La Patagonia chilena está experimentando un aumento del uso del suelo y océano costero y el acelerado derretimiento de algunos glaciares, por lo que uno de los escenarios a futuro es que los fiordos adyacentes reciban cantidades variables de agua dulce y nutrientes inorgánicos. Se estudió la respuesta de ensambles de fitoplancton de los fiordos Reloncaví en invierno y Comau en primavera, a la adición de nitrato y ácido silícico en experimentos de microcosmos. Los ensambles fitoplanctónicos estudiados respondieron a la adición de nutrientes con incrementos en la abundancia celular biomasa autotrófica (clorofila-a) y cambios en la composición específica, destacando el cambio de dominancia de especies de diatomeas pennadas a céntricas formadoras de cadenas. Estos resultados dan indicios acerca de los factores que afectan a las comunidades microalgales en un escenario de cambio climático e intervención antrópica de los fiordos de la Patagonia Norte.

En la Provincia de Tucumán se han identificado (4) cuatro cuencas sedimentarias de edad cuaternaria, con una superficie del orden de los 10.000 Km2, sobre una superficie total del territorio provincial de 22.500 Km2. Es en estas áreas donde se desarrolla la totalidad del sistema productivo de la provincia; de allí la necesidad fundamental de conocer sus características geológicas en superficie y su desarrollo en el subsuelo. La construcción de todos los centros poblados de la Provincia y sus principales obras de infraestructura están asentados en sedimentos cuaternarios, salvo algunos caminos de montañas o diques. La formación de suelos aptos para agricultura y la explotación ganadera, la explotación de áridos para la construcción, el desarrollo de los cauces superficiales de agua y las importantes reservas de agua subterránea, están condicionadas por las características sedimentarias de las rocas de edad cuaternarias que cubren casi el 50% de la superficie provincial. El Cuaternario marca un cambio fundamental en la geografía de la Provincia, con el levantamiento de los sistemas montañosos iniciados a fines del Terciario y los cambios climáticos asociados, permitieron delinear la fisonomía actual del territorio provincial. En el trabajo se analiza la geología de las cuencas sedimentarias cuaternarias, su extensión areal y el importante desarrollo en profundidad donde se encuentran los reservorios de agua subterráneas de la Provincia, a través del análisis de perforaciones profundas y prospección geofísica.

Las sequías son uno de los fenómenos naturales más complejos y pueden generar efectos devastadores para los sistemas sociales y ecológicos. Como consecuencia del cambio climático (CC); de la creciente presión de la demanda de agua causada por el crecimiento de la población; y la expansión de los sectores agrícola, energético e industrial, las sequías se han intensificado; por tanto, es necesario identificarlas y caracterizarlas. En este trabajo se calculó el índice de sequía de caudales (SDI) para cuatro estaciones ubicadas en el río Cauca en su valle alto, con el fin de detectar la ocurrencia e intensidad de las sequías hidrológicas. Los resultados mostraron que los eventos más intensos y de mayor magnitud ocurrieron en los años 1991-1992 y 2015-2016, durante los cuales se presentó el fenómeno El Niño en Colombia.

La determinación del contenido de Monóxido de Carbono (CO) y Metano (CH4) en la baja troposfera tiene gran importancia en los estudios de cambio climático y polución del aire. Por este motivo este trabajo se enfocó en el diseño, construcción y calibración de un instrumento que permita medir la concentración de CO y CH4, además de la temperatura y presión en aire ambiental. El dispositivo diseñado, cuenta con un circuito de acople para los sensores de CO, CH4, Temperatura y presión, un microcontrolador, un display LCD, un reloj y una Micro SD el cual permite el almacenaje y transmisión de datos a través de un convertidor RS-232 a USB. Los resultados indican que la señal de los detectores de CO y CH4 genera una respuesta de tipo exponencial proporcional con la concentración en el rango de0 a 120 ppm, sin embargo, se estableció que la respuesta fue de tipo lineal para concentraciones bajas en el rango 0 a 15 ppm. La respuesta de los gases evaluados difiere para cada uno de los sensores, siendo el CH4 el que mostró la mejor sensibilidad en el rango de0 a 2 ppm.

