Introducción. Aedes aegypti es el principal vector de fiebre amarilla urbana, dengue, chikungunya y zika. Se ha demostrado que la distribución biogeográfica de esta especie se ha expandido debido al calentamiento global y a factores socioeconómicos y culturales. Los cambios en los patrones de la distribución altitudinal de este vector y su infección con el virus son prioridades de la investigación encaminada a desarrollar estrategias de vigilancia entomológica y virológica en salud pública. Objetivo. Evaluar la presencia de A. aegypti y su infección natural por el virus del dengue en alturas superiores a los 1.800 msnm en dos municipios periféricos del Valle de Aburrá, Antioquia, Colombia. Materiales y métodos. Se instalaron 21 ovitrampas en los municipios de Bello y San Pedro de los Milagros, en un rango altitudinal de 1.882 a 2.659 msnm. Los adultos que emergieron de las ovitrampas se evaluaron con reacción en cadena de la polimerasa en tiempo real (RT-PCR) para la detección del virus del dengue. Resultados. Se recolectaron 367 adultos de A. aegypti, siete de los cuales se encontraron a una altitud de 2.302 msnm en Tierradentro, Bello. Se detectaron 12 especímenes de A. aegypti positivos para dengue serotipo 2 en el barrio París de Bello, a 1.984 msnm. Conclusión. Por primera vez se registró A. aegypti a 2.302 msnm, la mayor altitud registrada para este vector en Colombia. De igual forma, se encontró infección con el virus del dengue a 1.984 msnm. Estos hallazgos son significativos, ya que determinan regiones de Colombia con riesgo potencial de transmisión autóctona de dengue y otros arbovirus por A. aegypti.

Se han registrado numerosos impactos relacionados con el cambio climático en los bosques ibéricos que pueden cambiar la composición, estructura y funcionamiento de los mismos.Es importante considerar que los efectos del cambio climático interactúan comúnmente con otros motores de cambio, dificultando de esta manera la cuantificación de la contribución delcambio climático en los impactos observados. Entre los impactos registrados encontramos alteraciones fisiológicas, fenológicas, demográficas y de distribución, las cuales a su vez puedenprovocar cambios en la composición, estructura y funcionamiento de los ecosistemas forestales ibéricos. A medida que el cambio climático avance, y las condiciones climáticas se alejen cadavez más de las actuales, se espera un aumento de los impactos observados. En este contexto, se hace necesario evaluar correctamente la vulnerabilidad de poblaciones, especies y ecosistemas frente al cambio climático futuro para poder diseñar y aplicar medidas de adaptación eficaces que minimicen los impactos y favorezcan el proceso de ajuste a las nuevas condiciones. La aplicación de las medidas de adaptación debe enmarcarse en una gestión adaptativa y anticipadora, que fomente la colaboración activa entre todos los actores involucrados en la gestión e investigación de los bosques ibéricos.

El Cambio Climático es causado entre otros factores por las actividades humanas a través de la emisión de CO 2 y otros ga ses. Gran parte de estas emisiones provienen del sector energético. L a solución al problema pasa por un cambio en el sistema energético, que es posible con una mayor participación de las energías renovables. Promover sus tecnologías ofrece doble ventaja: diversificación energética y la esperanza de desarrollo para comunidades pobres y aisladas sin posibilidad de conexión a la red eléctrica. Por esta razón en la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, se vienen desarrollando máquinas hidráulicas en pequeña escala q ue puedan desarrollarse completamente en forma local e instalarse en zonas aisladas de la Provincia de Córdoba Argentina. En este artículo se describen las principales características adoptadas para el desarrollo y construcción de dos microturbinas: Michel l – Banki y Hélice. Se describen también las simplificaciones adoptadas para hacerlas accesibles tecnológicamente y económicamente.

