La raya guitarra Rhinobatos leucorhynchus es comúnmente capturada como fauna acompañante en la pesca del camarón de aguas someras del Pacífico colombiano, tanto a nivel industrial como artesanal. A partir de 286 ejemplares capturados incidentalmente entre 2001 y 2007, se estudiaron diferentes aspectos biológicos de esta especie. Las hembras fueron proporcionalmente más grandes que los machos, aunque el crecimiento fue similar en ambos sexos (alométrico). Los embriones no presentaron diferencias sexuales significativas ni en talla ni en peso. La proporción sexual en adultos fue 2,4:1 (hembras-machos), mientras que en embriones esta proporción fue de 1:1. El 51,5% de machos presentó claspers desarrollados y calcificados y el 56,5% de las hembras estaban grávidas, presentando fecundidades entre 1 y 6 embriones, con tallas entre 3 y 19,5 cm, sugiriendo una talla de nacimiento entre 19 y 19,5 cm LT. La talla mediana de madurez de las hembras fue menor que la de machos (48,48 cm y 51,18 cm LT, respectivamente), y las hembras presentaron crías a partir de 44 cm LT. Los hábitos alimentarios de esta especie mostraron 30 ítems presa, con camarones de la familia Penaeidae, y especialmente Trachypenaeus sp. como alimento principal. La raya guitarra presentó diferencias significativas en la dieta de machos y hembras, y la amplitud de nicho indicó que es especialista en su dieta. Los resultados de este estudio aportan información útil para plantear medidas de manejo de R. leucorhynchus, especie que requiere atención, dado sus características biológicas y su importancia comercial y de consumo.The guitar ray Rhinobatos leucorhynchus is commonly caught as by-catch of industrial and artisanal shrimp trawling in the shallow waters of the Colombian Pacific. The biological aspects of this species were studied using 286 animals caught as by-catch between 2001 and 2007. The females were proportionally larger than males, although growth was similar (allometric) for both sexes. The embryos showed no significant differences by sex in either size or weight. The adult sex ratio was 2.4:1 (females-males), whereas in embryos this ratio was 1:1. 51.5% of males, 51.5% had developed, calcified claspers, and 56.5% of females were pregnant, carrying between 1 and 6 embryos of 3 to 19.5 cm, suggesting a size at birth of 19 to 19.5 cm TL. The median size at maturity for females was lower than that of males (48.48 cm and 51.18 cm TL, respectively), and the females had embryos starting at 44 cm TL. The feeding habits of this species showed 30 prey items, with shrimp from the Penaeidae family and especially Trachypenaeus sp. as main food. The diets of male and female guitar rays differed significantly, and the niche breadth indicated that this species has a specialist diet. The results of this study provide useful information for proposing management measures for R. leucorhynchus, a species that requires attention given its biological characteristics and its importance in terms of commerce and human consumption.

Land use change is one of the main biodiversity threats. Due to this change, natural habitats such as the South American temperate rainforests have been rapidly degraded, fragmented, and lost. Consequently, the management and conservation of the remaining forest is a priority and having an appropriate environmental policy is mandatory for this purpose. Conservation actions in the temperate rainforest have been addressed from an individual species perspective, giving less attention to the ecosystem level conservation. Moreover, conservation-related information has not reflected yet on environmental policy development. We used the case study of the monito del monte (Dromiciops gliroides) to illustrate how our current ecological and conservation knowledge of a species could be used to generate a new environmental policy. Dromiciops gliroides is a forest-dependent species with an important ecological role and quite unique evolutionary status. In order to guarantee the persistence of D. gliroides, we propose two habitat management components to be incorporated in management plans: structure and connectivity. Structure refers to spatial arrangement and key structural elements that determine habitat quality and connectivity refers to functional connectivity at the landscape level. The conservation of the monito del monte might also contribute to the conservation of many other forest-dependent species. By conserving such species it will be possible to conserve the ecological interactions and the eco-evolutionary processes, which ultimately determine the conservation of the temperate rainforest.El cambio de uso de la tierra es una de las principales amenazas a la biodiversidad. Hábitats naturales como el bosque templado lluvioso de Sudamérica han sido degradados, fragmentados y eliminados rápidamente. En consecuencia, es prioritario el manejo y conservación de los remanentes, para lo que es necesario contar con una política ambiental acorde. Las acciones de conservación referentes al bosque lluvioso templado se han abordado mayormente desde una perspectiva de especies individuales, con poco énfasis en la conservación a nivel de ecosistema. Más aún, la información generada en este ámbito tampoco ha permeado en el desarrollo de políticas ambientales. Utilizamos el estudio de caso del monito del monte (Dromiciops gliroides) para ilustrar cómo el conocimiento actual en ecología y conservación de una especie puede ser utilizado para generar una nueva política ambiental. Dromiciops gliroides es una especie dependiente del bosque, con un importante rol ecológico y un gran interés evolutivo y de conservación. Para garantizar su persistencia, proponemos dos componentes de gestión del hábitat, a incorporarse en los planes de manejo: la estructura y la conectividad. La estructura hace referencia al arreglo espacial y la presencia de elementos estructurales clave que influyen en la calidad del hábitat, mientras que conectividad se refiere a la conectividad funcional del paisaje. Conservando al monito del monte, se conservarían también otras especies dependientes del bosque y así las interacciones ecológicas y los procesos ecoevolutivos, que determinan finalmente la conservación del bosque lluvioso templado.

