Julio Camarero Description An account of the resource The assessment of the long-term impacts of drought on tree growth decline using tree-ring analyses may be used to test if plantations are more vulnerable to warming after successive droughts, leading to a &ldquo;cumulative stress&rdquo; effect. We selected 76 Pinus pinaster trees (declining and non-declining trees), and basal area increments over the last 20 years (BAI20) were calculated to build the chronologies for the stand types and vigor classes. Resistance, recovery and resilience indices were calculated. Pearson correlations, analyses and Partial Least-Squares regression were used to analyze the relationships among the response and environmental variables. We found a negative and significant relationship between mean temperature for May and June of the current year and growth in the naturally regenerated stands. This negative effect on growth under warm spring conditions was more noticeable in plantations than in naturally regenerated stands. A negative trend along time was found for the resilience index in planted stands. Evapotranspiration, maximum temperature and annual radiation showed significant and negative correlations with the growth of declining trees from planted stands, indicating they are susceptible to drought stress. Declining trees in planted stands showed a loss of growth resilience, specifically a negative trend after successive droughts. Kursar Description An account of the resource Coevolutionary theory has long predicted that the arms race between plants and herbivores is a major driver of host selection and diversification. At a local scale, plant defenses contribute significantly to the structure of herbivore assemblages and the high alpha diversity of plants in tropical rain forests. However, the general importance of plant defenses in host associations and divergence at regional scales remains unclear. Here, we examine the role of plant defensive traits and phylogeny in the evolution of host range and species divergence in leaf-feeding sawflies of the family Argidae associated with Neotropical trees in the genus Inga throughout the Amazon, the Guiana Shield and Panama. Our analyses show that the phylogenies of both the sawfly herbivores and their Inga hosts are congruent, and that sawflies radiated at approximately the same time, or more recently than their Inga hosts. Analyses controlling for phylogenetic effects show that the evolution of host use in the sawflies associated with Inga is better correlated with Inga chemistry than with Inga phylogeny, suggesting a pattern of delayed host tracking closely tied to host chemistry. Finally, phylogenetic analyses show that sister species of Inga-sawflies are dispersed across the Neotropics, suggesting a role for allopatric divergence and vicariance in Inga diversification. These results are consistent with the idea that host defensive traits play a key role not only in structuring the herbivore assemblages at a single site, but also in the processes shaping host association and species divergence at a regional scale. El estudio se enfocó en glaciares representativos de cuatro zonas climáticas diferentes, a saber: trópicos interiores, trópicos exteriores húmedos del norte, trópicos exteriores húmedos del sur y trópicos exteriores secos. Se calcularon los cambios en la línea de nieve máxima anual para el período de 1985―2015, y también los cambios decenales en el área entre 1975 y 2015. Se observó que los glaciares tanto de los trópicos interiores como de los trópicos exteriores se sometieron a retroceso durante todo el período de estudio, con énfasis entre 1975 y 1997, lapso coincidente con el período de calentamiento del Pacífico. Este experimento se llevó a cabo con el objetivo de evaluar los efectos de cianamida de hidrógeno sobre la brotación en pistache (Pistacia vera L.) desarrollado en una región árida con insuficientes horas frío (¿7.2 oC). Yemas en dormancia sobre ramas de uno a cinco años de edad fueron tratadas en febrero 20 del 2006 y 2007 con 0, 25.5 y 51.0 g·L-1 de H2CN2 [equivalente a 0, 2.5 y 5.0 % (v/v) de H2CN2]. Cianamida de hidrógeno adelantó e incrementó la brotación en ramas de 1 a 5 años de edad. La mayor brotación se observó cuando se aplicó H2CN2 al 5.0 %, sin causar fitotoxicidad. Cianamida de hidrógeno aplicada al 5.0 % ¿ 30 días antes de inicios de brotación puede incrementar la brotación y compensar las horas frío cuando el pistache se desarrolla en ambientes con inviernos benignos. The analysis is based on an Applied and Microeconomic General Equilibrium Model and on the estimates of the direct effects of CC on maize yields obtained from the related literature. The results show that climate change will reduce the real rural income by 6.23% and will affect corn production to the extent that the area will change from being a surplus to a deficit. En dicho contexto, el trabajo se plantea como objetivo central contribuir a solucionar este problema, a partir de una propuesta metodológica para el estudio de las periferias espontáneas de las ciudades latinoamericanas de escala intermedia, desde la perspectiva del desarrollo sostenible, poniendo énfasis en la dimensión física, ambiental y climática. Para ello, la investigación se organiza en tres partes: revisión y análisis de la información existente sobre la temática y consulta a expertos, para la determinación de criterios; la determinación de acciones prioritarias; y una propuesta de estructura que sustenta un sistema de indicadores. Los resultados del trabajo proponen una batería de treinta y nueve (39) indicadores referenciales, articulados en cuatro subsistemas relacionados con: la vulnerabilidad física-ambiental y climática, el eje ambiental, el desarrollo urbano y la cohesión social. Estos constituyen la principal conclusión del trabajo, el que, se espera, será útil para comenzar a tomar las primeras decisiones frente al problema de este tipo de periferias. Title A name given to the resource Modelo computacional para el estudio y predicción del clima Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Enrique Pazos Description An account of the resource En vista del inminente cambio climático global, es necesario contar con modelos matemáticos regionales y globales que puedan proyectar con detalle las tendencias futuras de temperatura, humedad, precipitación, viento y absorción de radiación solar, entre otras. Con esta motivación, presentamos los resultados preliminares de un modelo fí­sico cuantitativo que describe el movimiento, densidad y temperatura de masas de aire en la atmósfera. El modelo se basa en la solución numérica de las ecuaciones de Euler para aire seco, por medio del método de volúmenes finitos. El modelo es utilizado para describir la evolución en el tiempo de masas de aire tibio y frí­o en un perfil bidimensional que representa una sección vertical de la atmósfera. Se incluye también el efecto de la curvatura del suelo por medio de coordenadas que siguen el perfil topográfico del terreno. En los resultados de la simulación es posible observar que el movimiento del aire genera diferentes patrones en las corrientes de viento y distribución de temperatura en la atmósfera, los cuales afectan distintos lugares dependiendo de la velocidad de advección de la masa de aire. Este estudio es un primer paso en la predicción a futuro de los efectos del cambio climático en el territorio de Guatemala, los cuales son necesarios para poder tomar medidas y polí­ticas de adaptación y mitigación.
