Evaluar el número de fallecimientos por desnutrición en América del Sur, en un periodo correspondiente a los últimos veinte años de información. Materiales y métodos. Se empleó el modelo lineal general, incorporando la prueba de Tukey con base en un nivel de significancia estadístico del 5%. Adicionalmente, se llevó a cabo la técnica multivariada clúster. Resultados. El mayor número de muertes por desnutrición ocurrió en los niños menores de cuatro años y en adultos mayores. El mayor porcentaje de muertes por desnutrición en niños menores de un año se presentó en Venezuela (23,9% mujeres; 25,4% hombres). Chile tiene el menor porcentaje de muertes por desnutrición en menores de un año (0,4% mujeres; 0,5% hombres). Conclusión. A pesar de que los países de América del Sur presentan gran disponibilidad de alimentos, las muertes por hambre siguen siendo prevalentes en parte de la región. Pretendemos analizar la transposición didáctica del tema Ecosistemas y ciclos geoquímicos, en los manuales escolares, en el sistema de enseñanza portugués. Fueron analizados manuales de ciencias naturales, ciencia de la naturaleza, biología, geología y geografía, en el sistema educativo portugués y aun estudios sociales, química, biología, ciencias naturales, geología, geografía y ecología. En lo que se refiere a los manuales, constatamos que los del Tiempo I (1991-2000) se presentan más desarrollados en la presentación de los temas cuando se comparan con los del Tiempo II (2000-2006). En el tema Ecosistemas y ciclos geoquímicos, el abordaje de los manuales es esencialmente ecocéntrico. Sin embargo, nuestros resultados llevan a cuestionar la calidad de los manuales al respecto de este tema, porque no sólo es necesario tratarlo de modo más profundo, sino también se deben incluir en los manuales las competencias en educación ambiental para así poder transmitirlas a las generaciones futuras, y de este modo contribuir a una mejora de la calidad de vida en la Tierra. La comunidad calificó dos especies más alto en el Índice de valor de uso: Oenocarpus bataua (26%) y Attalea allenii (12%). Las mujeres tuvieron mayor participación y aportaron la mayor parte de la información. El propósito de ese modelo de producción tenía entre otros objetivos el incremento de la productividad y la rentabilidad agropecuaria, a partir del uso intensivo de compuestos agroquímicos. Con su aplicación se logró un incremento acelerado en los volúmenes de producción; sin embargo, condujo como consecuencia el deterioro de los recursos naturales, amenazando la sostenibilidad de los sistemas productivos y la salud de la población. Las grandes extensiones dedicadas al cultivo de la caña de azúcar en nuestro país no escaparon a estas transformaciones; la gran cantidad de nutrientes demandados y las bajas reposiciones de nutrientes por fertilización traen como consecuencia una marcada disminución de la fertilidad en la mayoría de los suelos dedicados al cultivo de la poácea. El déficit nutricional para los cultivos debe ser compensado a través de la fertilización para intentar alcanzar la sostenibilidad y competitividad del sistema productivo. Dentro de las alternativas, se ha trabajado en las últimas décadas, en la obtención de fitoestimulantes que se caracterizan por incrementar el crecimiento y la productividad de los cultivos. Sobre la base de los antecedentes mencionados se decidió proponer una nueva alternativa para la fertilización del cultivo de la caña de azúcar bajo los principios del manejo sostenible de tierras.
