This research investigates the challenges, dilemmas and possibilities present in the creation experience of the Cooperativa dos Produtores de Açafrão de Mara Rosa (Cooperaçafrão). With the intention of analysing this experience, as an instrument for insertion of family farmers in the turmeric agribusiness (pigment and seasoning), the text approaches, under a historical perspective, the genesis and growth of the agribusiness for this product in the region. The approach is focused on the conflictive social relations stabilished by social agents that take part in the production chain,exposing the difficulties faced by farmers, and pointing out specially the action of intermediary agents involved in the commercialization process. The study covers the creation of Cooperaçafrão, as a ';social capital'; establishing experience, characterized in what has been known as ';solidary co-operativism';, which aims to make possible the social and economic reproduction of family farmers in this production chain.

KEY-WORDS: Agricultural co-operativism; family agriculture;social capital.
    </text>

                <text>Este artigo analisa o processo de conversão para a olericultura orgânica por meio de estudos de caso junto a agricultores com comercialização em supermercados ou feiras específicas, constatando que o Estado sempre esteve à margem do processo de difusão da agricultura orgânica, determinando o estabelecimento de uma cultura de 'independência' por parte desse setor produtivo. Pelo fato de a produção de hortaliças exigir um contato constante com o mercado e o processo de inovação tecnológica, há uma baixa demanda de apoio por parte pelos agricultores, independentemente do estrato socioeconômico. O artigo mostra também que ações públicas destinadas a promover a conversão para sistemas orgânicos têm maior receptividade junto a produtores familiares, em função da maior exigência por mão-de-obra na agricultura orgânica em relação à convencional, resultando em maiores custos monetários para os que recorrem à mão-de-obra contratada.This article analyzes the process of converting conventional horticulture into organic systems. The study was based on a research made with organic farmers commercializing their produce in specialized organic markets. The State has always been absent, having no dissemination policy for organic farming methods, thus contributing for the sector's 'independent stance'. This situation and the specific technological and commercial dynamics of organic horticulture also explain why the farmers have a low demand for state support, whatever their socio-economic level. The article emphasizes the fact that public polices for converting conventional into organic practices are more likely to be successful with family farmers, due to the higher demand of labor by organic farming, which is more costly for those who resort to hired help.</text>

                <text>Se realizó un estudio de los suelos Vertisoles que son los más difundido en Cuba y donde se plantan la mayoría de los cultivos. Las investigaciones se desarrollaron en la UBPC 'Walter Mulet' de la Empresa 'Antonio Maceo' de Cacocum, provincia de Holguín, seleccionándose tres áreas de 1 hectárea: una en barbecho, otra sembrada de caña por más de 15 años y la última en proceso de reconversión para determinar la resistencia de penetración. Se utilizó el penetrómetro de impacto seleccionándose 16 puntos por hectárea y en cada uno se tomaron los datos a diferentes profundidades cada 10 cm hasta los 50 cm de profundidad; los resultados abordaron el alto grado de resistencia del área en barbecho y sembrada de caña, provocado por la ausencia de atenciones culturales, no siendo así en el área destinada a la reconversión. Para los análisis se utilizaron técnicas de agricultura de precisión y además se notó la presencia de carbonatos aproximadamente a los 30 centímetros de profundidad los que permitirán trazar estrategias tecnológicas para cada caso encaminadas al mejoramiento de los suelos.</text>

                <text>O presente artigo refere-se ao projeto de pesquisa e de extensão denominado 'O uso e a apropriação de TICs pela agricultura familiar no Vale do Caí - RS', financiado pelo edital do MCTI/CNPq. O projeto conta com a parceria da EMATER/ASCAR-RS, do Sindicato dos Trabalhadores Rurais do município de Montenegro-RS, das escolas rurais situadas no Vale do Caí e dos alunos dos cursos de graduação em Contábeis e Administração do Campus de Montenegro/UNISC. Para realização das atividades de extensão vinculadas ao projeto acima referido, no ano de 2017 foi criado o Núcleo de Extensão Tecnológica e Gestão Rural para Agricultura Familiar no Vale do Caí com o objetivo principal de receber as demandas de agricultores familiares do Vale do Caí / RS relacionadas à gestão rural. Verifica-se que o processo de intervenção realizado junto aos agricultores familiares possibilita a compreensão da necessidade de se considerar as particularidades concretas de todos os agricultores, pois eles não podem ser analisados sob um mesmo patamar à medida que se identificam diferenças no que tange aos sistemas de sentido, de significados e, especialmente, com relação às suas condições objetivas de vida. Quanto à apropriação das TIC verificou-se que as formas de controle e de gerenciamento disponíveis no mercado não captam a diversidade e a particularidade da gestão rural das propriedades. Concluiu-se que há necessidade de construção de alternativas que deem conta de tal situação, pois frente ao mercado em um sistema capitalista processos mais adequados à realidade tornam-se imprescindíveis.</text>

