<text>Agricultural production systems have to combine management practices in order to sustain soil's profitability and quality. Organic farming is gaining worldwide acceptance and has been expanding at an annual rate of 20% in the last decade, accounting for over 24 million hectares worldwide. Organic practices avoid applications of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, rely on organic inputs and recycling for nutrient supply, and emphasize cropping system design and biological processes for pest management, as defined by organic farming regulation in the world. In comparison with conventional farming, organic farming has potential benefits in improving food quality and safety. Plant production in organic farming mainly depends on nutrient release as a function of mineralization processes in soils. The build-up of a large and active soil microbial biomass is important pool of accessible nutrients, therefore, is an important priority in organic farming. In organic farming, there is positive effect of quantity and quality of inputs of organic residues on soil microbial biomass. In this way, the organic systems are extremely important for the increase of the soil fertility and the maintenance of the environmental sustainability.

This paper aims to analyze how family farmers behave facing significant changes in the institutional environment of milk production chain. In this sense, we investigated main consequences and impacts on the social and productive organization of milk producing families as a result of the Institution Normative 51 by Ministry of Agriculture in the western region of Santa Catarina state. We used the approach of New Institutional Economics (NIE) and field research with strategic actors involved in the dairy production in the region. We concluded that the IN51 decisively influences the form of organization and participation of family farming in the milk production chain.</text>

The inputs used in crop production represent an energetic cost. Depending on the inputs and on the achieved yields, the conversion of the harvest into energy will determine the energetic efficiency of the system. Organic agriculture will fully meet the goal of environmental conservation only if its energetic sustainability is accomplished. The objectives of this study were to characterize the energetic balance of organic vegetable production and to analyze its energetic sustainability, compared to conventional vegetable crop production systems. Field data were collected from ten vegetable crop fields, from 1991 to 2000 in Domingos Martins, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. Data from the conventional system were obtained in the region. The technical coefficients of the systems were quantified and converted to an energy equivalent (kcal). The general average of the organic system was an input of 4,571,159 kcal ha-1 and an output of 12,696,712 kcal ha-1 at harvest, presenting an energetic balance of 2.78. This balance was similar to the conventional system (1,93). The components of the energetic inputs in the organic system were packaging (35,8%), organic compost (17,2%), irrigation (12,6%), seeds/seedlings (12,4%) and labor (11,0%), machinery (5,0%) and transport (4,5%). If package costs were removed, the energetic inputs on the organic system would be reduced to 2,930,113 kcal ha-1, greatly improving its energetic efficiency. Most of the crops could be considered sustainable regarding energy conversion, presenting balances higher than 1.00. The daily average energy yield in the organic system was 80,421 kcal ha-1 day-1 and was considered sustainable, higher than the minimum estimated calories need (58.064 kcal ha-1).</text>

No-tillage systems were evaluated within an eggplant (Solanum melongena) organic management in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro State. Crotalaria juncea and Pennisetum glaucum cv. BRS 1501 were used as pre-plantings besides fallowing, in comparison to conventional system (plowing). Simultaneously, three cropping managements were tested: eggplant single-cropping, intercropping with C. juncea, and intercropping with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata cv. Mauá). No differences were found among planting systems concerning eggplant yield. Crotalaria juncea was more effective than Pennisetum glaucum and fallow for soil mulch. Intercropping with leguminous species did not decrease eggplant yield. In a second study no-tillage (on C. juncea and spontaneous weeds mulchs) and conventional plowing were compared. These treatments were combined with increasing levels of poultry manure (0, 100, 200, and 400 kg ha-1 of N). In terms of biomass input, C. juncea was again superior to spontaneous weeds. Eggplant responded to organic fertilization with maximum productivity (50.6 t ha-1) corresponding to the highest manure level applied, compared to 36.9 t ha-1 for control plots.</text>

ABSTRACTTo test the effect of human urine on the yield of maize variety 'Matuba', conducted at the Institute of Agrarian of City Mocuba an essay using the randomized complete block design with three treatments (no fertilization T0, T1 fertilization with human urine and T2 chemical fertilization), and three replications in clay soil The data were interpreted by an analysis of variance package Statistix 10.0, the means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. The variables evaluated were: plant height (PH), ear diameter (DM), ear length (CS) ear weight g (PE) and yield (t/ha). Respect of the treatments tested, the application of human urine resulted in significantly higher parameters for plant height (PH) and diameter of the ear (DM), and no significant difference regarding the treatment with chemical fertilizer (T2) parameters ear length (CS), ear weight (PE) and ear (R), which reached in the case of human urine 4.80 t/ha. From the experimental point of view this study showed promising results on the use of human urine fertilization of corn (Zea mays L.) , indicating a potential application of human urine in agriculture in order to reduce consumption or even in some cases replace use of chemical fertilizers.</text>

The objective of this work was to chemically evaluate the solid liquid phases of swine biofertilizer separated by different flocculants. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five kinds of flocculants and five doses of each flocculant, with five repetitions. The separation was conducted through flocculation/decantation for an hour after the addition of each flocculent. The chemical characterization was done on the solid and liquid biofertilizer phases from the determination of the following elements: N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn. For the liquid phase, the purpose of decreasing macronutrients was achieved using the doses of 10 and 20 mL of the combination between the flocculants dolomitic limestone + calcium hydroxide, and micronutrients reduction occurred when the flocculants aluminum sulfate and calcium hydroxide + aluminum sulfate were used.</text>
