Olivares, Matías Peredo-Parada Description An account of the resource Despite its theoretical relationship, the effect of body size on the performance of species distribution models (SDM) has only been assessed in a few studies, and to date, the evidence shows unclear results. In this context, Chilean fishes provide an ideal case to evaluate this relationship due to their short size (fishes between 5 cm and 40 cm) and conservation status, providing evidence for species at the lower end of the worldwide fish size distribution and representing a relevant management tool for species conservation. We assessed the effect of body size on the performance of SDM in nine Chilean river fishes, considering the number of records, performance metrics, and predictor importance. The study was developed in the Bueno and Valdivia basins of southern Chile. We used a neural network modeling algorithm, training models with a cross-validation scheme. The effect of fish size on selected metrics was assessed using linear models and beta regressions. While no relationship between fish size and the number of presences was found, our results indicate that the model specificity increases with fish size. Additionally, the predictive importance of Riparian Vegetation and Within-Channel Structures variables decreases for larger species. Our results suggest that the relationship between the grain of the dataset and the home range of the species could bias SDM, leading in our case, to overprediction of absences. We also suggest that evolutionary adaptation to low slopes among Chilean fishes increases the relevance of riparian vegetation in the SDMs of smaller species. This study provides evidence on how species size may bias SDM, which could potentially be corrected by adjusting the model grain. Horwitz, Günter Försterra Description An account of the resource While large mass mortality events (MMEs) are well known for toothed whales, they have been rare in baleen whales due to their less gregarious behavior. Although in most cases the cause of mortality has not been conclusively identified, some baleen whale mortality events have been linked to bio-oceanographic conditions, such as harmful algal blooms (HABs). In Southern Chile, HABs can be triggered by the ocean–atmosphere phenomenon El Niño. The frequency of the strongest El Niño events is increasing due to climate change. In March 2015, by far the largest reported mass mortality of baleen whales took place in a gulf in Southern Chile. Here, we show that the synchronous death of at least 343, primarily sei whales can be attributed to HABs during a building El Niño. Although considered an oceanic species, the sei whales died while feeding near to shore in previously unknown large aggregations. This provides evidence of new feeding grounds for the species. The combination of older and newer remains of whales in the same area indicate that MMEs have occurred more than once in recent years. Large HABs and reports of marine mammal MMEs along the Northeast Pacific coast may indicate similar processes in both hemispheres. Increasing MMEs through HABs may become a serious concern in the conservation of endangered whale species. Para las sequías históricas, los resultados del SPEI definen para las sequías leves, moderadas, severas y extremas los siguientes valores aproximados: 32.2, 11.5, 5.0 y 1.3%. Para esta ubicación del país se consideró conveniente formular tres escenarios del cambio climático: el primero acepta una reducción progresiva y lineal de 20% en la precipitación anual; el segundo adopta un aumento progresivo y lineal de 4 °C en la temperatura media anual, y el tercero sobrepone los dos efectos citados y, por lo tanto, es el más crítico. En los tres escenarios planteados se encuentra que las sequías leves y extremas aumentan de forma somera en número o porcentaje, y que las sequías moderadas y severas disminuyen también de manera mesurada. Se exponen los gráficos de evolución del SPEI de duración de 12 meses, histórico y del tercer escenario, en los cuales se visualizan con claridad las épocas de ocurrencia de los periodos de sequía, así como de las diferencias puntuales en el valor del SPEI. Con base en los resultados de estos análisis, se recomienda la aplicación sistemática del SPEI 176 en la caracterización de las sequías históricas y futuras. En estas últimas, los resultados tienen sólo un carácter orientativo.