Balance between energy acquisition and expense is critical for the survival and reproductive success of organisms. Energy budgets may be limited by environmental factors as well as by animal design. These restrictions may be especially important for small endotherms such as hummingbirds, which have exceedingly high energy demands. Many nectar-feeding bird species decrease food intake when sugar concentration in food is increased. This feeding response can be explained by two alternative hypotheses: compensatory feeding and physiological constraint. The compensatory feeding hypothesis predicts that if birds vary intake to maintain a constant energy intake to match energy expenditures, then they should increase intake when expenditures are increased. Broad-tailed hummingbirds (Selasphorus platycercus) and Green-backed fire crown hummingbirds (Sephanoides sephaniodes) were presented with diets varying in energy density and exposed to various environmental temperatures. Birds decreased volumetric food intake in response to sugar concentration. However, when they were exposed to lower environmental temperatures, and hence increased thermoregulatory demands, they did not increase their rate of energy consumption and lost mass. These results support the existence of a physiological constraint to the energy budgets of hummingbirds. Digestive and peripheral organ function limitations may impose severe challenges to the energy budgets of these small endotherms, and therefore play a significant role in determining their distribution, ecology, and natural history.El balance entre la adquisición y el uso de energía es crítico para la reproducción y sobrevivencia. Los presupuestos energéticos de los organismos pueden estar limitados tanto por factores ambientales como por su fisiología. Estas restricciones pueden ser especialmente importantes para pequeños endotérmos como los colibríes (picaflores) que tienen costos energéticos altos por unidad de masa. Muchas especies de aves nectarívoras reducen el consumo de alimento cuando la concentración de azúcar aumenta. Esta respuesta puede ser explicada por dos hipótesis alternativas: compensación alimenticia y restricciones fisiológicas. La primera hipótesis predice que las aves varían el consumo para mantener la ingesta de alimento ajustada a sus gastos energéticos. Por ende, cuando los gastos energéticos aumentan, el consumo debe aumentar. Colibríes vibradores (Selasphorus platycercus) y picaflores (Sephanoides sephaniodes) fueron alimentados con dietas de contenido energético variable y expuestos a varias temperaturas ambientales. Las aves redujeron el volumen consumido en respuesta a un incremento en la concentración de azúcar. Marx proposed that capitalism’s destructive force is caused, at root, by the alienation of labor value from its generators. Environmentalists have added the concept of unalienated ecological value, and rights activists added the unalienated expressive value of free speech, sexuality, spirituality, etc. Marx’s vision for restoring an unalienated world by top-down economic governance was never fulfilled. But in the last 30 years, new forms of social justice have emerged that operate as “bottom-up”. El objeto de estudio es analizar y comparar cómo responden regantes y abastecimientos a situaciones de sequía en el Sureste de España en el siglo XXI, con el ejemplo de las de 2005-2008 y 2017-2018. Metodológicamente es un estudio de geografía regional con análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo, diacrónico y comparado, y trabajo de campo. Entre las fuentes utilizadas sobresalen la consulta de archivos históricos, los datos de AEMET, los consumos de agua en abastecimientos y regadíos, y las entrevistas a gestores y usuarios. La respuesta ante las sequías del siglo XXI ha sido dispar. En la de 2005-2008, en el regadío hubo que reducir la superficie de arbolado; en abastecimientos, se recurrió a pozos de sequía y cesiones de derechos. En la de 2017-2018, se han aplicado nuevas tecnologías en sistemas de riego y de cultivo, aparte de algunos aportes de desalinización; en el caso de los abastecimientos, se ha completado la oferta con agua producto de la desalación. La gestión del agua se enfrenta al reto de escenarios de cambio climático en el que serán más frecuentes sucesos extremos como sequías e inundaciones que generarán dificultades (fallo de garantía de suministro) para satisfacer las demandas hídrica y alimentaria de una población creciente.

La urbanización global y masiva de los territorios es el más importante fenómeno ecológico de la actualidad. Los estándares de crecimiento urbano son determinantes para la conservación de la diversidad biológica, y asimismo para el grado de calidad de vida aceptable de las poblaciones urbanas. Contrariamente a la percepción de los biólogos y de otros académicos, de las ciudades como ambientes estériles y opuestos a la naturaleza, el reciente desarrollo de la ecología urbana, ciencia necesariamente interdisciplinaria, nos demuestra que ciudades son ecosistemas heterotróficos que necesitan ser planeados para que sus impactos en la biosfera sean disminuidos, y que en paralelo su capacidad de sostener la biodiversidad sea incrementada.
