We provide new ecological and diversity data on fishes for these poorly studied rivers and new data for palm swamp habitats. With electric fishing techniques, we collected a total of 1934 fish specimens belonging to 78 species, 42 genera and 15 families. To assess main patterns of diversity we combined SIMPER and ANOSIM with canonical correspondence analysis to obtain an overview of the community structure of fish and their distribution related to aquatic habitats. Our results show an important shift on fish diversity at 700 m a.s.l. separating headwater and middle-lowland communities. Electrofishing was a hindrance due to the depth, flow and low conductivity of the rivers, but also allowed us to capture fish not observed with other techniques. We also compared the use of elevation with slope as an alternative variable for statistical analysis. Our results show that slope offers a solid and equivalent explanation for fish distribution variability, avoids redundance, and instead of giving geographical data offers ecologically solid information. El fenómeno presenta patrones espaciales evidentes y no es homogéneo en todas las localidades con características climáticas similares. Esto indica la existencia de diferentes factores que contribuyen al decaimiento -como las características del suelo relacionadas con la disponibilidad de agua- y de una apreciable capacidad de resiliencia de estos ecosistemas. De hecho, para que se produzca un declive poblacional debe existir un desequilibrio entre mortalidad y reclutamiento: cualquier factor que disminuya la mortalidad o favorezca el reclutamiento tenderá a potenciar esta resiliencia. Por tanto, los cambios en la composición de la comunidad y la eventual sustitución de especies se producirían cuando el resultado de este balance sea diferente entre las especies. Además, los efectos de estos episodios extremos de sequía pueden verse acentuados por la confluencia con otras perturbaciones, particularmente con aquellas que tienden a aumentar en las condiciones asociadas a la anomalía climática. Este es el caso de los incendios, con una especial incidencia en los ecosistemas mediterráneos. Los episodios de decaimiento deberían ayudar a incorporar el contexto de cambio climático a la gestión forestal. En particular sería conveniente introducir una aproximación proactiva que favorezca los mecanismos que tienden a incrementar la resiliencia de los ecosistemas terrestres y su adaptación a las nuevas condiciones climáticas, como por ejemplo la selección de especies y genotipos, la adecuación de la estructura del bosque a nivel de rodal a las condiciones climáticas futuras y la distribución de estos elementos a escala de paisaje. Cada año los productores primarios fijan cerca de 100 gigatoneladas de carbono org ánico, y cada año, prácticamente la misma cantidad de MO es descompuesta completando el ciclo global de carbono. No obstante, aunque la descomposici ón constituye un proceso ecosistémico, de importancia comparable a la producción primaria, se conoce mucho mejortodo lo relacionado con ésta última y el papel que desempeñan los organismos autótrofos en la misma, que lo relativo a los procesos de descomposici ón y, especialmente, al papel que llevan a cabo los microorganismos en ellos. Existen diferentes razones para este desconocimiento. La m ás importante es que la descomposición es un proceso muy complejo que se manifiesta a nivel de comunidad, involucrando a m últiples organismos a distintas escalas espaciales y temporales, mientras que la producción primaria es un proceso que, en última instancia, se manifiesta a nivel de cada organismo autótrofo de forma individual e involucra a una fracción mucho menor de biodiversidad. Por otro lado, es muy complejo analizar la fracci ón microbiana que desarrolla la mayor parte de los procesos de descomposición y sólo muy recientemente se han empezado a desarrollar técnicas para estudiar el funcionamiento in situ de estas comunidades. Por todo ello, los estudios funcionales sobre elpapel de la descomposición en los ecosistemas son muy escasos, a pesar de las implicaciones que esto puede tener en la comprensi ón del ciclo de carbono y procesos relacionados, como el cambio climático y los mecanismos de intercambio de carbono entre la atmósfera y los ecosistemas acuáticos y terrestres. Precisamente en esta región se encuentran localizados los bosques inundados con mayor extensión y diversidad vegetal del mundo. En esos ambientes, la altura de la columna de agua puede fluctuar durante todo el año, llegando a valores promedio de hasta 10 m. La previsibilidad y duración del pulso de las inundaciones, la abrupta transición en las condiciones ambientales a lo largo del gradiente topográfico en los márgenes de los ríos principales y la intensidad de las corrientes de agua y la dinámica de los sedimentos representan una fuerte presión selectiva sobre las poblaciones de plantas y sus sistemas de reproducción. En este trabajo se examina y discute cómo el ciclo del agua influye en las estrategias de reproducción sexual y asexual que conducen a la realización del ciclo de vida de las plantas, permitiendo el mantenimiento de sus poblaciones. También se abordan las posibles restricciones sobre los procesos de germinación, el establecimiento de plántulas y la formación de bancos de semillas. Además, se indican algunas lagunas en el conocimiento existente sobre las estrategias reproductivas de la vegetación en las planicies de inundación de la Amazonía Central y se proponen líneas futuras de investigación. Se enfatiza en las especies herbáceas, debido a la gran variedad de formas de vida y estrategias reproductivas y su fuerte dinámica temporal y espacial en respuesta al ciclo hidrológico.