In this work, we report the economic impact of exposure to high ozone concentrations on four important crops in the area of influence of the Mexico City Megalopolis. Estimated yield losses were as follows: maize: 3%; oats: 26%; beans: 14%; sorghum: 15%. The information needed to estimate the impact of air pollution in Mexico is decidedly deficient. Regarding ozone, the coverage provided by the monitoring networks is strongly focused on urban monitoring and its consistency over time is highly irregular. Apart from the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) and less than a handful of other cities, the quality of the data is poor. Ozone in rural areas can be estimated with air quality models. However, these models depend on a high-resolution emissions inventory, which has only been done through validation processes in the MCMA. With these limitations, we set out to estimate the economic impact of exposure to ozone in these crops with a varying degree of sensitivity to ozone in the city belt of Central Mexico. To this end, we developed a procedure that makes optimal use of the sparse information available for construction of AOT40 (accumulated exposure over the threshold of 40 ppb) exceedance maps for the 2011 growing season. We believe that, due to the way in which we dealt with the sparse information and the uncertainty regarding the available data, our findings lie on the safe side of having little knowledge such that they may be useful to decision-makers. We believe that this procedure can be extended to the rest of the country, and that it may be useful to developing countries with similar monitoring and modeling capacities. In addition, these impacts are not evenly distributed in the region and sometimes they were greater in municipalities that have a higher index of poverty. Air pollution arriving from urban areas increases the social inequalities to which these already vulnerable populations are exposed.

La conservación de espacios naturales con abundante masa vegetal, es vital para la preservación de la biodiversidad en la ciudad, así como la arborización , que aporta mejoras a la calidad de vida. El artículo presenta los resultados del proyecto “Forestación y Rescate de la Laguna Nuevo Amanecer. Ciudad Madero, México”, financiado por la Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, 2015. El objetivo es validar el método de estudio a partir de indicadores en los proyectos de forestación urbana en la ciudad tropical a través de la medición de su impacto. Método . 1. Se utilizaron indicador es del Plan de Indicadores de Sostenibilidad Urbana (Rueda, 2010) para valorar la situación actual del humedal Laguna Nuevo Amanecer. 2. Se elaboró propuesta de reforestación urbana a partir de parámetros de los indicadores de Diversidad de arbolado, Índi ce biótico del suelo y Densidad de árboles. 3. Se evaluó el impacto de la propuesta a través del Índice de funcionalidad de parques para el humedal y el indicador de Confort térmico para las calles. Resultados . El incremento de la masa vegetal en la propue sta de reforestación urbana del espacio abierto, presenta impactos positivos en dos situaciones complementarias: los espacios naturales urbanos y las calles, considerando los indicadores: Escenario 1. Para los espacios naturales urbanos se consideró el Índ ice de Funcionalidad de parques en la propuesta de reforestación da un valor cercano a 10, donde supera el valor deseable para el caso de ciudades templadas de 7.5, demostrando la existencia de mayor riqueza ecológica en las ciudades tropicales como un val or a mantener. Escenario 2. Para las calles se consideró el indicador de Confort térmico en la propuesta de arborización se obtiene entre 7 y 9 horas de confort en el 74 % del polígono donde los valores deseables establecidos son en el 75%. Conclusión . La conservación e incremento de las comunidades vegetales de los humedales y la arborización de calles mejoran de manera directa la calidad de vida en las ciudades tropicales y disminuye el impacto del cambio climático. La continuidad v egetal entre ambos escenarios refuerza el sistema de espacios abiertos, disminuyendo la isla de calor. En estos contextos los proyectos de forestación urbana pueden considerarse un instrumento de sostenibilidad básico que contribuye al incremento de la bio div ersidad y del confort térmico.

