                <text>Durante cinco años se desarrollaron trabajos de campo contenidos dentro del Manejo Sostenible de Tierras (MST) en una finca ganadera de la zona pre montañosa de la provincia de Cienfuegos, la cual está ubicada sobre suelos Pardos Grisáceos. El presente trabajo demostró que con el MST en la aplicación de medidas sencillas de conservación y mejoramiento del suelo tales como: laboreo mínimo, siembra en contorno, canales terrazas y el uso de policultivos se evitó la pérdida de 10.2 t/ha de suelo y se retuvieron como promedio 168, 294 y 295 kg/ha de P2O5, K2O y MO respectivamente. Se mejoró la fertilidad del suelo al incrementarse ligeramente los contenidos de M. O, P2O5, K2O manteniéndose el pH en los rangos iníciales e incrementó el rendimiento de yuca, maíz, tomate, fríjol y boniato en un 20-36 %. El uso de policultivos indicó que 1 hectárea de yuca y frijol sembrados juntos producen en total los mismos que 1.83 ha de yuca y frijol por separado. Mientras que las asociaciones gramíneas-leguminosas en áreas forrajeras propiciaron incrementos de la producción de pastos y proteína bruta y la sustitución de la fertilización nitrogenada de 150kg/ha/año.</text>

Os dilemas foram elaborados com base na teoria de julgamento moral de Kohlberg e na técnica de discussão de dilemas morais em grupo, criada por Blatt e Kohlberg. Dezesseis estudantes do primeiro ano do segundo grau de uma escola pública de Porto Alegre participaram do estudo, tendo sido aplicado nesses estudantes, como pré-teste e pós-teste, um questionário de dez itens sobre atitudes em relação à ecologia. As respostas dos participantes foram avaliadas numa escala de zero a dois pontos, indicando o grau de maturidade de atitudes em relação ao ambiente. O grau de participação nas discussões de dilemas também foi analisado. A análise dos dados indica que a técnica foi eficaz somente para os alunos considerados participativos nas discussões.This research study had the purpose of promoting favorable attitudes toward the environment in adolescents through debates of dilemmas with ecological content. The dilemmas were elaborated with basis on Kohlberg's theory of moral judgment and on Blatt and Kohlberg's group discussion technique. Sixteen students from the first year of high-school from a public school in Porto Alegre (Brazil), participated in the research study. These students were administred a ten-item questionnaire about attitudes regarding ecology, as pre-test and post-test. The participants responses were rated in a zero to two points scale, indicating the degree of maturity of attitudes regarding the environment. The degree of participation in the discussions was also analyzed. The analysis of data reveals that the technique worked only for those students considered high in participation in the discussions.</text>

                <text>ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the reproductive biology of populations of Thamnodynastes hypoconia in subtemperate wetlands based on macroscopic analyses of their gonads. We analyzed 101 specimens from the southernmost regions of Brazil. The males had a greater snout-vent length, but the females reached sexual maturity with a greater body size. The reproductive cycle of the females was seasonal, with secondary vitellogenesis occurring between the winter and spring (May-October). Based on macroscopic analysis of gonads, data suggests that males have a continuous reproductive cycle. Parturition occurs between the late summer and early fall (January-April). The clutch size ranged between 4 and 16 embryos and showed no relationship with the female's body size. The recorded reproductive frequency of T. hypoconia is low (38 %) compared to other phylogenetically related species. Conversely, the studied populations appear to have a high reproductive success because it is an abundant species in the study site.</text>

                <text>Cronobacter spp. are bacterial pathogens that cause neonatal meningitis, septicemia, and necrotizing enterocolitis in infants with a lethality rate of 40–80%. Powdered infant formulas (PIF) have been implicated as the main vehicles of transmission. This pathogen can also cause infection through contaminated expressed breast milk, and it has been recovered from neonatal feeding tubes of neonates not fed reconstituted PIF and milk kitchen areas. This study analyzed antibiotic resistance profiles and the tissue virulence tests of Cronobacter sakazakii and Enterobacter spp. recovered from PIF, infant fecal matter‘s, and milk kitchen environment involved in a diarrheic hemorrhagic outbreak in 2011 in Mexico. The strains isolated from the outbreak had similar antibiotic resistance profiles and pathogenicity irrespective of isolation site, however, C. sakazakii strains isolated from PIF showed significantly higher invasive profiles than Enterobacter spp. (p = 0.001) and 83% were resistant to more than one antibiotic. The findings of this study can be used to complement existing information to better control Cronobacter and Enterobacter spp. contamination in PIF production, prevent its transmission, and improve infant food safety.</text>