With the submission of an application named 'bubulus' which will assist in the diagnosis of bovine diseases and inform veterinary professionals that are located closer to where the farmer is, from a mobile device. So that the family farmer can inform symptoms and possible pathology to the veterinarian to help you in carrying out the logistics to the location where the beef for accelerating the veterinarian's assessment procedures and medication the bovine need. In the interim, to prepare the bubulus application was used to research methodology with exploratory and literature search to identify a problem that the family farmer had, and understand more about the subject, respectively. With this, the preparation of the application for family farmer involved input questions, operation and output to expose the methods that need to build the application and how would its use by the user.</text>

</text>

Nevertheless, other environmentally less aggressive land use systems are also relevant for food production, especially the so-called ebbtide system, in the Maranhão lowlands. This paper describes and evaluates ebbtide production, within the landless settlement project “Diamante Negro/Jutaí”, located in Monção and Igarapé do Meio, municipalities of the Maranhão lowlands. Our farmer-based assessment consisted of interviews with 14 farmers and in loco observations. Furthermore, an agroecological assessment was conducted, based on participative field experimentation, with 15 local farmers. The main factors causing rice productivity losses are related to hydric stress situations and rodents (Arvicola sapidus). The productivity and milling yield of improved rice varieties did not differ statistically.

KEY-WORDS: Rice; Maranhão lowlands; smallholder agriculture; ebbtide production.

</text>

                <text>OBJETIVO: Avaliar as condições de saúde de famílias ligadas ao Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra e de bóias-frias. MÉTODOS: Realizou-se estudo comparativo de três populações: assentamento e acampamento do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, e famílias de bóias-frias, em Unaí, MG, em 2005. Foram coletados os dados referentes às características sociodemográficas e familiares por meio de questionários aplicados a 202 famílias, e realizadas observação estruturada e discussões em grupo. Realizou-se a análise fatorial discriminante para se verificar diferenças entre as comunidades. RESULTADOS: As três comunidades apresentaram uma média de 89%, caracterizando-se como grupos distintos e reforçando a hipótese de que são realmente diferentes entre si em termos de suas condições de vida e saúde. Os trabalhadores bóias-frias apresentaram um alto índice de insegurança alimentar (39,5%), quase o dobro da proporção entre as famílias acampadas e quatro vezes mais que as assentadas. Com uma renda variável e baixa, os bóias-frias estavam mais expostos aos agrotóxicos se comparados aos assentados e acampados. A produção animal desenvolvida por todas as famílias assentadas foi uma característica marcante, ao contrário das famílias bóias-frias que praticamente não contavam com essa possibilidade na cidade. Segundo a percepção das famílias assentadas e acampadas, o Sistema Único de Saúde não tem atendido as necessidades de saúde da maioria delas, principalmente pela dificuldade do acesso aos serviços. Para esse grupo, o atendimento de suas necessidades se dá após reivindicações e pressões sobre os governos. CONCLUSÕES: Segundo a percepção das famílias do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, o fato de ser do Movimento e estar organizado melhora suas perspectivas de saúde, em comparação aos bóias-frias. Os resultados da modernização conservadora no campo brasileiro têm agravado as condições de vida dos bóias-frias gerando uma superexploração do trabalho humano, enquanto que a Reforma Agrária tem possibilitado uma melhor qualidade de vida e saúde para as famílias, quando comparadas nas áreas estudadas.OBJETIVO: Evaluar las condiciones de salud de familias relacionadas al Movimiento de Trabajadores Rurales Sin Tierra de Brasil y de trabajadores rurales 'jornaleros'. La producción animal desarrollada por todas las familias asentadas fue una característica determinante, al contrario de las familias de 'jornaleros' que prácticamente no contaban con esa posibilidad en la ciudad. METHODS: The research involved a comparative study of three populations: a settlement and a camp linked to the Rural Workers' Movement, and the families of temporary rural workers in a city of Southeast Brazil, in 2005. Information relating to sociodemographic characteristics and families were collected by means of questionnaires that were put to 202 families. In addition, structured observation and group discussions were used. A discriminative factor analysis was carried out to confirm differences between the communities. RESULTS: The three communities scored an average of 89%, which implies that they are distinct groups and supports the hypothesis that there are real differences between them when it come to health and lifestyle conditions. There was a high rate of food insecurity (39.5%) among temporary rural workers, almost double that of families who were camping and four times greater than those living on settlements. Temporary rural workers' salaries were low and fluctuate, meaning that they were more exposed to pesticides than the families living on settlements or in camps. A striking characteristic of families living on the settlement was that they all practiced animal rearing, unlike the families of temporary rural workers, practically none of whom were able to do so in the city. The perceptions of most families who were living on settlements or in camps were that the Brazilian Health System had not been meeting their health needs, mainly due to access difficulties. For this group, their needs are met only after making complaints to and putting pressure on governors. CONCLUSIONS: The view held by families from the Landless Rural Workers' Movement was that the fact that they belonged to the Movement and were better organized meant their health was better than that of temporary rural workers. The conservative modernization of rural Brazil has led to worse conditions for temporary rural workers, while Agrarian Reform has allowed for a better quality of life and improved health conditions among families, when compared in the areas under study.</text>
