Las Naciones Unidas el año 2014 concibieron en un llamado a concentrar la atención mundial en la importancia del rol de la agricultura familiar, a pequeña escala, a fin de disminuir el hambre, la pobreza, seguridad alimentaria, mejorar la gestión de los recursos naturales, protección del medio ambiente y lograr el desarrollo sostenible, en particular en zonas rurales. La tradición social rural en Latinoamérica, en el siglo XX, estaba evidenciada por las luchas e identidad de movimientos campesinos, que viven trabajando sus tierras para el progreso de su vida familiar y colectiva, sea en asociaciones, cooperativas, comunas u otras formas de organización, para batallar por sus derechos y de todos los desposeídos del campo y la ciudad.Otra problemática de la agricultura campesina y familiar son las estructuras, como el acceso, tenencia y propiedad sobre la tierra y el agua, la creación de fuentes de trabajo y el sostenimiento de las poblaciones en zonas rurales. Los campesinos laboran en sus propias parcelas, también son aparceros o arrendatarios siendo un sector social cada vez más explotado y pobre.La acumulación de tierras y territorios hoy en día es el primer factor en la destrucción de la agricultura familiar y la economía campesina. En la actualidad, la realidad agrícola campesina está determinada por el tipo de territorio montañoso y de altura otorgando al problema de la tierra otras características.El sistema de haciendas de nuestros países que se fue robusteciendo luego de la independencia a costa de la usurpación de las tierras comunales es un modo de dominación y explotación social de los indígenas. Una apreciación general de la población de los campesinos andinos, señala que un tercio vive en el campo conservando un nivel de autoabastecimiento alimentario. Las tres cuartas partes de lo que consumen son productos nacionales, cuyo peso en la producción campesina representa un 40% aproximadamente, delconjunto de los alimentos, sin embargo persiste el nivel de pobreza rural con alrededor del 60%, con desnutrición asentada en zonas rurales del 26 %. Además, países andinos mantienen una alta inequidad en el acceso a recursos naturales en el campo, también se hace hincapié que superan 50% de unidades productivas del agro con un rango entre 0 y 5 hectáreas, lo contrario sucede con las unidades de producción mayores a 200 hectáreas representan menos del 1%.El campesinado andino no comercializa la totalidad de la producción como es el caso de la agricultura empresarial, en lo relacionado a los insumos, se limitan al máximo a comprar, se basan en el autoconsumo y el reciclaje de subproductos.En casi todos los países andinos, los Gobiernos han reemplazado el concepto de campesinado por “agricultura familiar” en sus políticas de desarrollo rural. Los campesinados latinoamericanos afrontan el nuevo milenio excluidos del sistema. Producen en condiciones precarias, productos que carecen de compradores en el mercado y si los compran los intermediarios fijan sus precios que muchas veces solamente salvan la inversión, sus unidades productivas tienen poca asistencia técnica, no son sujetos de créditos, y sus vías de acceso generalmente son de tercer orden.Todo lo antedicho demuestra claramente la exclusión estructural que sufren los campesinos latinoamericanos.</text>

                <text>Colombian mango production, which exceeded 261,000 t in 2020, generates about 40% of the whole fruit as solid waste, of which more than 50% are seed kernels (over 52,000 t solid by-product); though none is currently used for commercial purposes. This study reports the results of the supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction of an oil rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs) from revalorized mango seed kernels and the optimization of the process by the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In pilot-scale scCO2 experiments, pressure (23 MPa–37 MPa) and temperature (52 °C–73 °C) were varied, using 4.5 kg of CO2. The highest experimental oil extraction yield was 83 g/kg (37 MPa and 63 °C); while RSM predicted that 84 g/kg would be extracted at 35 MPa and 65 °C. Moreover, by fine-tuning pressure and temperature it was possible to obtain an EFA-rich lipid fraction in linoleic (37 g/kg) and α-linolenic (4 g/kg) acids, along with a high oleic acid content (155 g/kg), by using a relatively low extraction pressure (23 MPa), which makes the process a promising approach for the extraction of oil from mango waste on an industrial scale, based on a circular economy model.</text>

