Resumen. El cultivo de la papa ocupa el cuarto lugar en el mundo en importancia después del arroz, trigo y maíz. La papa criolla (Solanum phureja) posee características valiosas desde el punto de vista culinario y nutricional, por su alto contenido de vitaminas, minerales, fibra y calidad de proteína. Colombia es un centro de diversidad y origen de papas criollas, lo que representa un enorme potencial de recurso genético para el fitomejoramiento. En la Universidad Nacional de Colombia se conserva el banco de germoplasma de papas criollas de Colombia. El estudio de los cariotipos es importante para entender las bases genéticas que apoyan los cruces que se realizan en los programas de mejoramiento. A pesar de la importancia de este recurso, la caracterización de los cariotipos de las accesiones no ha sido realizada completamente. En este estudio se caracterizaron dos materiales de la colección de S. phureja y tres provenientes de la F1 del cruce de un genotipo resistente y otro susceptible a la enfermedad conocida como gota de la papa. El análisis comparativo permitió identificar diferencias en la morfología celular, dos niveles de ploidía (diploide y triploide), con dos variaciones aneugénicas (hipodiploide y trisomía doble) y cuatro números cromosómicos (18, 24, 26 y 36) para los cinco genotipos evaluados.Abstract. Potato crop is forth in importance worldwide after rice, wheat, and corn. Diploid potato cv. Criolla (Solanum phureja) shows highly desired culinary and nutritional characteristics, such as vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein quality. Colombia is a diversity and origin center of diploid potatoes cv. Criolla, which represents an enormous genetic resource potential for plant breeding. At Universidad Nacional de Colombia the potato 'criollas' germplasm bank is mantained. Karyotype analysis is important for understanding genetic basis of plant breeding. Despite the importance of this resource karyotype analysis of this collection has not been completed. In this study two accesions of the S. phureja collection and three genotypes from a F1 obtained from a cross between a late blight disease resistant and a susceptible genotype were characterized. Comparative analysis allowed the identification of differences in the cellular morphology, two ploidy levels (diploid and triploid) with aneugenic variations (hypodiploidy and double trisomy), and four chromosome numbers (18, 24, 26 y 36) for the five genotypes evaluated.

En Cuba existen 673 casas de cultivo de diferentes dimensiones, 12 m x 45 m y 20 m x 40 m agrupadas en 24 módulos (42 ha), distribuidos en 13 provincias, las que brindan a la población y al mercado de frontera producciones entre las 200 t·ha-1 y 300 t·ha-1 de hortalizas por año. Para las que los especialistas del Instituto de Investigaciones de Riego y Drenaje, proyectaron sistemas de riego por goteo. En la obtención de cosechas de buena calidad y altos rendimientos es imprescindible que los sistemas de riego funcionen con una elevada eficiencia. El presente trabajo se desarrolló con el objetivo de determinar la uniformidad del riego a través del cálculo del coeficiente de uniformidad (Cu) del sistema trabajando con un solo lateral y con dos laterales de gotero sobre el cantero en condiciones de producción. El estudio se realizó en el modulo de casas de cultivos 'Las Guásimas', situada en la provincia de La Habana a los 23° 00' ; 33,12' Latitud Norte y 82° 17'; 42,57' Longitud Oeste, a 92 m sobre el nivel medio del mar, Municipio Arroyo Naranjo; donde quedó demostrado que el coeficiente de uniformidad para el gasto de los emisores, clasifica en la categoría de bueno (> 80%), pero fuera del valor nominal recomendado por el fabricante (2 L·h-1) para ambas situaciones. El Cu general de los sistemas fue bueno y excelente (> 80 y > 90%). Concluimos que fue superior el coeficiente de uniformidad de los gastos y del sistema en general (incluyendo presiones), cuando se utilizó un lateral por hilera de cultivo. Los sistemas de riego en estas unidades productivas funcionan en muchos casos con presiones superiores a las calculadas por proyecto, lo que provoca que el gasto de los emisores sea superior a los diseñados por el fabricante.

A problemática atual da questão ambiental remete-nos à discussão histórica da racionalidade científica, sobretudo nas sociedades ocidentais contemporâneas, onde o conflito entre a relação homem/meio natural fica evidenciado. Pretendendo dar conta deste conflito, a ecologia constituída como disciplina científica destaca-se como um campo problemático da ciência que busca integrar diversas disciplinas em torno de si. Alguns movimentos sociais, orientando-se por uma 'visão ecologizada' (ecossistêmica) de mundo, partem para denunciar os impactos ambientais oriundos, dentre outros, do modelo tecno-industrial altamente poluidor, consumidor dos recursos naturais e gerador da atual desordem global da biosfera. Esses movimentos, sendo orientados por éticas diferenciadas, reivindicam mudanças do quadro social e ambiental da sociedade atual a fim de garantir as necessidades das futuras gerações.Our modern concern over the environment brings us to the historical discussion of Scientific Rationalism, principally in contemporary western society, where the conflict between Man and the Natural World is at its greatest. In an attempt to solve this conflict, Ecology, a field of science, stands out riddled with problems, seeking to draw subjects from other fields into its own. Following an 'ecologized world view' (Ecosystemics), some social currents denounce the environmental impact of, technological and industrial models, highly pollutant and dependent on natural resources, generating the contemporary disorder in our biosphere. These movements, following different schools of thought, demand changes in society, taking into consideration the present and future state of the environment.

