As coletas ocorreram em três pontos, no período chuvoso (maio a julho/2002) e estiagem (outubro a dezembro/2002). As amostras do plâncton foram obtidas através de arrastos horizontais superficiais, com rede de abertura de malha de 64¼m. Foram registrados in situ dados sobre temperatura e transparência e, concomitantemente, coletadas amostras de água utilizando a garrafa tipo Kitahara para a análise de salinidade, pH, oxigênio dissolvido, sais nutrientes e biomassa. Foram identificados 204 táxons predominando o grupo das diatomáceas (75%), destacando-se como dominantes Chaetoceros costatus Pavillard, Chaetoceros curvisetus Cleve, Chaetoceros sp., Coscinodiscus centralis Ehrenberg, seguidas dos dinoflagelados (10,79%), cianofíceas (6,37%), clorofíceas (3,92%), euglenofíceas (3,43%) e silicoflagelados (0,49%). As concentrações de oxigênio demonstraram uma alta capacidade de renovação do ambiente devido ao aporte de águas marinhas; maiores concentrações de nutrientes e biomassa algácea ocorreram durante o período chuvoso e nas baixa-mares. A pluviometria e o aporte marinho foram os parâmetros que mais influenciaram na hidrologia e na distribuição da comunidade fitoplanctônica com reflexo na riqueza taxonômica.This work aimed to evaluate spatial and temporal variations of the microphytoplankton and environmental variables in the Formoso River estuary, southern coast of Pernambuco state. The samples were collected at three stations, in the rainy season (May to July/2002) and dry season (October to December/2002). The plankton samples were obtained through horizontal superficial hauls, with a 64ìm-mesh net. Temperature and transparency were recorded in situ and, at the same time, water samples were collected using a Kitahara bottle to analyze salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and biomass. A total of 204 taxa were identified with the diatom group (75%) ranking first; dominant species were Chaetoceros costatus Pavillard, Chaetoceros curvisetus Cleve, Chaetoceros sp., Coscinodiscus centralis Ehrenberg, followed by the dinoflagellates (10.79%), cyanophycea (6.37%), chlorophycea (3.92%), euglenophycea (3.43%) and silicoflagellates (0.49%). Anderson Description An account of the resource Existe una preocupación acerca de que la presión que ejercen las instituciones académicas por aumentar el número de publicaciones en revistas de factor de impacto elevado podría ir en desmedro de la calidad y, en consecuencia, de la incidencia que los trabajos puedan tener en la comunidad científica internacional. Para poner a prueba esta hipótesis, en este trabajo realizamos un análisis epistemométrico y estadístico de los trabajos publicados entre 1975 y 2015 por ecólogos que trabajan en instituciones argentinas, brasileras, chilenas y mexicanas. Se registraron los valores para el índice-h (que mide la cantidad de artículos publicados y sus citas) como indicador de calidad científica, y el total de ítems publicados en las revistas que ocuparon los 10 primeros lugares de cada país como indicador de productividad científica. Si bien el número de publicaciones creció de forma exponencial en estos cuatro países, desde el 2000 se observa que el número de citaciones por artículo disminuyó marcadamente. Es decir, fomentar la productividad científica mediante el incentivo de aumentar el número de publicaciones en revistas de alto factor de impacto, la política científica reinante en los países latinoamericanos, no refleja necesariamente una mayor inserción de la ecología latinoamericana en la comunidad científica internacional, sino más bien que las actuales políticas científicas de estos países produjeron lo contrario. Publicar menos trabajos, pero de mayor calidad y profundidad, o bien dedicarnos a fortalecer un sistema científico y tecnológico que se vincule a las demandas locales y regionales (y evaluar los productos acorde a esta meta) parecen ser caminos alternativos, pero más sabios, para construir una ecología regional con más impacto, relevancia, pertenencia y visibilidad globales. The lack of information on the effect of long-term crop rotations on soil chemical-physical properties for volcanic soils in Chile could restrict reaping real benefits, and make it difficult to take agricultural management decisions, which could lead to possible negative consequences on some soil chemical-physical properties and the environment. The development of information associated with the effect on soil chemical-physical properties with respect to long-term rotation systems and their fertilization management contribute to improving agronomic management decisions for these soils. A study was carried out to assess the effect of six rotation systems replicating fertilization management used by farmers, especially N and P application, and eventually low rates of K, Ca and Mg on soil chemical properties in a volcanic soil after 7 yr in Central South Chile. Affected chemical properties were pH, inorganic N, and available K, along with a general decrease of pH related to fertilization used, which was insufficient in Ca, K, and Mg. Moreover, this soil exhibited high P adsorption capacity (90.2 to 97.5%). Hence, crop rotations that included pasture legumes and crops with high nutrient inputs such as sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) generated a less negative effect on soil chemical properties. This study indicates that fertilization management in crop rotation systems must consider the input and output nutrient balances to prevent the