ao nível do solo, (3) consorciado com crotalária cortada à metade de sua altura e (4) em monocultivo. O taro foi plantado em fileiras duplas espaçadas de 1,0 m. Os sulcos de plantio tiveram espaçamento de 0,5 m, com os rizomas colocados a cada 3,0 m. A parcela experimental consistiu de quatro linhas de 3,0 m, adotando como área útil as cinco plantas centrais em cada uma das linhas do meio. A crotalária foi semeada em linhas paralelas, no espaço entre os sulcos, 120 dias após o plantio do taro. Quando a crotalaria foi cortada rente ao solo, houve um acúmulo de 211 kg ha-1 de N, além da reciclagem de, em média, 17 kg ha-1 de P, 85 kg ha-1 de K, 151 kg ha-1 de Ca e 27 kg ha-1 de Mg. Observou-se ainda a deposição de 6,85 Mg ha-1 de matéria seca. Mesmo quando cortada a meia altura, a crotalária ainda forneceu 60% de nutrientes em relação ao tratamento em que foi cortada rente ao solo. Além do fornecimento de nutrientes, a utilização do taro consorciado com crotalária, quando esta foi roçada ao nível do solo ou cortada à metade de sua altura, foi eficaz para controle da vegetação espontânea e para redução da incidência de queimaduras foliares causadas pela radiação solar, sem comprometer o rendimento do taro. Independente do manejo da crotalária, as plantas de taro apresentaram maior área foliar e foram mais altas quando cultivadas em consórcio do que em monocultivo.</text>

                <text>Acid lime can be used as fresh fruit or as juice to increase the flavor of drinks. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze organic acid lime nutritional composition in order to evaluate if there are important differences among those conventionally produced. No significant differences in total titrable acidity, pH, ascorbic acid, sucrose, calcium, and zinc were found between the acid lime juice from organic biodynamic crops and conventional crops. However, the organic biodynamic fruits presented higher peel percentage than the conventional ones leading to lower juice yield. On the other hand, fructose, glucose, total soluble solids contents, potassium, manganese, iron, and copper were higher in the conventional samples. These results indicated few nutritional differences between organic and conventional acid lime juices in some constituents. Nevertheless, fruit juice from biodynamic crops could be a good choice since it is free from pesticides and other agents that cause problems to human health maintaining the levels similar to those of important nutritional compounds.</text>

                <text>Abstract Background Coffee silverskin, a by-product from coffee roasting industries, was evaluated as a feedstock for biobutanol production by acetone–butanol–ethanol fermentation. This lignocellulosic biomass contained approximately 30% total carbohydrates and 30% lignin. Coffee silverskin was subjected to autohydrolysis at 170 °C during 20 min, with a biomass-to-solvent ratio of 20%, and a subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis with commercial enzymes in order to release simple sugars. The fermentability of the hydrolysate was assessed with four solventogenic strains from the genus Clostridium. In addition, fermentation conditions were optimised via response surface methodology to improve butanol concentration in the final broth. Results The coffee silverskin hydrolysate contained 34.39 ± 2.61 g/L total sugars, which represents a sugar recovery of 34 ± 3%. It was verified that this hydrolysate was fermentable without the need of any detoxification method and that C. beijerinckii CECT 508 was the most efficient strain for butanol production, attaining final values of 4.14 ± 0.21 g/L acetone, 7.02 ± 0.27 g/L butanol and 0.25 ± 0.01 g/L ethanol, consuming 76.5 ± 0.8% sugars and reaching a butanol yield of 0.269 ± 0.008 gB/gS under optimal conditions. Conclusions Coffee silverskin could be an adequate feedstock for butanol production in biorefineries. When working with complex matrices like lignocellulosic biomass, it is essential to select an adequate bacterial strain and to optimize its fermentation conditions (such as pH, temperature or CaCO3 concentration).</text>

