Práticas agrícolas têm sido desenvolvidas para reduzir a aplicação de insumos químicos e minimizar as agressões ao meio ambiente, produzindo alimentos mais saudáveis e ecologicamente corretos. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho da sucessão entre couve (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) e milho (Zea may L.), em consórcio com leguminosas para fins de adubação verde, sob plantio direto em manejo orgânico. O estudo foi conduzido em Seropédica, Região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro, em dois anos. Utilizaram-se, como adubos verdes, mucuna-anã (Mucuna deeringiana) e crotalária spectabilis (Crotalaria spectabilis) em consórcio com couve e em sucessão crotalária juncea (Crotalaria juncea) e mucuna-cinza (Mucuna pruriens) em consórcio com milho. Como controles utilizaram-se os monocultivos de couve e milho. O delineamento foi em blocos ao acaso, constituindo fatorial 3 (sistema de cultivo) x 2 (doses de cama-de-frango), com quatro repetições, em parcelas de 20 m². Na couve, aplicou-se em cobertura cama-de-frango nas doses 0 e 5,4 t ha-1 (2,7 t ha-1 em duas aplicações) em 2003 e 0 e 2,7 t ha-1 em 2004. Em monocultivo, a produtividade da couve foi de 37,7 e 18,4 t ha-1; consorciada com mucuna-anã, foi de 40,3 e 38,8 t ha-1 e com crotalária spectabilis, de 42,9 e 24,8 t ha-1, em 2003 e 2004, respectivamente. O milho beneficiou-se do efeito residual da adubação com cama-de-frango, aumentando o número de espigas produzidas de 25.625 para 27.916 ha-1. O cultivo de couve em sucessão ao milho, consorciada com leguminosas anuais, sob adubação orgânica com cama-de-frango, resultou em aumento de produtividade das culturas de couve e milho.New farming practices have been developed to reduce the application of fertilizer and pesticides and minimize the aggression to the environment, producing healthy foods and environmentally correct. We evaluated the performance of the succession of collard greens (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala) and corn (Zea mays L.) intercropped with green manure legumes under no-tillage organic system. The study was conducted in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro State, during two years. We utilized dwarf velvet bean (Mucuna deeringiana) and showy crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis) as green manure intercropped with collard greens and in succession sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) and velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) intercropped with corn. As a control, there was a single crop system of corn and collard greens. The experimental design was of randomized complete blocks, a factorial 3 (crop system) x 2 (doses of poultry bed manure), with four replications, in plots of 20 m². For the collard greens we applied 0 and 5.4 t ha-1 of poultry bed manure (2.7 t ha-1 in two applications) in 2003; 0 (zero) and 2.7 t ha-1 in 2004. In the monocrop system, the yield of collard greens was of 37.7 and 18.4 t ha-1, intercropped with dwarf velvet bean the yield reached 40.3 and 38.8 t ha-1 and, using showy crotalaria the yield was of 42.9 and 24.8 t ha-1, in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The corn was benefited from the residual effect of fertilizer with poultry bed manure increasing the production of ears from 25,625 to 27,916 ha-1. Crop succession of collard greens and corn, intercropped with annual legumes under organic fertilization as poultry bed manure, showed yield increase for collard greens and corn.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os efeitos da adubação complementar com o biofertilizante Supermagro, a urina de vaca e a manipueira na produção e nos teores de nutrientes nas folhas da mexeriqueira (Citrus deliciosa Tenore cv. Rio) em sistema de cultivo orgânico. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições. Todas as plantas foram adubadas com esterco bovino e os tratamentos aplicados foram complementares a essa adubação. Foram constituídos dez tratamentos obtidos pelos tipos de adubo e por seu modo de aplicação (via solo, via pulverizações foliares ou ambos) e uma testemunha. A produção foi avaliada nas safras de 2006 e 2007 e os teores de nutrientes nas folhas, em 2005, 2006 e 2007. A adubação complementar não influenciou a produção de frutos. As aplicações de urina de vaca via solo, com ou sem aplicação foliar, e da manipueira, independentemente do modo de aplicação, contribuíram para elevar os teores de S nas folhas. O Supermagro aplicado via solo aumentou os teores de B nas folhas e, quando aplicado via foliar, aumentou os teores de Zn.The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of complementary fertilization with the biofertilizer Supermagro, cow urine and cassava wastewater in the production and levels of nutrients in the leaves of willowleaf mandarim 'Rio' (Citrus deliciosa Tenore) in organic cultivation system. The experimental design used was the randomized blocks, with five replications. All plants were fertilized with cow manure and the applied treatments were complementary to this fertilization. Ten treatments were constituted, by fertilizer types and by modes of application (soil, foliar spray or both) plus a control. The fruits were harvested in 2006 and 2007. The nutrient content in leaves was determined in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The complementary fertilization did not affect the fruit production. However, the cow urine applied on soil, with or without foliar spray, and cassava wastewater, independently of mode of application, increased S contents of leaves. The biofertilizer Supermagro when applied in soil increased B content of leaf, and when it was applied by foliar sprays increased Zn content of leaves.

