Fire ecology is an interdisciplinary activity concerning the study of natural processes that involve fire interactions with biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystems. Numerous studies focused on the knowledge of the evolution of natural and human ecosystems under the recurrent influence of fire need the interdisciplinary work between Ecology and Earth Sciences. The effect of natural and anthropogenic fires on the evolution of the landscape, its impact on forest communities and the response of ecosystems to fires are topics for debate and should be evaluated at both temporal and spatial scales. In this paper we present some examples that show the extent to which the methodology applied to the study of the production, dispersion and deposition of sedimentary charcoal in lake basins and wetlands contributes to give answers to these debates. Objetivo: Identificar el estado nutricional y aspectos alimentarios en mujeres indígenas de tres comunidades del Departamento de Presidente Hayes, Chaco Paraguayo. Metodología: Estudio observacional de diseño transversal con componente analítico, que incluyó a 81 mujeres de 15 a 44 años de edad, de las etnias Maká y Toba Qom. Previo consentimiento informado, se realizó la valoración nutricional y la entrevista para obtener los datos sociodemográficos y alimentarios. Resultados: Las mujeres indígenas presentaron una frecuencia de sobrepeso de 30,8% y obesidad del 21,0%, mientras que el 1,2 % presentó desnutrición. No encontramos diferencia significativa entre las etnias, en relación al sobrepeso y obesidad, (p>0,05). Observamos que las indígenas tenían una alta ingesta de frutas, azúcares y mieles. El 87 y 88% de las mujeres indígenas de ambas etnias estudiadas refirieron no consumir lácteos y derivados y entre 65 y 69% refirieron no consumir verduras. Conclusiones: Observamos un elevado porcentaje de obesidad y sobrepeso, un bajo consumo de lácteos y verduras y un alto consumo de azúcares, relacionados posiblemente a cambios en los aspectos alimentarios y sus costumbres, influenciados por la cercanía a las zonas urbanas y el acceso a alimentos de menor precio y mayor contenido energético. La tostadora es la que cumple más aspectos básicos de inocuidad y calidad, la microempresa de noni cumple con algunos de los requerimientos para mejorar la calidad de sus productos y la microempresa de cajetas no ha empezado a implementar aún estos programas. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar (BCA) con 6 tratamientos y 4 repeticiones. Las mezclas de los sustratos obtuvieron mejor respuesta para la variable firmeza que el tratamiento suelo, además, el tratamiento 100 % cascarilla de arroz obtuvo una respuesta superior en las variables grados Brix y acidez titulable, permitiendo generar una propuesta innovadora y competitiva para la producción de fresa en áreas reducidas en Nariño. Sin embargo, diversos estudios sugieren que la percepción y el conocimiento sobre serpientes podrían ser más positivos en una población urbana con alto nivel educativo. Objetivo: Evaluar la percepción y el conocimiento sobre serpientes en los funcionarios de una universidad pública costarricense. Métodos: Diseñé una encuesta de 13 preguntas, unas dirigidas a evaluar la percepción y otras dirigidas a evaluar el conocimiento. Resultados: Apliqué la encuesta a 340 funcionarios, 95% posee estudios universitarios y vive dentro de la Gran Área Metropolitana; el 40% siente miedo por las serpientes. Las mujeres sienten más temor y desagrado que los hombres. La mayoría subestima o ignora la cantidad de especies de serpientes, sobreestima o ignora la cantidad de serpientes peligrosas y subestima el tamaño máximo de una serpiente en Costa Rica, 73% mencionó más especies venenosas que no venenosas.