negative effect on some soil chemical properties.Los sistemas de rotación de cultivos de largo plazo pueden tener varios beneficios sobre las propiedades físico-químicas del suelo y productividad de los cultivos. La falta de información sobre el efecto de rotaciones de largo plazo en las propiedades físico-químicas para suelos volcánicos en Chile podría limitar la obtención de beneficios reales, dificultando decisiones de manejo agrícola, con posibles consecuencias negativas en las propiedades físico-químicas del suelo y el ambiente. El desarrollo de información asociada a efectos en las propiedades físico-químicas del suelo en relación al uso de diferentes sistemas de rotaciones de largo plazo y sus manejos de fertilización, podrían contribuir a mejorar las decisiones de manejo agronómico en estos suelos. Se realizó un estudio que evaluó el efecto de seis rotaciones de cultivo que representan el manejo de fertilización utilizado por agricultores, que enfatiza la aplicación de N y P y eventualmente baja dosis de K, Ca y Mg, sobre las propiedades químicas de un suelo volcánico del centro-sur de Chile después de 7 años. Las propiedades químicas afectadas fueron pH, N inorgánico y K disponible, con una disminución general del pH relacionada con la fertilización usada, insuficiente en Ca, K y Mg. A su vez este suelo presentó una alta capacidad de adsorción de P (90,2-97,5%). Consecuentemente, las rotaciones de cultivo que incluyeron leguminosas forrajeras y cultivos con altos ingresos de nutrientes como remolacha generaron un efecto menos negativo en las propiedades químicas del suelo. Para prevenir efectos negativos sobre las propiedades químicas del suelo como lo indicado en este estudio, el manejo de fertilización en sistemas de rotaciones de cultivos debería considerar balances de entrada y salida de nutrientes. En sus 30 años de existencia, LTER ha expandido su rango geográfico (actualmente la red Internacional de LTER tiene más de 40 países miembros con sitios de estudios en cada uno de los continentes) y focos disciplinarios (principalmente abarcando las ciencias naturales y sociales, llevando a algunos a pedir un cambio de nombre a estudios de investigación socioecológica de largo plazo - LTSER por su sigla en inglés). No obstante, los biomas templados y subantárticos del sur de Sudamérica han carecido de sitios y redes formales de investigación a largo plazo. Sin embargo, numerosos esfuerzos de investigación a largo plazo han existido en Chile y Argentina sin coordinación entre sí. Particularmente, en 2008, el Instituto de Ecología y Biodiversidad puso en marcha el primer esfuerzo sistemático para articular tres sitios existentes (Parque Nacional Fray Jorge - 33° S, Estación Biológica Senda Darwin - 43° S, y Parque Etnobotánico Omora - 55° S). Aquí presentamos un número especial de la Revista Chilena de Historia Natural, dedicado a LTSER, con el objetivo de 1) dar una síntesis de algunos de los casos más emblemáticos casos de investigación socioecológica a largo plazo en Chile; 2) demostrar el valor de estos esfuerzos para la integración de la investigación y educación con resultados y procesos sociales, tales como aquellos relacionados con la toma de decisiones; y 3) ofrecer la perspectiva de una amplia gama de participantes involucrados en estas iniciativas, incluyendo a estudiantes de postgrado y programas asociados desde Iberoamérica y Norteamérica. Es nuestro deseo que estos trabajos compilados contribuyan a la consolidación de la aproximación de LTSER en el sur de Sudamérica dentro de la comunidad académica y también para una mayor integración entre la academia y la sociedad.Since their formal inception in 1980, long-term ecological research (LTER) programs have served as a successful organizing framework to create research agendas and funding mechanisms that allow scientists to address meaningful ecological phenomena at the scales they occur. In its 30 years of existence, LTER has expanded its geographic range (currently the International LTER network has more than 40 country members with sites on every continent) and disciplinary foci (principally encompassing the natural and social sciences and leading some to call for a name change to long-term socio-ecological research - LTSER). Nonetheless, the temperate and subantarctic biomes of southern South America have lacked formalized long-term research sites and networks. Yet, at the same time, numerous uncoordinated long-term research efforts exist in both Chile and Argentina, and in 2008, the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity launched Chile’s first concerted effort to link three existing sites (Fray Jorge Forest National Park - 33° S, Senda Darwin Biological Station - 43° S, and Omora Ethnobotanical Park - 55° S). Here, we present a special feature of the Revista Chilena de Historia Natural, dedicated to LTSER, with the aim of 1) providing a synthesis of some of the most emblematic cases of long-term socio-ecological research in Chile; 2) demonstrating the value of these efforts for the integration of research, education and social outcomes, such as decision making; and 3) offering the perspective of a broad array of participants involved in these initiatives, including graduate students and associated programs from Ibero-America and North America. It is our hope that these compiled works will contribute to the consolidation of the LTSER approach in southern South America both within the academic community and also to better link academia and society.
