<text>Background and aims: Many models have been developed to evaluate crop growth and development, but few are capable of simulating grapevine systems. The present study was carried out to evaluate the ability of the STICS model to represent grapevine phenology, biomass production, yield and soil water content in two situations differing with respect to rainfall distribution and water management strategies. Methods and results: Simulations were performed for an irrigated vineyard in Chile and an irrigated and a non-irrigated vineyard in France. The crop model gave a good estimation of the main stages of grapevine phenology (less than six days difference between simulated and observed values). Soil water content was the best simulated variable (R2 = 0.99), whereas grapevine evapotranspiration observed only in Chile (R2 = 0.43) and leaf area index observed only in France (R2= 0.80) were the worst simulated variables. Biomass production, yield and their components were correctly simulated (within the 95 % Student confidence interval around the mean observed value). A comparison of the fraction of transpirable soil water and vine water potential measurements with the water stress indices calculated by the STICS model showed that the time and duration of the grapevine water stress period was correctly estimated. Conclusions: Therefore, the STICS model was reasonably successful in simulating vine growth and development, and identifying critical periods concerning the vine water status. Significance of the study: The STICS model can be used to evaluate various water management strategies and their impacts on grape production.</text>

Palabras Clave: Cesar, explotación de carbón, minería, conflictos territoriales, desplazamiento forzado, ecología política, medio ambiente, derechos territoriales ¿WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE LOCOMOTIVE IS RUNNING? TRANSFORMATIONS AND TERRITORIAL CONFLICTS CAUSED BY COAL MINING IN CESAR The article presents an investigation about territorial conflicts in the center of Cesar, originated by the coal mining increment occurred during the past years. Based on the political ecology theories and territorial rights, the author explains the territorial transformations in the center of Cesar, proceeding from mining activities. He describes and studies the strong impact that this industry has had in the population lifestyle, and the territory. There is a special attention to the territorial conflicts, forced displacement conflict, environmental hazard from opencast mining, the violation of civil rights on communities, especially labor rights, and the social mobilization dynamics. The author concludes, communities putting up with the transformation and territorial conflict proceeding from mining, are not taking advantage nor of the mining resources extracted from their territories, neither from the profits proceeding from commerce. <text>ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effect of an organomineral fertilizer enriched with humic substances on soybean grown under water stress. The experiment was performed in a greenhouse using a Red Latosol (Oxisol) with adequate fertility as substrate, in which soybean plants were cultivated with and without water stress. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme (two moisture levels and five fertilizer doses: 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mL dm-3), totaling 10 treatments, with four replicates. The organomineral fertilizer was applied in the soil 21 days after plant emergence and the water regimes were established one week thereafter. The fertilizer was not able to attenuate the effects of water stress, reducing soybean grain yield by more than 50% compared with plants cultivated under no stress. Fertilizer doses caused positive response on soybean nutrition and grain yield and, under water stress condition, the most efficient dose was 5.4 mL dm-3. There were lower leaf concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and higher concentrations of sulfur in plants under stress. Humic substances favor the absorption of micronutrients.</text>

The Madre de Dios Basin is a region totally inserted in the humid tropic and covers a large section of the Peruvian and Bolivian Oriente. This region with extensive natural areas has already started to show changes in its spatial organisation. Though it was settled by different ethnic groups since ancient times, it has been in the last three decades that sorne important changes have occurred in the man-environment relationships. To study binational basins such as the one of Madre de Dios, brings about many technical and political difficulties. This is because the research project design must be broadly oriented to cover topics such as physical, socioeconomic, political, and institutional. In this paper 1 present the results of a fieldwork experience in the region. They give us a synthetic view of the Madre de Dios reality, placing special attention to the environmental realm, its characterization of the political and administrative units, and a strategy to integral development. Land management, ecodevelopment and integration are key elements toward a decision-making strategy that takes the basin as a framework to regional planning.</text>

Because of the negative effects caused by chemical fertilizers on the deterioration of the environment, work has been done, for some decades, in the introduction of fertilization alternatives in crop management. Mycorrhization is one of the biological techniques used in many of them; however, in pastures it has not been widely extended in production and the studies have aimed at legumes and very few grasses. Mycorrhizae allow successful application by means of seed covering. On the other hand, mycorrhizal relationships can be the key to decrease the amount of fertilizers (especially phosphates) that should be applied to obtain good yields; in soils with high P contents the inoculation with mycorrhiza increases growth and the early establishment of crops. Plants develop a higher biological quality, regarding more height, vigor and leaf area, and yields are increased (between 15 and 50%). It protects roots against certain pathogenic fungi. In addition, the biofertillizer allows to save up to 50% of the volume of the necessary chemical products, which favors input and cost reduction and influences the exertion of a sustainable and ecologically healthier agriculture.</text>
