                <text>Las primeras indagaciones en la estructura y composición de la ictiofauna en los ríos de Cuba la realizó el naturalista cubano Felipe Poey. Numerosas han sido las investigaciones realizadas en este campo, principalmente en la región occidental y central de Cuba. Este trabajo se propuso determinar la distribución y similitud de los grupos de especies ícticas dulceacuícolas de las diferentes localidades del municipio Gibara. Se determinó el número de especies por cada localidad, se calculó la similitud a través del índice de Bray-Curtis y el rango de distancia de disimilitud entre las localidades mediante el escalado multidimensional no métrico, el cual permite construir un mapa de ordenamiento del número específico de dimensiones. Se registraron 30 especies, de ellas dos marinas y dos nuevos morfos, que probablemente constituyan especies nuevas. Se agruparon en nueve órdenes, 14 familias y 25 géneros. Las localidades con mayor número de especies fueron las que presentaron una amplia red fluvial tales como, Uñas con 22, Floro Pérez 20, Velasco Uno 19, Cañada de Melones 18, Bocas 17 y Velasco Dos 16. El 30% de las especies son endémicas, con un mayor número en las localidades Velasco Uno, Uña, y Velasco Dos. Las especies exóticas estuvieron presentes en un 18.75%, distribuidas en mayor cantidad en Uñas y Cañada de Melones con seis especies cada una. Las especies autóctonas representaron el 50% del total especies ubicadas principalmente en Floro Pérez, Uña y Velasco Uno. Los resultados del estudio de asociaciones mostraron dos grandes grupos a un 46% de similitud y se obtuvo un nivel de estrés de 0.01 lo que demuestra un buen ajuste del orden espacial y proporción de la distancia ecológica.</text>

                <text>I studied activity patterns, microhabitat use and thermal ecology of a small-wild population of the Loma’s lizard, Microlophus tigris in Parque Las Leyendas Zoo, from April to October of 2006. Microlophus tigris individuals were active in a variety of microhabitats, from bushes and vegetation debris to prehispanic bricks (adobes) and litter, during the hottest hour of the day. Mean body temperature (29,4 ºC) was similar to body temperature observed in a natural population from Lomas de Lachay, although in Parque de Las Leyendas, substrate temperature was higher than air temperature, probably related to thermal properties of materials used as microhabitats and to seasonal differences. We encouraged the Zoo to takes conservation measures to protect this endangered wild population of lizard in Lima city.</text>

                <text>The snowy plover is a shorebird endemic to the Americas. It consists of three subspecies. In South America the subspecies occidentalis is found along the coast of the Pacific ocean. Although breeding behaviour,population demography and reproductive success are well established in North America, little is known about these ecological parameters for occidentalis snowy plovers. In October 2008 we studied breeding ecology of snowy plovers in the National Reserve Paracas, Ica, Peru. Snowy plovers were found at all nine sandy beaches and coastal wetlands visited. Based on counts we estimate the population in Paracas to consist of a minimum of 500 snowy plovers. Evidence for breeding activity was found at six of nine sites. Most breeding activity was observed at Playón/Mendieta, surrounding a temporal salt lagoon. Two nests and ten families were found in the entire reserve. In total 24 chicks, eight males and seven females were captured and marked. Families were tended by both parents. Twenty-one of the chicks had perished by the end of the study. During the intense study period none of the marked chicks reached the fledgling age of 25 days and only one chick was confirmed to have fledged during a subsequent visit. Our observations highlight threads during the snowy plover reproduc- tive period that need to be addressed through conservation management and we suggest direct actions to counter the threads identified.</text>

                <text>Con el objetivo de estudiar la ecología de la flebotomofauna en la población de La Rinconada, perteneciente al estado de Lara, Venezuela, zona endémica donde se han descrito casos de leshmaniasis visceral americana (LVA), se realizó un estudio longitudinal durante cinco meses, en los que una noche por mes se capturó flebótomos en los alrededores de una casa en la que previamente se había informado de un caso de LVA. Se encontró una diversidad de seis especies, de las cuales solo dos eran antropofílicas, siendo Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis la más abundante (90%). El pico de abundancia se observó en julio, mes seco que precede a los meses más lluviosos del año. Aunque en nuestra muestra no encontramos evidencia de que los flebótomos estuvieran infectados por Leishmania; la evidencia presentada es importante para el mejor entendimiento de un vector que participa de la transmisión de la LVA.In order to study the ecology of phlebotominae in the population of La Rinconada, in the state of Lara, Venezuela, endemic zone of Leishmaniasis, where cases of American Visceral Leshmaniasis (AVL) have been described, a longitudinal study was conducted during five months, and the presence of phlebotominae was identified one night per month in the surrounding areas of a home where an AVL case had been reported. Six species were found, of which only two were anthropophilic. The most abundant species was Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis (90%), the abundance peak was observed in July - a dry month preceding the rainiest months of the year. Although in our sample we have not found any evidence that phlebotominae were infected by Leishmania; evidence presented is important for a better understanding of a vector that participates in AVL transmission.</text>