                <text>Introducción. En los últimos años el área y la producción de café ha incrementado en Nariño, pero su sostenibilidad y rentabilidad se afectó por diversos factores. El aprovechamiento de atributos de calidad podría ser una alternativa para mejorar la actividad económica. Objetivo. Analizar la incidencia del manejo agronómico del sistema productivo de café variedad Castillo, sobre el rendimiento y la calidad del grano en el departamento de Nariño. Materiales y métodos. El trabajo se desarrolló durante 2018-2019 en cuatro municipios del departamento de Nariño, Colombia. Con sesenta unidades productivas (UPC) con café variedad Castillo. Se diseñó un instrumento mixto para la captura de información en predios y de variables in situ sobre el rendimiento y la calidad, con protocolos de la Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) y la Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC). Resultados. El 41,6 % de las UPC tenían predios sobre 1700 msnm, el 46,6 % se asoció con especies forestales, el 33,3 % con frutales o musáceas y el 20 % a libre exposición. El histograma de valores propios, permitió seleccionar cinco factores que explicaron el 52,69 % de variabilidad, las variables contribuyentes se relacionaron con: tipo de fertilizante, frecuencia, dosis de abono orgánico y densidad. El análisis de clasificación permitió conformar cuatro grupos, el cuarto con mayor número de UPC (35) pertenecía a la zona occidente, empleaba densidades de siembra &gt;5500 plantas/hectárea y combinaba fertilizantes químicos y orgánicos. Conclusiones. Los sistemas mixtos con café bajo sombrío prevalecieron en su mayoría para el sistema productivo estudiado, de tal manera que no derivaron en composición de grupos diferenciales, como si hubo con la variabilidad en densidades de siembra, uso de abono orgánico y fraccionamiento de la fertilización. Estas variables de manejo agronómico influyeron en la obtención de diferencias para el rendimiento y la calidad de grano comercializable.</text>

                <text>MIL-53(Fe) is a metal organic framework that has been recently considered a heterogeneous photocatalyst candidate for the degradation of water pollutants under visible or solar radiation, though stability studies are rather scarce in the literature. In this work, MIL-53(Fe) was successfully synthesized by a solvothermal method and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherm, Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), elemental analysis and wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF). The effects of pH, temperature, solar radiation and the presence of oxidants (i.e., electron acceptors) such as ozone, persulfate and hydrogen peroxide on the stability of MIL-53(Fe) in water were investigated. The as-synthetized MIL-53(Fe) exhibited relatively good stability in water at pH 4 but suffered fast hydrolysis at alkaline conditions. At pH 4–5, temperature, radiation (solar and visible radiation) and oxidants exerted negative effect on the stability of the metal–organic framework (MOF) in water, resulting in non-negligible amounts of metal (iron) and linker (terephthalic acid, H2BDC) leached out from MIL-53(Fe). The photocatalytic activity of MIL-53(Fe) under simulated solar radiation was studied using phenol and metoprolol as target pollutants. MIL-53(Fe) on its own removed less than 10% of the pollutants after 3 h of irradiation, while in the presence of ozone, persulfate or hydrogen peroxide, complete elimination of pollutants was achieved within 2 h of exposure to radiation. However, the presence of oxidants and the formation of some reaction intermediates (e.g., short-chain carboxylic acids) accelerated MIL-53(Fe) decarboxylation. The findings of this work suggest that MIL-53(Fe) should not be recommended as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for water treatment before carrying out a careful evaluation of its stability under actual reaction conditions.</text>

