El carbonero común y el herrerillo común son especies que se utilizan tradicionalmente como modelo en los estudios sobre competencia trófica. No obstante, la mayoría de los estudios sobre este tema se han llevado a cabo en localidades en las que las orugas son, con diferencia, la presa que más se aporta a los pollos. Sin embargo, en los bosques mixtos mediterráneos la abundancia de orugas es relativamente escasa y son las arañas el elemento fundamental de la alimentación del carbonero común, al menos para los pollos. El objetivo del presente artículo es estudiar el aporte de alimentos al nido para establecer el grado de solapamiento de la dieta entre estas dos especies de paros en un bosque mediterráneo. Nuestros resultados mostraron que la tasa de alimentación del herrerillo común es superior a la del carbonero común, probablemente para compensar el hecho de que las presas que el herrerillo lleva a los pollos son de menor tamaño. El herrerillo común aportó más arañas que el carbonero, pese a que el carbonero gris llevó presas de mayor tamaño y más cantidad de orugas. Ello se debe a que el carbonero común puede cazar presas más grandes que el herrerillo. El principal resultado de este estudio respalda la hipótesis de la división de recursos entre el carbonero común y el herrerillo común en un ecosistema forestal mediterráneo esclerófilo. Dada la importancia ecológica y económica de esta especie, se debe dar prioridad a las medidas de gestión destinadas a limitar los efectos de esta enfermedad. Sin embargo, a pesar del gran número de estudios que existen sobre la sarna sarcóptica en la cabra montés, actualmente no hay ningún protocolo de actuación común para el manejo de esta enfermedad sobre el terreno. La ausencia de protocolos nacionales e internacionales destinados a controlar la sarna sarcóptica ha favorecido la aparición espontánea de diversas iniciativas de gestión en España. Sin embargo, existe muy poca información sobre esta tendencia y la que hay solo suele estar disponible en la literatura gris o en la memoria de los observadores locales. Algunas de las estrategias tradicionales diseñadas para combatir esta enfermedad son la administración de piensos medicados y el sacrificio generalizado de los animales afectados. En este trabajo, proponemos un enfoque de gestión que tenga en cuenta aspectos relacionados con la ecología y la conservación de la cabra montés, además de factores relacionados con la salud pública. Nuestras recomendaciones se basan en el conocimiento de la enfermedad y la interacción entre el parásito y el hospedador y tienen por objeto impulsar progresos a largo plazo en su control. Además, analizamos la eficacia de las medidas utilizadas tradicionalmente en el manejo de la enfermedad. El objetivo general es fomentar el debate entre los gestores de fauna silvestre y motivar la elaboración de estrategias de gestión alternativas. Este artículo muestra cómo la ecología de tales poblaciones permite abordar y proponer hipótesis para explicar el papel de la competencia bacteriana por C y N en las transformaciones del N, en particular la nitrificación. Se proponen dos modelos: el primero explica cómo la competencia intraespecífica por C, realizada por microorganismos heterótrofos, determina la disponibilidad de N para las bacterias quimiolitotróficas o nitrificantes; y el segundo explica la competencia interespecífica entre poblaciones de bacterias nitrificantes que no compiten con las heterótrofas por el C disponible, pero si por el amonio. Las hipótesis se basan en el modelo de competencia de Lotka-Volterra para explicar cómo ambos tipos de competencia determinan la dominancia de las bacterias nitrificantes sobre las heterótrofas, lo que podría relacionarse con las elevadas tasas de nitrificación en los suelos tropicales. Finalmente, se señalan las perspectivas y limitaciones del modelo conceptual hipotético propuesto para entender los procesos que regulan la disponibilidad del N en el suelo.