                <text>Se analiza y describe la distribución de Magnolia dealbata Zucc. en el estado de Nuevo León, México, aportando información acerca de la ecología, estado de conservación, situación del hábitat y fenología de las poblaciones estudiadas. Por medio de una revisión bibliográfica y trabajo de campo realizado en la sierra Madre Oriental, se obtuvieron datos que permiten distinguir 2 núcleos poblacionales ubicados en el municipio de Montemorelos, en el centro del estado, con extensión total de 17.66 hectáreas, y densidad de hasta 30 individuos por 100 m2. Se presenta en asociación con Pinus teocote, Quercus spp., Cornus florida, Carya sp. y Sambucus nigra. La observación fenológica durante el periodo de estudio mostró que la aparición de nuevos brotes foliares comienza a principios de marzo y la floración a principios de mayo. El hábitat se observa con pocas alteraciones y no se identificaron amenazas a corto plazo para estas poblaciones.The distribution of Magnolia dealbata Zucc. in the state of Nuevo León in northeastern Mexico is analyzed and described; information regarding its conservation status, habitat health, and phenology of studied populations is provided. Through bibliographical information and field work in the Sierra Madre Oriental, 2 core populations of M. dealbata Zucc. can be distinguished, both located in the municipality of Montemorelos in the center of the state, covering a total of 17.66 hectares. Density reaches 30 individuals per 100 square meters. The species grows in association with Pinus teocote, Quercus spp, Cornus florida, Carya sp. and Sambucus nigra. New leaves sprout in early March, and flower production starts in early May. Habitat shows little disturbance and no short-term threats were identified for these populations.</text>

A medida que se sube la vegetación es cada vez más escasa y el paisaje nos hace pensar en un planeta muerto; es por esto que la Nasa comenzó a ver el parque como un entorno perfecto para entender qué pasó en Marte hace millones de años.  No obstante, el parque no está muerto, está increíblemente vivo; es cierto que después de los 3.800 metros sobre el nivel del mar la vegetación y la fauna son menos visibles, pero incluso a los 6.000 metros se puede ver al cóndor de los Andes planear sobre las corrientes gélidas.  En el área del parque es posible observar, si se tiene paciencia, más de sesenta especies de aves que habitan en un ambiente regido por un volcán activo desde hace dos mil años. Los colibríes chivito (Oxypogon guerinii) y piquicorto (Ramphomicron microrhynchum) son comunes incluso después de los 3.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar.</text>

To describe three relevant aspects of household food insecurity (FI) in Mexico: its magnitude, its distribution by social and nutritional vulnerability characteristics; its evolution between 2012 and 2016 and the effect of food assistance programs on FI in Mexican households. Mate­rials and methods. Data on 9 019 households were drawn from the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut 2016 for its Spanish initials) and were compared with data from the 2012 Ensanut. An analysis of differences in differences was made to measure the effect of food assis­tance programs on the evolution of FI. Results. As many as 69.5% of households were classified as FI. Families located in rural areas (78.0%) and residing in southern Mexico (76.3%). Households with support from a food assistance program experienced a decrease in moderate and severe FI between 2012 and 2016. Conclusion. Findings can be used to design and target public policies seeking to improve food security governance in Mexico.</text>