Subsurface water masses with permanent oxygen deficiency (oxygen minimum zones, OMZ) are typically associated with upwelling regions and exhibit a high sensitivity to climate variability. Over the last decade, several studies have reported a global ocean deoxygenation trend since 1960 and a consequent OMZ expansion. However, some proxy records suggest an oxygenation trend for the OMZ over the margins of the Tropical North East Pacific since ca. 1850. At the Tropical South East Pacific, the upper Peruvian margin is permanently impinged by a shallow and intense OMZ. In this study, we aim to (1) reconstruct the (multi)decadal oxygenation variability off central Peru, and (2) to identify the influence of both largescale and local factors and the potential underlying mechanisms driving subsurface oxygenation in the Eastern Pacific. We combined a multiproxy approach in multiple paleoceanographic records for the last ∼170 years with instrumental records of subsurface oxygen concentrations since 1960. We analyzed benthic foraminiferal assemblages, redox-sensitive metals (Mo, Re, U), δ15N and contents of total organic carbon and biogenic silica in multiple sediment cores collected in the upper margin off Callao (180 m) and Pisco (∼300 m). An OMZ weakening over the Peruvian central margin can be inferred from 1865 to 2004. The records can be divided in three major periods, based on responses of local productivity and subsurface ventilation: (i) the mid to late 19th century, with enhanced siliceous productivity, a strong oxygen-deficient and reducing sedimentary conditions; (ii) the late 19th century to mid-twentieth century, with less oxygen-deficient and reducing sedimentary conditions, superimposed to a slight decadal-scale variability; and (iii) the late 20th century until the early 2000’s, with a slight oxygenation trend. We attribute the centennial-scale oxygenation trend in the Tropical East Pacific to ventilation processes by undercurrents that decreased subsurface oxygenation even when during the same period an overall increase in export production was inferred off Peru. Unlike other upwelling areas in the Tropical East Pacific, subsurface oxygenation off Peru does not show a decrease in the last decades, instead a subtle oxygenation trend was observed close to the core of the OMZ at 200 m depth.

Hay un cierto consenso que estamos viviendo un momento de “crisis sistémica” o crisis multidimensional, con extraordinarios retos globales relacionados con los conflictos, el desarrollo, la pobreza y la desigualdad, los flujos migratorios, el debilitamiento de la democracia y el cambio climático, entre otras cuestiones. La adopción de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ods) aprobados en septiembre de 2015 tratan de dar respuesta a estos problemas globales, integrando tres dimensiones del desarrollo: económica, social y ambiental, con carácter integral e indivisible, y aportan como novedad la paz y la seguridad. La Agenda 2030 señala, de manera acertada, que no puede haber desarrollo sostenible sin paz, ni paz sin desarrollo. Los páramos son considerados escenarios importantes para la mitigación del impacto del cambio climático, ya que sus suelos pueden capturar y secuestrar CO2, uno de los principales gases de efecto invernadero. Con el fin de determinar el efecto que causan las actividades antrópicas sobre la capacidad de captura de CO2 se usaron parcelas permanentes de muestreo (PPM) ubicadas en un área intervenida antropicamente (agricultura intensiva sin tecnificar y ganadería extensiva), no intervenida y en recuperación, en el complejo de páramos de Guantiva-La Rusia (Boyacá). La PPM en recuperación mostró mayor capacidad de captura con un valor promedio de 872,26 ton ha-1 en contraste la PPM con menor capacidad fue la intervenida con valor promedio de 221,70 ton ha-1, esto evidencia el efecto negativo que ejerce la actividad antrópica sobre la capacidad de captura de carbono de estos suelos, y el papel que juegan estos ecosistemas como sumideros de carbono y por ende la importancia de su protección y conservación.

Este artículo resalta la necesidad de involucrar a la historia en la construcción de estrategias adaptativas para el presente y el futuro. También presenta un balance sobre algunas de las reflexiones sobre la adaptación frente al cambio climático en perspectiva histórica, principalmente desde el mundo anglosajón, pero con trabajos pioneros para América Latina. El texto invita a ir más allá de las historias de coyunturas y fracasos, para reconstruir visiones de mediano y largo plazo sobre la relación clima-sociedad, que incluyan los casos en los cuales el resultado no fue fatídico. Por último, señala algunas tareas y metodologías que los historiadores ambientales latinoamericanos pueden incluir en sus agendas investigativas. Abstract This article highlights how important is the participation of history in the design of adaptive strategies for the present and future. Also, it does a balance about some reflections on adaptation to climate change in historical perspective, mainly from the Anglo-Saxon academic world, but with some exceptions from Latin America. The article is an invitation to go beyond the stories of conjuncture and failures, to reconstruct medium and long-term visions about the relationship between climate and society, which include the cases in which the result was not fateful. Finally, it indicates some tasks and methodologies for research agendas of environmental historians in Latin America.