La variabilidad climática actual se caracteriza por provocar cambios bruscos en los cursos fitoclimáticos, lo que está desencadenando procesos de mortalidad de especies forestales. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la adecuación fitoclimática de las masas artificiales de Pinus sylvestris L. en la Sierra de los Filabres (Almería), para lo cual se analizaron 35 variables fitoclimáticas que determinan la estabilidad climática de la especie. El estudio de los valores interanuales de las variables climáticas indica que entre 1970 y 1980 comenzó una perturbación climática amplia, modificando la estacionalidad y la variabilidad de las precipitaciones y de las temperaturas. Como rasgos más significativos tenemos el aumento de las temperaturas, sobre todo de las máximas, el aumento de la oscilación térmica y de los extremos diarios, la disminución global de precipitación, el aumento grave de la aridez primaveral y el deterioro de todas las variables ómbricas. El estudio de las estaciones con masas repobladas de pino silvestre en Andalucía oriental indica que las estaciones están fuera de la nube de puntos de las masas de pino silvestre establecidas en España. Las masas de pino silvestre de la Sierra de los Filabres están notablemente fuera de estación en todas sus características fitoclimáticas y pueden desaparecer progresiva o bruscamente, sobre todo si se implanta un cambio climático.

El lago Chad es un oasis en medio del desierto. Se trata de un lago tropical cuya cuenca activa se alimenta principalmente de las aguas del río Chari y de su afluente el río Logone. Cerca de cien millones de habitantes viven de sus aguas. Desde hace varias décadas, su población atraviesa una situación de emergencia hídrica y humanitaria que es producto de una combinación de factores. Este artículo busca abordar esta problemática multidimensional desde la perspectiva hidrosocial que focaliza no solamente en las cuestiones ambientales, sino que considera que las crisis hídricas son resultado de las relaciones simbióticas entre el ser humano y la naturaleza. Esta perspectiva político-ecológica supone una estrecha relación entre las transformaciones en el ciclo hidrológico a nivel local, regional y global, de una parte, y las relaciones sociales, políticas, económicas y culturales de poder, de otra. Así considerado, las crisis involucran las estructuras estatales y las decisiones políticas, las geometrías de poder, las relaciones económicas y sociales de sus habitantes, y la relación que se establece entre estos factores y el medio ambiente. Por ello, este estudio no considera la cuestión del lago Chad como el mero resultado de un proceso natural de desertización o de cambio climático influenciado o no por la acción humana. Consideramos en cambio, que esta problemática está atravesada por múltiples variables y actores que interactúan y se influencian entre sí determinando la situación actual de la región, que en este caso, involucra además a cuatro estados africanos. Se utilizará asimismo el concepto de waterscape, entendiendo por ello “una unidad de paisaje”, que es resultado de la interacción entre las sociedades y su ambiente. En su expresión actual, el waterscape del lago Chad muestra una región que sufre desplazamientos humanos constantes debido a los cambios en el régimen de lluvias, la falta de aguas y de pasturas, resultantes de la desertización. A su vez, este movimiento de pueblos provoca conflictos comunales entre ganaderos y agricultores por la posesión y el uso de la tierra. La falta de legislación y de una gestión estatal que contemple una adecuada política de tierras agrava la violencia cotidiana que, por otra parte, también se ve exacerbada por la violencia estatal a la hora de reprimir los enfrentamientos comunales. Desde hace casi dos décadas, la región ha visto la proliferación de diversos grupos armados que encuentran en esta situación una ocasión propicia para desarrollar sus actividades ilícitas vinculadas al crimen organizado. Teniendo en cuenta los lineamientos teóricos que hemos esbozado líneas arriba, en este artículo buscamos analizar la actual crisis del lago Chad como una crisis regional en la que se entremezclan factores ambientales, sociales y políticos. En este sentido, analizaremos la variación del régimen de lluvias y sus repercusiones sobre los estados del lago, los movimientos poblacionales históricos y actuales de las diversas etnias que habitan la región, el rol y las políticas impuestas para con habitantes por parte de los cuatro estados de la cuenca, la violencia estatal, comunal y terrorista que se verifica en la zona, y la vinculación entre estos factores como determinantes de la actual situación de la región.

Se presentan aquí algunos avances del proyecto interdisciplinario de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) sobre “El derecho como instrumento de adaptación al cambio climático”. Se revisa el ejercicio del derecho por medio del análisis de sentencias relativas a conflictos emergentes por inundaciones urbanas catastróficas, intensificadas como consecuencia del cambio climático, en tanto muestra significativa de la aplicación concreta de la normativa, su diversidad y sus ambigüedades. Se analizan estos resultados en el marco de una teoría del riesgo, su vinculación con el andamiaje institucional que plantea el Derecho y su capacidad para reducir o amplificar los efectos negativos de las inundaciones urbanas.

