Con este trabajo se busca aportar elementos de análisis del funcionamiento e identificación de los forzantes que dominan la dinámica térmica de un embalse tropical de montaña. Se registró la temperatura y el nivel de agua en tres sitios del embalse durante tres muestreos. Además, se midieron los caudales de entrada y salida al embalse y se analizaron los registros climáticos históricos. Con esta información se construyeron los archivos de entrada del modelo bidimensional CE QUAL-W2, para simular cuatro escenarios climáticos (seco, lluvia, transición y el fenómeno El Niño). De las afluencias se evidenció que la quebrada Santa Mónica en términos hidrodinámicos ejerce su efecto hasta el sitio de captación; de otro lado, la quebrada la Nitrera presenta recirculaciones verticales que aumentan el tiempo de residencia lo que tiene consecuencias en la calidad del agua para este sector del embalse. Los resultados de este ejercicio preliminar de modelación indican que el comportamiento térmico del embalse responde de manera diferenciada según el escenario climático y la magnitud de las extracciones. Durante el fenómeno El Niño y ante un incremento del agua captada, el embalse disminuye el nivel de agua en cerca de un metro y aumenta su temperatura alrededor de 3°C en la zona central del embalse. Ante la tendencia de crecimiento del municipio, se espera mayores demandas de agua que deberán ser suplidas por el embalse, por lo que toman importancia las herramientas de modelación que apoyen la gestión ambiental y reduzcan el riesgo al desabastecimiento ante la vulnerabilidad al cambio de climático. En este trabajo se presenta un estudio de caso de la Estación de Abalá en el estado de Yucatán, México, para mostrar la aplicabilidad de Moclic a nivel local. These responses serve to maintain homeostasis and conserve vital resources such as water. The small size of birds confers a close coupling to the thermal environment and demands rapid adjustments to environmental challenges. Physiological responses to heat stress include hyperthermia, and increased evaporative cooling as environmental temperatures approach body temperature. Behaviorally, desert birds respond to heat stress by drastically reducing activity during the hottest parts of the day and selecting cool shaded microsites. This characteristic behavioral response presents a potential problem in the face of global warming. If birds totally forgo foraging during extremely hot periods, increased evaporative water loss rates due to higher environmental temperatures could lead to significant episodes of direct mortality for birds in these regions. A simple model is presented which integrates behavior and physiology to predict survival times based on dehydration tolerance, microsite selection and environmental temperature.Los ajustes de las aves a ambientes desérticos se caracterizan por la integración de la conducta y fisiología. Estas respuestas permiten mantener la homeostasis y conservar recursos vitales como el agua. El pequeño tamaño de las aves las acopla al ambiente térmico de un modo estrecho y demanda que ellas muestren respuestas rápidas a los desafíos del ambiente. Cuando la temperatura ambiente se aproxima a la temperatura corporal, las respuestas fisiológicas al estrés térmico incluyen hipertermia, así como un aumento en el enfriamiento por evaporación pulmo-cutánea. Conductualmente las aves responden al estrés calórico con la reducción de los patrones de actividad durante la parte mas calurosa del día, y seleccionando micro-sitios sombrados y más frescos. Frente al fenómeno de calentamiento global, estas características respuestas conductuales presentan problemas potenciales. Si las aves deben forrajear durante las horas más cálidas del día, la elevada pérdida de agua evaporativa podría significar episodios directos de mortalidad en estas regiones. Indekiu-Rivas Description An account of the resource En la región centroamericana, Guatemala comparte junto a Costa Rica, el tercer lugar en lo concerniente a la disponibilidad o volumen de agua. La cuenca del río Atulapa de 42.72 km2 de longitud, localizado en la parte alta del río Lempa, constituye un recurso hídrico de interés trinacional para las repúblicas de El Salvador, Honduras y Guatemala. La cuenca forma parte de la reserva Biosfera Transfronteriza Trifinio Fraternidad; declarada como reserva de biosfera en junio del 2011, por la Organizaciónde las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura. Debido a los efectos del cambio climático y utilización de la tierra en la cuenca, ha disminuido la capacidad de retención de agua del suelo, por lo que en el presente estudio se evaluó el balance hídrico del suelo con el modelo de Thornthwaite y Mather. Los métodos y técnicas aplicados permitieron