                <text>In this paper we review functional and evolutionary relationships among mating systems of caridean shrimp and specific traits such as general biology/ecology, sexual systems, behavior and morphology. Four mating systems are described based on reports from available literature, and a fifth system is recognized but published information is insufficient to describe it in detail. `Monogamy' occurs in many species inhabiting monopolizable refuges or hosts, especially when environmental conditions restrict the probability of intraspecific interactions. In contrast, free-living species experience higher encounter rates and males can dominate or search. In `neighborhoods of dominance' mating systems, large males have higher reproductive success since they perform better in fights for receptive females. In `pure searching' mating systems, small and agile males do better because they search more efficiently for mates within the population. The fourth mating system is `search &amp; attend' occurring in solitary symbionts, which experience variable ecological and demographic environments: depending on environmental conditions and ontogenetic stages it may either be profitable for males to search or to attend hosts with sexually attractive females. Sexual systems of caridean shrimp are characterized by their high diversity and intraspecific plasticity, including gonochorism and different forms of protandric or simultaneous hermaphroditism. The identified mating systems partially explained this diversity: In monogamous species, low encounter rates and lack of sexual dimorphism favors simultaneous hermaphroditism but gonochory usually occurs among these species probably because mates are not strictly faithful. Species with neighborhoods of dominance mating are gonochoristic because both sexes benefit from being large. Pure searching species have a wide opportunity for the evolution of protandry since small males benefit while the opposite is true for females. In species with search &amp; attend the situation is variable, and only some males benefit by acquiring large size while others do better by searching or changing sex. In contrast to other crustaceans free-living shrimp do not exhibit precopulatory mate guarding and they are relatively unaggressive. The characteristic and efficient escape behavior of shrimp using their contractile abdomen might be one important trait that has constrained the evolution of such behaviors. Los sistemas sexuales de los carideos se caracterizan por su diversidad y plasticidad intraespecífica, habiendo especies gonocóricas, otras con diferentes formas de hermafroditismo protándrico e incluso hermafroditas simultáneas. Los sistemas de apareamiento identificados parcialmente explican esta diversidad: en especies monogamas las bajas tasas de encuentro y la falta de dimorfismo sexual, favorecen el hermafroditismo simultáneo pero la gonocoría normalmente domina posiblemente porque las parejas no son estrictamente fieles. Especies con dominancia vecinal son gonocóricas porque ambos sexos se benefician con ser grandes. Las especies con pura búsqueda tienen una amplia oportunidad para la evolución de protandría ya que los más beneficiados son los machos pequeños y las hembras grandes. En especies con búsqueda &amp; compañía la situación es variable, solo algunos machos se benefician al ser suficientemente grandes, mientras que otros lo hacen mejor buscando o cambiando de sexo. En comparación con otros crustáceos, los camarones de vida libre se caracterizan por la ausencia de custodia precopulatoria e infrecuentes conductas agresivas. La eficiente y característica conducta de escape de los camarones usando su abdomen contractil podría ser un importante impedimento para la evolución de tales conductas.                 <text>Un material radiactivo es toda sustancia o átomo que emite radiaciones ionizantes y no ionizantes; la radiactividad puede ser natural, artificial o inducida. La radiactividad se utiliza en el mundo en ramas de la ciencia como ecología, medicina, agricultura, industria, biología y química. En Costa Rica se usan materiales radiactivos en campos de aplicación industrial, médica y universitaria. Las fuentes radiactivas van desde las de muy baja radiactividad hasta las de muy alta actividad, por ejemplo, Am241 y Ra226, utilizadas en centros universitarios costarricenses. No obstante, si los materiales radiactivos no se manipulan correctamente, pueden tener efectos negativos en la salud y el medio ambiente, por lo tanto es necesario tomar medidas preventivas y protectoras. Costa Rica regula el uso de materiales radiactivos mediante el Decreto Ejecutivo Nº 24037-S., sin embargo, no existe formalmente un plan nacional de manejo y eso limita su gestión en las instituciones donde se utilizan y por ende el tratamiento y disposición final de los residuos. El presente trabajo de investigación analiza la gestión en materiales radiactivos que realiza el Laboratorio de Isotopos y Protección Radiológica de la Universidad de Tübingen, Alemania, mediante la determinación y análisis de diferentes acciones y datos relacionados con 1) aspectos administrativos (manuales, protocolos, normativas) y 2) aspectos técnico-operativos (control de la contaminación, infraestructura, equipos y materiales de seguridad, tratamiento de residuos). La información se recopiló y analizó mediante herramientas como cuestionarios, listas de chequeo, entrevistas, visitas de inspección, sesiones de trabajo y revisión de documentos.</text>