                <text>Para resolver los problemas derivados del cambio medioambiental global, los científicos y tomadores de decisiones reconocen que es necesario integrar más ampliamente el componente social o factor humano en la investigación ecológica. Proponemos que para lograr esta integración las redes de Sitios de Estudios Socio-Ecológicos a Largo Plazo (SESELP) ofrecen una plataforma ideal, porque los sitios permiten abordar singularidades ecológicas, culturales y políticas a escala local, a la vez que integrar escalas globales a través del trabajo colaborativo en redes de sitios. Sin embargo, este trabajo socioecológico todavía requiere articular de mejor manera los programas desarrollados a múltiples escalas geográficas, ecológicas y políticas. Además, hasta el momento el componente social considerado en los programas SESELP ha sido fundamentalmente económico, dejando fuera la dimensión ética. La integración de la ética de manera sistemática en los programas SESELP está severamente limitada por la carencia de metodologías. Para contribuir a resolver esta limitación, hemos desarrollado una aproximación metodológica que denominamos “filosofía ambiental de campo”. Esta aproximación integra las ciencias ecológicas y la ética ambiental en educación y conservación biocultural a largo-plazo a través de un ciclo de cuatro pasos interrelacionados: i) investigación interdisciplinaria ecológica y filosófica, ii) composición de metáforas y comunicación a través de relatos simples, iii) diseño de experiencias de campo guiadas con un sentido ecológico y ético, y iv) habilitación de áreas de conservación in situ. Este ciclo se ha definido a posteriori analizando las experiencias efectivas del programa de investigación, educación y conservación biocultural del Parque Etnobotánico Omora, en la Reserva de Biosfera Cabo de Hornos (RBCH). El programa de Magíster en Ciencias con mención en Conservación Subantártica de la Universidad de Magallanes (UMAG) está adoptando este ciclo como una metodología estructurada para el diseño de tesis y mallas curriculares de estudiantes que están generando innovadoras actividades educativas y de ecoturismo, como el “Ecoturismo con Lupa” y el “Birding Ético”. Para articular programas de trabajo múltiples escalas, el Parque Omora funciona a escala local como un centro de investigación en la RBCH, a nivel nacional como cofundador y sitio más austral de la red chilena SESELP coordinada por el Instituto de Ecología y Biodiversidad (IEB), y a nivel internacional como una reserva y estación de campo del Programa de Conservación Biocultural Subantártica, coordinado por la UMAG, IEB y la Universidad de North Texas (UNT). Esta organización en unidades anidadas ha permitido articular de manera sinérgica el trabajo a escalas locales, nacionales e internacionales. La investigación colaborativa ha: 1) conducido al descubrimiento de singularidades de la diversidad biológica y cultural en la remota ecorregión subantártica de Magallanes, 2)ha posibilitado programas de educación y conservación trabajando con múltiples actores sociales e instituciones, y 3) incorporado la filosofía ambiental en la investigación socioecológica. De esta manera, el programa del Parque Omora contribuye a ampliar la definición del componente social (“S”) en las redes SESELP, y a generar metodologías para integrar, a múltiples escalas, dimensiones ecológicas y éticas en programas de investigación socioecológica, como también de educación y conservación biocultural, que podrían ser implementadas y evaluadas en otros sitios o redes SESELP.In order to effectively address the problems derived from global environmental change, environmental scientists, citizens and decision-makers now recognize the need to integrate more fully the human or social component into ecological research. We propose that to achieve this integration, Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research (LTSER) networks offer an ideal platform, because such sites enable research at ecological, cultural, and political local scales, and at the same time allow addressing these issues at a global scale. However, this socio-ecological work still requires better articulation of programs developed at multiple geographic, ecological and political scales. In addition, until now the social component considered in LTSER programs has focused on economic factors, omitting ethical dimensions. A central reason for this omission is the lack of methodologies to systematically integrate ethics into LTSER programs. As a contribution to resolve this limitation, here we develop a methodological approach that we call “field environmental philosophy.” It integrates ecological research and environmental ethics into biocultural education and conservation through an interrelated four-step cycle: i) interdisciplinary ecological and philosophical research, ii) composition of metaphors, and communication through simple narratives, iii) design of guided field experiences with an ecological and ethical orientation, and iv) implementation of in situ conservation areas. This cycle has been defined a posteriori, by analyzing successful experiences of biocultural research, education and conservation program at the Omora Ethnobotanical Park (OEP) in the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve (CHBR). The Masters of Science in Subantarctic Conservation at the University of Magallanes (UMAG) adopted this cycle as a structured methodology to design theses and academic curricula for students who are creating innovative educational and ecotourism activities, such as “Ecotourism with a Hand Lens” and “Ethical Birding.” To articulate the programs at multiples scales, the OEP functions at the local scale as a research center in the CHBR, at the national level as a cofounder and southernmost site of the Chilean LTSER network coordinated by the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB), Chile, and at the international level as a reserve and field station of the Subantarctic Biocultural Conservation Program that is coordinated by UMAG, IEB and the University of North Texas (UNT). This organization of nested units has permitted to synergistically articulate the work at local, national and international scales. Collaborative research has led to the discovery of biological and cultural diversity singularities in the remote Magellanic subantarctic ecoregion, enabled education and conservation work with multiple social actors and institutions, and has strengthened the incorporation of environmental philosophy into socio-ecological research. In this way, OEP’s program is contributing to broaden the definition of the social (“S”) component in LTSER, and to generate methodologies to integrate, at multiple scales, ecological and ethical dimensions into socio-ecological research, as well as biocultural education and conservation programs, which could be implemented and assessed at other LTER sites.</text>