generar y evaluar registros hidrometeorológicos con estaciones digitales instaladas; así como también, la utilización de estaciones locales. Posteriormente, se utilizó un Sistema de Información Geográfica para programar el modelo de balance hídrico en el suelo con Python, simulando la distribución espacial de la precipitación, evapotranspiración potencial y real, contenido de humedad en el suelo, almacenamiento y escorrentía superficial. La textura del suelo y su cobertura permitió determinar la capacidad de retención de humedad. El 85% del territorio de la cuenca posee texturas franco arcillo-arenosas de origen volcánico y cultivo de café. El caudal medio anual en el río Atulapa es 0.59 m3/seg, la precipitación potencial media es 1,916 mm/año, la evapotranspiración real media es 873.08 mm/año, el déficit de disponibilidad de agua del suelo es de 465 mm/año. La variabilidad biofísica de la cuenca del río Atulapa, determinó la dinámica del balance hídrico del suelo. Algo que, si bien parece entrar sin mayores problemas en la lógica del proceso de desarrollo de los derechos humanos, en último término viene a cuestionar los fundamentos mismos de tal proceso. El trabajo analiza asimismo la necesidad de una síntesis entre derechos humanos y derechos de la naturaleza habida cuenta de amenazas como las del cambio climático y concluye con una propuesta de “naturalización del individuo” en la que se incluyen aportaciones confucianas.   Abstract: In this paper we focus on the challenge for Human Rights – one of the greatest inventions of Western culture – that supposes the declaration/recognition of the Rights of Nature, Pachamama, present in the Latin-American Constitutions based on the so called “Andean Philosophy”. Although this seems to be coherent with the logic of the process of development of Human Rights, in the end it questions the very basis of that process and even discriminates the individual. We analyze as well the need of a synthesis between Human Rights and Rights of Nature, taking into account threats like climate change and we conclude with a proposal of “naturalization of the individual” in which some Confucian inputs are included. Se reconoce que las emisiones de estos gases pueden ser reducidas disminuyendo su emisión o aumentando su remoción y depósito, en sumideros terrestres . El suelo es el mayor sumidero de carbono (C) y mitiga su creciente concentración atmosférica . Los paisajes rurales alto-andinos retienen importantes cantidades de C orgánico del suelo (COS), teniendo un papel fundamental en su ciclo global, pero ha sido poco valorado . El objetivo de este estudio fue estimar el COS en los principales usos de la tierra y los impactos del cambio de uso en paisajes alto-andinos en Santa Isabel - Tolima, Colombia . Se evaluaron tres usos del suelo: (i) cultivos agrícolas (CA), (ii) sistemas silvo-pastoriles de pasturas con árboles dispersos (SSP) y (iii) bosques nativos (BN), estimando la densidad aparente, por el método del cilindro y la concentración de COS, a una profundidad de 0-40cm . La densidad aparente, se incrementó notablemente, al cambiar de BN a CA y SSP (0,35 a 0,61 y 0,65g/cm3, respectivamente) . Contrastando, la concentración de COS, se redujo al convertir BN a usos agropecuarios (8,9 a 5,8%) . Los BN almacenaron más C que los CA y SSP (122,4; 79,6 y 79,8t/ha, respectivamente), causando una emisión potencial de 157 t CO2/ha, en caso de deforestación . Procesos contrarios implican captura de C atmosférico . La conservación de BN alto-andinos debe estar altamente considerados en las políticas nacionales y regionales. Yang Description An account of the resource The atmospheric deposition of mercury (Hg) occurs via several mechanisms, including dry and wet scavenging by precipitation events. In an effort to understand the atmospheric cycling and seasonal depositional characteristics of Hg, wet deposition samples were collected for approximately 5 years at 17 selected GMOS monitoring sites located in the Northern and Southern hemispheres in the framework of the Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) project. Total mercury (THg) exhibited annual and seasonal patterns in Hg wet deposition samples. Interannual differences in total wet deposition are mostly linked with precipitation volume, with the greatest deposition flux occurring in the wettest years. This data set provides a new insight into baseline concentrations of THg concentrations in precipitation worldwide, particularly in regions such as the Southern Hemisphere and tropical areas where wet deposition as well as atmospheric Hg species were not investigated before, opening the way for future and additional simultaneous measurements across the GMOS network as well as new findings in future modeling studies.