                <text>The structure and function of rhizosphere microbial communities are affected by the plant health status. In this study, we investigated the effect of root rot on the avocado rhizosphere microbiome, using 16S rDNA and ITS sequencing. Furthermore, we isolated potential fungal pathogens associated with root rot symptoms and assessed their pathogenic activity on avocado. We found that root rot did not affect species richness, diversity or community structure, but induced changes in the relative abundance of several microbial taxa. Root rot increased the proportion of Pseudomonadales and Burkholderiales in the rhizosphere but reduced that of Actinobacteria, Bacillus spp. and Rhizobiales. An increase in putative opportunistic fungal pathogens was also detected in the roots of symptomatic trees; the potential pathogenicity of Mortierella sp., Fusarium spp., Lasiodiplodia sp. and Scytalidium sp., is reported for the first time for the State of Veracruz, Mexico. Root rot also potentially modified the predicted functions carried out by rhizobacteria, reducing the proportion of categories linked with the lipid and amino-acid metabolisms whilst promoting those associated with quorum sensing, virulence, and antibiotic resistance. Altogether, our results could help identifying microbial taxa associated to the disease causal agents and direct the selection of plant growth-promoting bacteria for the development of biocontrol microbial consortia.</text>

                <text>Genetic improvement of coffee plants represents a great challenge for breeders. Conventional breeding takes a too long time for responding timely to market demands, climatic variations and new biological threads. The correlation of genetic markers with the plant phenotype and final product quality is usually poor. Additionally, the creation and use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are often legally restricted and rejected by customers that demand natural products. Therefore, we developed a non-targeted metabolomics approach to accelerate conventional breeding. Our main idea was to identify highly heritable metabolites in Coffea canephora seedlings, which are linked to coffee cup quality. We employed a maternal half-sibs approach to estimate the metabolites heritability in open-pollinated plants in both leaves and fruits at an early plant development stage. We evaluated the cup quality of roasted beans and correlated highly heritable metabolites with sensory quality traits of the coffee beverage. Our results provide new insights about the heritability of metabolites of C. canephora plants. Furthermore, we found strong correlations between highly heritable metabolites and sensory traits of coffee beverage. We revealed metabolites that serve as predictive metabolite markers at an early development stage of coffee plants. Informed decisions can be made on plants of six months old, compared to 3.5 to 5 years using conventional selection methods. The metabolome-wide association study (MWAS) drastically accelerates the selection of C. canephora plants with desirable characteristics and represents a novel approach for the focused breeding of crops.</text>

                <text>Passiflora edulis Flavicarpa, Passiflora edulis Sims, and Passiflora ligularis Juss are Colombian fruits (passion fruits) of important exportation value. They act efficiently as antioxidants, antifungal, and antimicrobial compounds due to their high polyphenol content. Polyphenols can be quantified by the Folin-Ciocalteu (F-C) reaction. Food matrices, solvent polarity, and several different reacting conditions are critical for the optimum extraction and quantification of polyphenols. Chromatographic identification and quantitation are satisfactory with access to a vast number of reference standards considering the availability of abundant phenolic compounds in crude extracts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate alternatives and specific F-C reacting conditions aiming at determining the highest total phenolic content (TPC) in three Colombian Passifloras. Among optimum reacting conditions, reduced reaction time and diluted alkali conditions yielded desirable positive results highlighting lower working time and minimum reagent waste production. For higher extraction yield, acetone 70% was the best solvent to capture more phenolics from the seedless pulp of these Colombian passion fruits.</text>