Avaliou-se o desempenho de lisímetro de pesagem hidráulica de baixo custo, visando à determinação direta da evapotranspiração de referência (ETo), em área de assentamento rural no Semi-Árido nordestino. O lisímetro é de concepção simplificada, com travesseiros hidráulicos confeccionados com mangueira flexível de butil e revestida em náilon, interligados a um sistema manométrico com mercúrio e água. O equilíbrio do lisímetro foi estável, sendo o maior erro médio posicional de 3,93%. As calibrações geraram coeficientes de correlação superiores a 0,9993 e resoluções de leituras entre 0,095 e 0,134 mm. As leituras lisimétricas foram comparadas com estimativas da ETo obtidas, utilizando-se dos métodos de Penman-Monteith, Blaney-Criddle-FAO, Jensen-Haise e do Tanque Classe A-FAO. Adicionalmente, avaliou-se o desempenho de um tanque evaporimétrico simplificado, construído a partir de material reciclado, o qual vem sendo utilizado no manejo da irrigação em áreas de agricultura familiar. Todos os métodos analisados apresentaram bom desempenho, com medidas bem correlacionadas aàs do lisímetro, para o período estudado.Direct evapotranspiration measurements are important to the calibration of indirect methods. The performance of a low cost hydraulic weighing lysimeter was evaluated, aiming to estimate the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) in a settlement area in the Semi Arid Brazilian northeast. The lysimeter presents a simplified design, with loading cells of butyl internally covered with nylon, connected to a manometric system with mercury and water. The lysimeter equilibrium was stable, with the largest positional average error of 3.93%. Calibrations produced correlation coefficients higher than 0.9993, and reading resolutions between 0.095 and 0.134 mm. Lysimeter readings were compared to ETo estimate Penman-Monteith, Blaney-Criddle FAO, Jensen-Haise, and Class A methods. Additionally, the performance of a simplified evaporimetric tank was evaluated, built with recycled material, which has been used for irrigation management in communal areas.                 <text>Mudas de mamoeiro da cultivar Baixinho de Santa Amália foram transplantadas para covas de 40x60x40 cm, em áreas de três estruturas contíguas: (a) estufa sombreada (cobertura de plástico), (b) estufa sombreada + sombrite (cobertura adicional de sombrite com 30% de sombreamento sobre o plástico) e (c) telado (cobertura exclusiva de sombrite 30%). Ao lado de tais estruturas foi implantada uma área de cultivo de mamoeiro em ambiente natural. Os tratos culturais aplicados foram os condizentes às normas técnicas vigentes na agricultura orgânica. As irrigações foram procedidas com mangueira plástica, evitando-se molhar folhas e frutos. Aos 45 dias pós-transplantio e, subseqüentemente, a intervalos mensais, as plantas foram inspecionadas em relação à incidência de lesões foliares causada pelo fungo Asperisporium caricae. Para efeito de análise estatística, após o teste de homogeneidade das variâncias, foram consideradas quatro repetições por ambiente (tratamento), com seis plantas úteis por parcela. O modelo de quantificação da doença indicou efeito altamente significativo dos ambientes protegidos, estufa e estufa sombreada, quanto à incidência de sintomas, em comparação com ambientes de telado e em área natural de cultivo. Durante os 12 meses de avaliações foi constatada alta correlação entre incidência da doença e pluviosidade e umidade relativa do ar. As estruturas cobertas com plástico demonstraram alto potencial de controle de A. caricae, sendo, portanto, recomendáveis no sistema orgânico de produção do mamoeiro.Transplants of Baixinho de Santa Amália papaya cultivar were grown in three neighboring plant growth facilities: a) greenhouse (covered with plastic sheet); b) shaded greenhouse (with sombrite 30% black screen over the plastic sheet); c) screenhouse (covered with sombrite 30% only). Next to such structures a plot was settled for cultivation under natural environment. Cultural practices were conducted according to technical regulations for organic production. Irrigations were proceeded with plastic hose avoiding to wet leaves and fruits. From the 45th day after transplanting and subsequently at monthly intervals the plants were monitored in relation to incidence of leaf lesions caused by the fungus Asperisporium caricae. For statistical analysis, after homogeneity of variance test, four repetition were considered within each ambient (= treatment), with six individuals for sampling. The model used for disease quantification indicated a highly significant effect of protected environments greenhouse and shaded greenhouse relating the reduction of leaf lesion numbers compared to screenhouse and natural cropping condition. Disease levels maintained a close correlation with rainfall and air relative humidity during the 12 months of evaluations. The plastic-covered structures showed high potential for controlling A. caricae on papaya leaves and may be recommended for papaya production in the organic system.</text>

