Mathematics teachers play an essential role in ensuring citizens’ statistical and probabilistic literacy. This study aimed at analyzing the pedagogical content knowledge that teachers utilized to teach statistics and probability through considering contextualized situations. In order to accomplish this purpose, fourteen secondary mathematics teachers participated in a formative and evaluative activity that was designed using the transformational professional competence model. During each evaluative phase, a group discussion was conducted. Participants were asked to reflect on their actions when promoting statistical and probabilistic literacy by considering a range of topics (data science, didactic resources, and methodological approaches) that were addressed during the training phase. A mixed, quantitative–qualitative methodological design was used for the data collection and analysis, which involved open-ended, multiple-choice, or scale-type questions that were moderated by the Metaplan® approach and the Mentimeter® software. The main ideas that emerged from the results indicated the need to reinforce the use of real data, technological resources to handle the visualization of information, the elaboration of different types of graphs besides the classical ones, and the formulation of hypotheses. The initial diagnosis will continue within a research and practice community made up of teachers and researchers. Therefore, a working proposal based on examples and models contextualized within the COVID-19 crisis is presented in order to enhance secondary mathematics teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge. Public safety net healthcare systems play a critical role in facilitating access to care for refugees and informing coordinated public health prevention and mitigation efforts during a pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence ratios of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection between refugee women and nonrefugee parturient patients admitted to the hospital for delivery. Here, we suspected that the burden of infection was disproportionately distributed across refugee communities that may act as sentinels for community outbreaks. A cross-sectional study was conducted examining parturient women admitted to the maternity unit between May 6, 2020, and July 22, 2020, when universal testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 was first employed. Risk factors for severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 positivity were ascertained, disaggregated by refugee status, and other clinical and sociodemographic variables examined. Prevalence ratios were calculated and comparisons made to county-level community prevalence over the same period. The positive test percentage at the county-level during this study period was 21.6%. Of 350 women admitted to the hospital for delivery, 33 (9.4%) tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome 2. When refugee status was determined, 45 women (12.8%) were identified as refugees. Of the 45 refugee women, 8 (17.8%) tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 compared with 25 nonrefugee patients (8.19%) who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (prevalence ratio, 2.16; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-4.51). In addition, 7 of the refugee women who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were from Central Africa. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 outbreak has disproportionately affected refugee populations. This study highlighted the utility of universal screening in mounting a rapid response to an evolving pandemic and how we can better serve refugee communities. Focused response may help achieve more equitable care related to severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 among vulnerable communities. The identification of such populations may help mitigate the spread of the disease and facilitate a timely, culturally, and linguistically enhanced public health response. The most widely known method to assess the LoS and design the terminal areas is the Airport Development Reference Manual by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Based on this, a calculation tool in Microsoft Excel® was implemented to assess the capacity and dimension of the facilities for each functional subsystem of the terminal. The tool, composed of nine correlated spreadsheets, is a useful model to design new structures, evaluate the LoS currently offered, plan interventions, and face the new rules of passenger distancing due to the COVID-19 emergency. An international airport terminal with 20 million/year including Schengen and extra-Schengen passengers was studied. The LoS of the terminal subsystems was assessed and the areas needed for each subsystem were calculated. In the analyzed case study, most subsystems (departure hall, check-in, boarding gates, baggage claim, and arrival halls) were over-designed, according to the definition of the IATA LoS. We developed a generalized SEIR model for the spread of COVID-19, taking into account mildly and symptomatically infected individuals. The logistic and Gaussian models were utilized to forecast and predict the numbers of confirmed cases in both countries. We estimated the parameters that best fit the incidence data. The results provide discouraging forecasts for Iraq from 22 February to 8 October 2020 and for Egypt from 15 February to 8 October 2020. To provide a forecast of the spread of COVID-19 in Iraq, we present various simulation scenarios for the expected peak and its timing using Gaussian and logistic regression models, where the predicted cases showed a reasonable agreement with the officially reported cases. We apply our compartmental model with a time-periodic transmission rate to predict the possible start of the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in Egypt and the possible control measures. Our sensitivity analyses of the basic reproduction number allow us to conclude that the most effective way to prevent COVID-19 cases is by decreasing the transmission rate. The findings of this study could therefore assist Iraqi and Egyptian officials to intervene with the appropriate safety measures to cope with the increase of COVID-19 cases.