Burm is an important crop that grows between latitudes 30&amp;#176; North and 30&amp;#176; South, the main producers being China, the USA, Mexico, India, Brazil, and Spain. In Spain, lemon grows mainly in Mediterranean areas such as Murcia, Valencia, and Andaluc&amp;#237;a. The most cultivated varieties are &amp;#8220;Fino&amp;#8221; and &amp;#8220;Verna&amp;#8221;. In this study, five varieties of lemon, &amp;#8220;Verna&amp;#8221;, &amp;#8220;B&amp;#233;tera&amp;#8221;, &amp;#8220;Eureka&amp;#8221;, &amp;#8220;Fino 49&amp;#8221;, and &amp;#8220;Fino 95&amp;#8221; were evaluated on different rootstocks: three new Forner-Alcaide (&amp;#8220;FA13&amp;#8221;, &amp;#8220;FA5&amp;#8221;, &amp;#8220;FA517&amp;#8221;), Citrus macrophylla, Wester, and Citrus aurantium L. Hydrodistillation was used to obtain essential oil from fresh peels and then the volatile profile was studied by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 26 volatile compounds were identified, limonene being the main one followed by &amp;#946;-pinene, &amp;#947;-terpinene, sabinene, and &amp;#945;-pinene. The results revealed that Forner-Alcaide rootstocks (&amp;#8220;FA5&amp;#8221; &amp;gt; &amp;#8220;FA517&amp;#8221; &amp;gt; &amp;#8220;FA13&amp;#8221;) proved to be the best rootstocks for the aroma quality as they led to high volatile contents, followed by C. aurantium and C. macrophylla. Among the other varieties, the most aromatic one was &amp;#8220;Eureka&amp;#8221;.                 <text>Honey is one of the oldest sweetening foods and has economic importance, making this product attractive to adulteration with cheap sugars. This can cause a critical problem in the honey industry and a possible health risk. The present work has the aim of evaluating the authenticity of honey commercialized in two different provinces of Ecuador (Pichincha and Loja) by performing physicochemical and spectroscopic analyses. For this study 25 samples were collected from different places and markets and characterized by water, sucrose, reducing sugars and electric conductivity measurement. Also, their Raman and Infrared (IR) spectra were recorded and analysed using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in order to verify the quality of the honeys. In addition, a screening of several pesticides was performed in order to verify possible chemical threats to human health and honey bees. It was found that 8 samples have a deviation from the Standard established parameters. Two of them have a high difference in the content of sucrose and reducing sugars, which are located deviated from all the other samples in the PCA of the applied vibrational spectroscopy (IR/Raman), shaping two clear clusters. The results show that Raman and IR spectroscopy is appropriate techniques for the quality control of honey and correlates well with the physicochemical analyses.</text>

                <text>The bee Melipona scutellaris is considered the reared meliponine species with the largest distribution in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, with records from the state of Rio Grande do Norte down to the state of Bahia. Considering the importance of this species in the generation of income for family agriculture and in the preservation of areas with natural vegetation, this study aimed at providing knowledge on the distribution of natural colonies of M. scutellaris in the state of Bahia. Literature information, interviews with stinglessbee beekeepers, and expeditions were conducted to confirm the natural occurrence of the species. A total of 102 municipalities showed records for M. scutellaris, whose occurrence was observed in areas ranging from sea level up to 1,200-meter height. The occurrence of this species in the state of Bahia is considered to be restricted to municipalities on the coastal area and the Chapada Diamantina with its rainforests. Geographic coordinates, elevation, climate and vegetation data were obtained, which allowed a map to be prepared for the area of occurrence in order to support conservation and management policies for the species.A abelha Melipona scutellaris é considerada a espécie criada de meliponíneo com maior distribuição no norte e nordeste do Brasil, com ocorrência registradas desde o Estado do Grande do Norte até o Estado da Bahia. Considerando a importância desta espécie na geração de renda para agricultura familiar e na manutenção de áreas com vegetação natural, este trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer a distribuição de colônias naturais de M. scutellaris no Estado da Bahia. Informações de literatura, entrevistas com meliponicultores e expedições foram realizadas para confirmar a ocorrência natural da espécie. Um total de 102 municípios apresentou registro de M. scutellaris, cuja ocorrência foi observada em áreas desde o nível do mar até 1.200 metros de altitude. A ocorrência desta espécie no Estado da Bahia é considerada como restrita a municípios da área costeira e da Chapada Diamantina, onde existem matas úmidas. Dados de coordenadas geográficas, altitude, clima e vegetação foram obtidos, possibilitando elaborar o mapa da área de ocorrência, subsidiando políticas de conservação e manejo da espécie.</text>