                <text>Swine manure agricultural use is a common practice in Brazil. Their physic-chemical characteristics favor its use as biofertilizer, but the presence of pathogens may become a risk to human health. This research presents a qualitative study of the main alternatives of pig manure disinfection, analyzing efficiency, advantages and limitations of each procedure. The disinfection studies reported in literature are based on the following treatments: alkaline, thermal, biological, chemical, and physical. The greater efficiencies are in thermal treatment (&gt; 4 log: 60 °C), chemical treatment (3 to 4 log: 30mg Cl- L-1; 3 to 4 log: 40 mg O3 L-1) and physical treatment (3 a 4 log: 220 mJ UV radiation cm-2). The biological treatment (anaerobiosis) also promotes the pathogen reduction of swine manure, however with lower efficiency (1 to 2 log). The selection of the treatment should consider: implementation and operation cost, necessity of preliminary treatment, efficiency obtained and destination of the treated manure (agricultural use, water reuse). Brazilian regulation does not have specific guidelines for the microbiological quality of animal production effluents that is very important to be considered due to confined animal feeding operation transformation in the last years in the country.O uso agrícola de dejetos suínos é uma prática comum no Brasil. Suas características físico-químicas favorecem seu aproveitamento como biofertilizante, porém a presença de patógenos pode representar um risco à saúde humana. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo qualitativo das principais alternativas de desinfecção de dejetos suínos, analisando eficiência, vantagens e limitações de cada procedimento. Os estudos de desinfecção reportados na literatura são baseados nos seguintes tratamentos: alcalino, térmico, biológico, químico e físico. As maiores eficiências de redução de patógenos estão no tratamento térmico (&gt;4 log: 60 °C), tratamento químico (3 a 4 log: 30 mg Cl- L-1; 3 a 4 log: 40 mg O3 L-1) e tratamento físico (3 a 4 log: 220 mJ radiação UV cm-2).                 <text>Nas últimas décadas, assistimos à revitalização do debate em torno da agricultura familiar pela incorporação das discussões sobre as múltiplas funções da agricultura num rural que não pode mais ser visto como domínio exclusivo da atividade agrícola e dos agricultores. No contexto brasileiro, acreditamos que essa discussão deva ser permeada pela análise de como processos diferenciados de distribuição fundiária e desenvolvimento econômico e o tipo de agricultura resultante geram ruralidades específicas com características como, no caso da agricultura familiar, a manutenção de práticas sociais e de trabalho marcadas pelas relações de parentesco e vizinhança presentes numa sociedade de interconhecimento. Partindo desse princípio, este trabalho analisa a agricultura familiar de um bairro rural do município de Ouro Fino - MG, sua herança histórica e sua participação na criação de uma paisagem natural e humana que muito contribui para a atratividade da região.The last decades witnessed the revitalization of the debate around family farming with the addition of discussions regarding the multiple functions of agriculture, given the fact that rural areas are longer devoted exclusively to agricultural activities. In the Brazilian context, we believed that this debate must be permeated by analyses of how differentiated processes of land distribution and economic development, and the resulting types of agriculture, generate specific ruralities with characteristics such as, in the case of family farming, the maintenance of social and work practices marked by the relations among relatives and neighbours. It is in this light that this research analyses family agriculture in a rural area of Ouro Fino-MG, its historical heritage, and its participation in the creation of a physical and human landscape that greatly contributes to the attractiveness of the region.</text>

                <text>Avaliou-se a viabilidade da exploração do morangueiro, no Paraná, em duas áreas, 0,3 ha (área média cultivada pela agricultura familiar) e 1 ha, por um ano. Elaborou-se uma planilha de fluxo de caixa a partir da qual se calcularam: Período de Recuperação do Capital (PRC), Retorno sobre Investimento (RI), Valor Presente Líquido (VPL) e Taxa Interna de Retorno (TIR). Todos para Custo Operacional Efetivo (COE), Custo Operacional Total (COT) e Custo Total de Produção (CTP). Para uma situação considerada normal, os indicadores de rentabilidade calculados foram (Tipo de custo: VPL área-padrão (TIR área- padrão) / VPL área efetiva (TIR área efetiva)) COE: US$ 17.856,55 (42%) / US$ 4.795,85 (39%); COT: US$ 5.182,40 (11%) / - US$ 1.691,97 (-13%); CPT: US$ 4.846,26 (10%) / -US$ 1.792,80 (-14%). Fez-se a análise de cenários para os fatores produtividade, preço de venda e mão de obra, analisando o VPL e a TIR. Verificou-se que o tamanho da área influenciou na viabilidade econômica, mostrando a importância de se determinar anualmente a área mínima viável para a agricultura familiar. Os resultados indicaram que a cultura é viável em curto prazo, quando considerado o COE como parâmetro de análise, mas pode não se sustentar em prazos maiores quando se consideram o COT, o CTP e a variação de alguns fatores de produção. Pela análise de cenários definidos pelos fatores de produção analisados, o VPL e a TIR alteram-se para níveis que oferecem risco à exploração.</text>

                <text>Uno de los objetivos de la agricultura de precisión, es el riego de acuerdo con las necesidades particulares de cada porción del suelo de cultivo. En este trabajo, se describe el diseño e implementación de una red de sensores inalámbricos que es capaz de obtener mediciones de humedad del suelo de diferentes zonas de un cultivo de fresas y, según los datos recogidos, determina el tiempo de riego y la zona particular que se debe regar utilizando el método de goteo. Los requerimientos de agua para los cultivos se estimaron teniendo en cuenta la capacidad de campo y el umbral de riego; ambas fueron encontradas para cada zona del cultivo en periodo de producción. La comunicación entre los nodos de la red se basa en la pila de protocolos ZigBee, y el prototipo final es un sistema de control de riego de encendido/apagado en lazo cerrado, que incluye una banda de histéresis. Los resultados de la implementación de la red y el sistema de control muestran un incremento en la eficiencia del uso de agua, además de una mejora en la calidad de los frutos con respecto al método de riego tradicional.</text>