Se analizará la situación de la agricultura y las comunidades rurales de América Latina (A.L.) frente a los cambios climáticos globales. El modelo de desarrollo adoptado por los países Latinoamericanos, basado en la tecnificación y modernización de la agricultura, aumentó la concentración de la tierra y la renta, aumentó los índices de desempleo, generó una grande masa de población rural vulnerable a las coyunturas políticas, económicas y a las variaciones climáticas. Los cambios climáticos incidirán sobre la agricultura de A.L., en especial, sobre los pobres rurales que sentirán con mayor severidad y rapidez dichos efectos. Es necesaria una visión global-integradora, pero con impactos locales, para analizar la situación particular de cada territorio rural y sus sistemas agrícolas y buscar formas de adaptación a estos cambios. A.L. es una región limitada técnica y económicamente para responder a estos nuevos retos. El “Desarrollo Territorial” basado en la valoración y potencialización de los recursos locales, es una alternativa viable para afrontar esta problemática y promover un desarrollo endógeno en cada territorio. El fortalecimiento del capital social y la potenciación de los recursos locales genera territorios armónicos con las características de su agricultura y de su ambiente y con mayor capacidad de enfrentar los cambios climáticos.

A importância fitoterápica e, consequentemente, econômica da Melissa officinalis tem contribuído para expansão do cultivo. O óleo essencial das folhas é formado por constituintes químicos que podem ser largamente empregados na indústria farmacêutica por possuírem atividades antioxidativa, antivirótica e sedativa. Assim sendo, objetivou-se no presente trabalho avaliar o efeito de combinações de doses de adubação orgânica com biofertilizante comercial e esterco bovino no cultivo de Melissa officinalis. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de quatro doses de biofertilizante orgânico (Vitassolo®) e esterco bovino, sendo estes de 0, 30.000, 60.000 e 90.000 L ha-1. Os tratamentos foram arranjados no delineamento experimental blocos casualizados no fatorial 4x4, com 3 repetições. As características avaliadas foram altura de planta, rendimento de folha, teor e rendimento de óleo essencial. As maiores doses de esterco bovino resultaram em um maior desenvolvimento das plantas, em relação às mesmas doses do biofertilizante.The phytotherapic and economic importance of Melissa officinalis has contributed to its cultivation expansion. The essential oil of leaves is composed of chemical constituents, which can be largely employed in the pharmaceutical industry due to their antioxidant, antivirotic and sedative activities. Thus, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of level combination of organic fertilization with commercial biofertilizer and cattle manure on Melissa officinalis cultivation. Treatments constituted of four levels of organic biofertilizer (Vitassolo®) and cattle manure at 0; 30,000; 60,000 and 90,000 L ha-1. Experimental design was in randomized blocks, in split plot 4X4 factorial arrangement, with three replicates. The characteristics evaluated were plant height, leaf yield, essential oil content and yield. The highest cattle manure levels resulted in higher plant development, compared with the same biofertilizer levels.

Mollusk diversity in coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) has been studied extensively, but this is not the case for deep-water habitats. We present the first quantitative characterization of mollusks in shallow and deep waters of the Perdido Fold Belt. The data came from two research cruises completed in 2017. Sediment samples were collected from 56 sites using a 0.25-m2 box corer. We tested hypotheses about spatial patterns of α, β, and γ-diversity of bivalves in two water-depth zones, the continental shelf (43–200 m) and bathyal zone (375–3563 m). A total of 301 bivalves belonging to 39 species were identified. The two zones display similar levels of γ-diversity, but host different bivalve assemblages. In general, α-diversity was higher on the continental shelf, whereas β-diversity was higher in the bathyal zone. These patterns can be explained by the higher input of carbon (energy) to the near-coast shelf zone, as well as by the greater topographic complexity of habitats in the bathyal zone. These results enabled us to propose redirection of sampling efforts for environmental characterization from continental zones to the deep-water zone, especially in the context of environmental assessments during oil and gas exploration and production.

Los modelos matemáticos para predecir biomasa son en la actualidad una opción que facilita y mejora el cálculo de la capacidad de mitigación del cambio climático de un ecosistema, pues generan información fundamental para establecer índices nacionales de almacenamiento de carbono. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la biomasa de los distintos componentes del árbol (hojas, ramas, fuste, raíz) por medio de método destructivo e indirecto para construir modelos predictivos de biomasa y carbono, generados por medio del método de mínimos cuadrados ordinarios, cuyo diámetro normal fue la variable regresora. Las ecuaciones seleccionadas explicaron más del 94 % de la variabilidad observada en biomasa o carbono, con errores de estimados inferiores al 5 %. El fuste aportó el 57.4 % a la biomasa total del árbol y las hojas el 5 %. La fracción de carbono fue muy similar entre los componentes leñosos (ramas-fuste-raíz), variando de 44.9 % a 45.7 % y en las hojas alcanzó el 40.7 %.