Durante la última década se han reportado numerosos casos de infección por Trypanosoma cruzi por vía oral, debidos a la contaminación de alimentos con heces de triatominos silvestres o con secreciones de reservorios en áreas donde los vectores domiciliados han sido controlados o no hay antecedentes de domiciliación. Con base en criterios epidemiológicos, clínicos y socioeconómicos, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación (FAO) y la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) establecieron una clasificación de los parásitos transmitidos por contaminación de alimentos en diferentes regiones del mundo, en la cual T. cruzi ocupó el décimo lugar de importancia en un grupo de 24 parásitos. Los cambios ambientales, como la deforestación y el calentamiento global, han afectado los ecotopos y el comportamiento de los vectores y de los reservorios de T. cruzi, de manera que estos se han desplazado a nuevas zonas, generando una nueva forma de transmisión por contaminación de alimentos que requiere su evaluación en el país. La presente revisión aborda la transmisión oral de la enfermedad de Chagas con énfasis en los estudios orientados a identificar los factores de riesgo, las especies de triatominos involucrados, la fisiopatología de la infección oral y los genotipos del parásito que están implicados en esta forma de transmisión en Colombia y en otras regiones de América Latina, así como la necesidad de adoptar políticas para su control y vigilancia epidemiológica

Este artículo analiza y reivindica el poder constituyente de los pueblos en la escena internacional. Observa cómo, en un mundo globalizado, la capacidad de acción de una gran mayoría de Estados parece atrapada en el discurso neoliberal, en democracias radicalmente cooptadas por medios de comunicación y por la influencia de grupos financieros, que menguan su capacidad para enfrentar los problemas que afectan a todos los pueblos. Sea que se trate de la reforma a la Organización de Naciones Unidas; sea sobre la guerra o las violaciones masivas de derechos humanos; sea sobre la crisis ambiental planetaria y en particular sobre el cambio climático o las organizaciones internacionales financieras y el inestable sistema perpetuado por ellas, este artículo apuesta por la oportunidad para los pueblos de ejercer su poder constituyente. En relación con los procesos de constitucionalización del derecho internacional, se formula un interrogante: ¿tienen futuro esos procesos sin una toma en consideración de los pueblos, de su poder legitimador, sus luchas, sus resistencias y sus aportes desde diversas perspectivas culturales? Se argumenta que los individuos y los pueblos deben ser el fundamento de la organización política internacional. La tesis central sustenta el imperativo, para los pueblos, de reivindicar su poder legitimador para promover una democracia global que cierre espacios a la uniformización del mundo, consolidando a la vez un foro comunicativo entre las diversas culturas que permita determinar hasta dónde va “el universal” que nos hace a todos humanos y hastadónde van las especificidades culturales y políticas de los pueblos inscritas en otras formas posibles de mundialización

La ganadería bovina constituye un rubro muy importante en la sociedad nicaragüense, esta se basa principalmente en pastos y forrajes, lo que la vuelve frágil ante los cambios en distribución del hato ganadero, malas prácticas pecuarias y cambio climático. Como una alternativa para mejorar los sistemas de producción se ha investigado mucho en las gramíneas del género Brachiarias, sin embargo, si no hay adopción de las mismas, todo esfuerzo es en vano. Este estudio identificó que los factores socioeconómicos más importantes en los municipios de Matiguás, Rio Blanco, Muy Muy y Paiwas para la adopción del pasto Marandú son: Presencia de proyectos en la zona, topografía, resistencia del pasto a la sequía, asistencia técnica, nivel de escolaridad y que en productores donde confluyan estos factores la probabilidad de adopción es del 95%. Para llegar a estos resultados se hicieron encuestas a 130 productores de los municipios mencionados y se analizaron mediante un modelo logit, donde la variable independiente era adopción y las dependientes se agruparon en características del productor, del sistema, del pasto y factores externos

En este artículo exponemos la pertinencia de integrar dos paradigmas de investigación para analizar la vulnerabilidad y resiliencia social frente a impactos del cambio climático (CC). Lo anterior a través de un estudio reflexivo sobre una investigación desarrollada en dos etapas, la primera desde el paradigma interpretativo y la segunda desde el crítico. Se recurrió a una metodología mixta. Durante la primera etapa se aplicó un cuestionario y entrevistas semiestructuradas; en la segunda etapa el trabajo se desarrolló a través de talleres participativos y grupos focales. En esta última se abrieron espacios para detonar y gestionar acciones de resiliencia social frente a embates del CC, principalmente inundaciones agravadas por fenómenos hidrometeorológicos, en tres localidades del estado de Veracruz, México. Participaron estudiantes y profesores de bachillerato. Los resultados revelan que la integración de los paradigmas antes mencionados resulta pertinente tanto para conocer y analizar la situación sobre vulnerabilidad y resiliencia social desde los contextos escolares definidos en cada localidad como para contribuir a detonar, en población joven, acciones participativas y comprometidas con su comunidad en asuntos de vulnerabilidad frente a impactos del CC, buscando con esto avanzar hacia la resiliencia social frente al CC, en respuesta a los actuales desafíos de la educación ambiental frente a este fenómeno.

