This paper discusses the methodology of an ergonomic intervention applied on dairy family farming production units (FFPU) based in Western France. Contents include a description of the methodology, the combination of observation sessions and work analysis, as well as learning-action sessions. The Action's Chronicle and the Plan of Buildings Destination (PBD) are analyzed considering their influence on farmer's awareness about the complexity of dairy production activity. Since herd monitoring is a very complex practice and has huge impact on milk productivity, the influence of herd spatial distribution on working conditions is considered carefully. The complexity theory approach is applied in order to identify the causes, the sources of variability and the strategies adopted by dairy farmers.</text>

Organic systems were evaluated for cassava root production directed to human comsumption in natura, at Seropédica-RJ. Treatments consisted of: cassava ('IAC 576-70') in single cropping and its intercropping with corn ('Eldorado'), cowpea ('Mauá') or corn plus cowpea. The organic management was standardized and the experimental area was submitted to artificial irrigation during the period of stay of maize in the system. 'Green' (immature) corn ears were harvested at the 'point' required for fresh marketing and the shoot placed on the ground. The cowpea was included to function as green manure being cut at flowering with residues left on the soil surface. Corn and cowpea were sown between cassava rows, in an alternate design, following the first weeding of the main crop (cassava). The cultivar IAC 576-70 showed suitability with respect to organic management, yielding approximatelu 31 Mg ha-1 of marketable roots. No significant differences were detected between cassava single cropping and any of the intercropping tested systems. Thus, corn crop has considerable potential for additional income to the growers. Yield of 'Eldorado' corn averaged 18.125 ears ha-1 correspponding to 5,1 Mg ha-1. Residues coming from cowpea cutting brought about an input close to 12 Mg ha-1, which meant an expressive contribution in nutrient elements, especially nitrogen (about 44 kg N ha-1). The legume crop, in addition, completely covered cassava inter-rows demonstrating its potential for controlling erosion and weeds. The triple intercropping becomes advantageous considering that corn harvesting would justify irrigation and that inclusion of cowpea meant benefitial effects to the system and did not interfere on cassava yield.</text>

<text>The article presents the adaptation effort, application and description of the 'Research Focus' (FREIRE, 1975) associated with Pedagogical Moments (DELIZOICOV, 1991) as a basis for the development of rural extension programs - a combination hitherto used only in the area of science education. The study was conducted with rural communities in Biguaçu, on the coast of Santa Catarina, with the initial goal to understand the reasons for the low participation of the population in the activities proposed by extension agents as well as rural conflicts between families. We point out the 'market' as a unifying theme, which synthesizes a set of 'generative themes': a) permanent preservation areas and forest - including the clandestine production of charcoal hitherto ignored by the technical assistance agencies, b) the intensive pesticides on some crops, c) food security; d) technical assistance. We conclude that the failure to address issues of the population is a major cause of low participation and suggest a sample program to start work from the generator theme related to the forest. Based on discussions generated during the research and developments of the proposed topic in activities that include field experiments with forest and cassavas, dialogue with environmental agencies, legalization of activity charcoal and search for differentiated markets, we conclude that the approach is, of indeed, the potential for rural extension work and alerted to the need for in-service training and insertion of this type of content in the curriculum of agricultural sciences.</text>

<text>The objective of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of organic farming‑compatible products to the coffee leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella. Lime sulphur, enriched Bordeaux mixture (Viça Café Plus), and the 'supermagro' biofertilizer were first tested in laboratory. The most promising product was tested afterwards under field conditions. In laboratory, different concentrations of each product were applied on L. coffeella eggs and on infested coffee‑mined leaves. Only lime sulphur had ovicidal effects at an acceptable concentration (1.6%) for field applications, but no significant effect on larvae mortality was found. Enriched Bordeaux mixture and the 'supermagro' biofertilizer had no effect on L. coffeella eggs and larvae. In the field trial, biweekly or monthly sprayings of lime sulphur at different concentrations caused population decrease after 30 days; however, this effect was not significant after 60 or 90 days.</text>

Papaya seedlings, cv. Baixinho de Santa Amália ('Solo' group), were transplanted to three contiguous structures: (a) greenhouse (plastic covering), (b) shadowed greenhouse ('sombrite' net - 30%, over plastic sheet), and (c) screen house ('sombrite' net - 30%, exclusively), established side-by-side in an area for papaya cultivation under natural conditions. The greenhouse lateral and frontal parts were protected with anti-aphid screen. At transplanting and subsequently in mensal intervals, during the first cropping year, plants were monitored in relation to: height, basal trunk diameter, number of active leaves, and foliar area. Cultural practices were according to technical regulations of the Brazilian law of organic agriculture. Since the initial harvesting, all fruits produced were counted and weighted. Compared with the natural environment, protected cultivation induced increases in plant height (20%). In the greenhouses, particularly in the one without additional covering of 'sombrite', stimulatory effects also occurred, relating to trunk diameter (30%), leafing index (20%) and foliar area (36%) on each evaluation date. Organic papaya cultivation in greenhouses made possible highly significant surplus in marketable fruit yield (67% from weight and 49% from number) within the research period. In addition, cv. Baixinho de Santa Amália had not reached the greenhouses roof (4,5m) by the last quantified harvest, allowing to estimate, based on the linear growth rates registered, a productive cycle exceeding two years under protecting structures.</text>
