Amongst them, the organic carbon (OC) content and the content and type of iron oxides present in the soil have been related as the most important. This work is aimed at evaluating soil aggregate behavior regarding to the role of organic carbon, and forms of iron oxides in two soils developed from basalt in subtropical Brazil. Aggregates with size less than 8 mm of an Udorthents and a Paleudult under forest, pasture and conventional tillage of the steep backslope of Sul Riograndense plateau were shaked in water during 0, 30, 60 and 90 minutes. The aggregate distribution in three size classes was measured as well as the content of OC, iron extractable with ditionite-citrate-bicarbonate (Fe d) and ammonium oxalate (Fe o) in the aggregates. The Udorthents showed greater content of soil OC than Paleodult and the forest soil showed greater content of soil OC than pasture and conventional tillage. The content of Fe d and Fe o were similar between both soils and uses. The studied soils showed a differentiated degree of aggregate hierarchy (AH). The most stable aggregates (90min of shaking) presented a trend to possess greater content of OC than the less stable ones (0min of shaking). Amongst the variables considered in this study, the content of OC was the attribute that more affects the expression of AH and the action of iron oxides in the aggregation not only depends on its type and amount, but also of the content of soil OC. It was also observed that the most stable aggregates (90min of shaking) tended to present greater content of Fe d and smaller content of Fe o.</text>

This article concerns the questioning of cultural values among farm families and specifically presents various representations that have been constructed by young people and women about the notion of marriage. To discuss the meaning, importance and the redefinitions currently being established about the category of marriage, an analysis was conducted of the statements of the sons and daughters of farm families collected during my doctoral research in western Santa Catarina state. Based on the analysis of the representations and actions of rural youth, an emergence of conflicts was identified concerning the choice of family models and marriage. This has influenced the life plans made by young men and women and gives importance to the factor of gender in the migratory movement of youth.</text>

The development of lettuce plantlets was evaluated, employing different substrate types and applying foliar biofertilization. The research was done in a green house in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. The experimental design was of randomized blocks with four replications. The treatments were composed of the interaction substract type (composed organic, Golden Mix 11, washed sand and humus + washed sand 1:1) and fertilizer (the commercial organo-mineral Fertamin, the witness and tree biofertilizer types). Plantlets were foliar fertilized 8 and 15 days after sowing date. Plantlets treated with Fertamim presented the best results in the dry matter of the aerial part, dry matter of roots and number of leaves. Among the biofertilizers, the one based on cattle manure, leached ash, milk and broth of sugar cane presented the lesser values for the same evaluated characteristics. The organic substract presented the highest values for all the appraised characteristics, except for root length.</text>

The municipality of Camalaú, in the Paraiban Cariri, is known for its production of renaissance lace. This activity is of great economic importance in the region, evidenced by, among other things, the quantity of women who work in the lace production. Data from the Banco do Nordeste (Northeastern Bank) report four thousand women dedicated simultaneously to family farming and crafts. Because of factors such as lack of public policies for family farms, land tenure concentration and the worsening of conditions for the reproduction of agriculture in drought periods, craft production has increased in the region. Observation shows that men have a relevant participation in lace production, even though it is considered a women's activity. This article examines craftwork as an income source, wrought with meanings from gender relations, emphasizing that the activity is of men and women whose daily activities link work, child socialization and play.</text>

This is an observational cross-sectional study developed with application of semi-structured questionnaire and evaluating menus. Eighty-two cities from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil participated of the study. Of these cities reported, 74.1% performed the purchase of products of FF for BSFP. The lack of interest of farmers and the deficient hygienic and sanitary conditions were the main difficulties reported. The quality of the menus offered to the schoolchildren improved significantly after the implementation of FF purchases. The partnership between FF and BSFP can contribute greatly to the development of healthy eating habits, not only by offering better nutritional quality menus, but also by implementing of nutritional education activities guided by the sustainable production and consumption of food.</text>

The control of helminth infections has an essential role in the productivity of dairy cattle. Sustainability, cost/benefit and feasibility of the chosen control measures, must be taking into account for each production system. This study aimed to establish criteria for anthelmintic treatment of dairy cattle, in different categories, based on eggs per gram of feces (EPG) counting. For this purpose, it were analyzed fecal samples from 100 dairy cattle, in different age groups, from small farms of the Central region of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Based on these results, the selective treatments, based on EPG, are indicated to female calves (until three months old) and lactating cows, and the strategic control to male and female calves, from four to 24 months old.</text>

In this text we discuss the origin, economic structuring, and labor social relations in the tobacco culture segment. Among the distinct theoretical visions about the issue of family agriculture, particularly that of tobacco economy, we have elected the Weberian notion of asset management, in order to understand farmers' current strategies. We discuss that, differently from the business reason oriented to acquisition-oriented profit, those family farmers have strategies deprived of capitalist calculation. Finally, we comment on the weak defense that points out the inevitable proletarization of tobacco farmers.</text>