La sequía terminal es una limitante mundial para la producción de frijol y se acentuará por efecto del cambio climático. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar fenotípicamente líneas avanzadas y germoplasma comercial de frijol por su resistencia a sequía terminal. La investigación se realizó durante el 2012 y 2013 en el Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), Palmira, Colombia; bajo riego y sequía terminal. Se utilizó un látice 4x4 parcialmente balanceado con cuatro repeticiones. Para lograr la condición de sequía terminal, el riego se suspendió a los 22-23 días después de la siembra. La sequía terminal redujo, en promedio, un 68% el rendimiento. Las líneas SEN 56, BFS 29, NCB 226 y SER 16, mostraron alto rendimiento en riego (3617-3836 kg/ha) y en sequía terminal (1232-1447 kg/ha), mientras que las líneas RCB 593 y G 40001 mostraron alto rendimiento (>1270 kg/ha) en sequía terminal y similar al de los testigos bajo riego. Las líneas más resistentes mostraron menores índices de susceptibilidad a sequía (0,88 - 1,00), aceleración de la madurez (56 - 60 dds), media geométrica superior (1931 - 2311 kg/ha) y mayor número de granos/m2 (673 - 1250). Las líneas más resistentes obtuvieron al menos un 15 y 50% más de rendimiento en riego y sequía terminal, respectivamente, que EAP 9510-77, testigo comercial para Centroamérica. Además, superaron a otros testigos comerciales como DOR 390 y Bribrí.

Livestock farming in Latin America has been criticized because of its large greenhouse gas (GHG) production resulting from the use of degraded forage and low-efficiency production performance. Agriculture contributes a significant amount of the three main greenhouse gases: methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O). Methane has a global warming potential 25 times greater than CO2. Enteric methane is an important greenhouse gas responsible for approximately 15% of global warming. The trend and legal obligation of mitigating greenhouse gas emissions will likely directly influence improved efficiency of livestock systems, including animal nutrition and handling. The development of mitigation strategies and the viability of their practical applications have been researched around the world. Various nutritional strategies to mitigate enteric methane have been studied and developed. All of them differ in terms of viability, cost, and acceptance by the producers. Their adoption should be based on the capacity to reduce methane emissions in association with economic viability and animal performance. Animal performance improvement will be achieved in production systems (mainly those related to efficient forage use) associated with good management of nutrition, health and reproduction. These are important strategies to consolidate Brazil as a food producer to the world, respecting the demands regarding land, water, biodiversity conservation and emission of greenhouse gases.

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) have a unique yearly life cycle, in which successive generations breed and move northward from the southern USA in spring to the northern US and southern Canada by late summer; they overwinter in extremely restricted areas in central Mexico and along the California coast. Mexican overwintering populations have experienced significant mortality events recently, which have been hypothesized as increasing in frequency owing to climate change. Here, we test the hypothesis of climate-change causation of these mortality events, at least in part, finding significant local weather trends toward conditions lethal for monarch survival. We use ecological niche estimates and future climate projections to estimate future overwintering distributions; results anticipate dramatic reductions in suitability of present overwintering areas, and serious implications for local human economies.La mariposa monarca (Danaus plexippus) tiene un ciclo de vida singular, en el cual generaciones sucesivas se reproducen y migran hacia el norte, empezando en el sur de los Estados Unidos en la primavera y terminando en el norte de los Estados Unidos y sur del Canadá en verano. Pasan el invierno en unas pocas zonas muy restringidas del centro de México y la costa del estado de California. En tiempos recientes, las poblaciones en México han experimentado mortalidades significativas y se ha hipotetizado que la causa puede ser el cambio climático. En este artículo probamos, al menos en parte, la hipótesis del cambio climático como causa de estos eventos de mortalidad y encontramos un desplazamiento significativo del clima local hacia condiciones que son letales para la mariposa. Utilizamos estimados de nicho ecológico y proyecciones de climas futuros para definir futuras áreas de invernación. Nuestros resultados anticipan una reducción dramática en la calidad de estas áreas actuales e implicaciones serias para las economías locales.