El durazno (Prunus persica L. Batsch.) de la variedad Ana fue obtenido de un árbol proveniente de hueso en la huerta comercial 'San Carlos' en Aguascalientes, y tiene las características de alta producción y fruto con buena aceptación en el mercado. La selección es un método de fitomejoramiento de especies frutícolas, que consiste en identificar individuos sobresalientes, teniendo como base las plantas que provienen de semilla y la preferencia de alguna característica deseada como criterio de selección. Los objetivos de esta investigación fueron caracterizar y evaluar selecciones de durazno Ana. La investigación se realizó del 2000 a 2004, en la huerta comercial 'San Carlos' ubicada en el municipio de Asientos, Ags. Se seleccionaron 21 árboles provenientes de hueso, a los que se les evaluó la fenología, rendimiento y la calidad del fruto. Para el análisis de la producción y número de frutos se utilizó un diseño de bloques al azar; para las características del fruto, un diseño de bloques al azar con arreglo en parcelas divididas con diez repeticiones, y para la comparación de medias, se utilizó la DMS (P

Este trabalho foi conduzido em Coimbra, MG, no ano agrícola 1996/97 e objetivou avaliar a ocorrência de insetos fitófagos e de predadores no milho e no feijoeiro cultivados em sistema exclusivo e em policultivo. Foi realizado um cultivo de milho (25/10/1996 a 24/03/1997) e dois cultivos de feijão[o primeiro de 25/10/1996 a 20/01/1997 (cultivo 'das águas') e o segundo de 25/03/1997 a 21/07/1997 (cultivo 'da seca')]. Realizaram-se contagens diretas das populações de insetos fitófagos e de predadores nas culturas. Menores densidades populacionais de herbívoros considerados preferenciais da cultura do milho [Dalbulus maidis (Delong & Wolcott) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) e Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] e do feijoeiro [Diabrotica speciosa (Germ.), Cerotoma arcuata (Oliv.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) e Empoasca kraemeri (Ross & Moore) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae)] estiveram associadas ao cultivo consorciado. As densidades de herbívoros generalistas como Thrips tabaci Lind. (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) e Pseudoplusia includens (Walk.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) foram maiores no feijoeiro consorciado com o milho. No cultivo 'das águas', o total de insetos fitófagos foi maior no feijoeiro consorciado com o milho do que no feijoeiro cultivado exclusivamente, sendo que o inverso ocorreu no cultivo 'da seca'. Os predadores Anthicus sp. (Coleoptera: Anthicidae) e Hymenoptera: Formicidae foram mais abundantes no milho e no feijoeiro cultivados exclusivamente do que as culturas foram consorciadas.This work was carried out in Coimbra, MG,Brazil, during the agricultural year of 1996/97 and it had the objective of evaluating the phytophagous insects and predators occurrence in maize and bean cultivated in exclusive and policultive systems. One cultivation of maize (from 10/25/1996 to 03/24/1997) and two cultivation of bean were conducted [the first one from 10/25/1996 to 01/20/1997 (rainy period cultivation) and the second one from 03/25/1997 a 07/21/1997 (drought period cultivation)]. The population of phytophagous insects and predators incident in the cultures were counted directly. Lower herbivores population density, which attacks preferentially maize [Dalbulus maidis (Delong & Wolcott) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) and Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] and bean [Diabrotica speciosa (Germ.), Cerotoma arcuata (Oliv.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Empoasca kraemeri (Ross & Moore) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae)] were associated to the intercropped system. The generalists-insect densities as Thrips tabaci Lind. (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Pseudoplusia includens (Walk.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were higher in the bean intercropped with maize. The phytophagous-insect total number was higher in the bean intercropped with maize in the rainy period cultivation than in the bean cultivated exclusively. The opposite happened in the drought period cultivation. The predators Anthicus sp. (Coleoptera: Anthicidae) and Hymenoptera: Formicidae were more abundant in the maize and bean cultivated exclusively than when the cultures were cultivated intercropped.

Presenta una investigación sobre la historia taxonómica y estudios sobre la ecología del 'cactus enano de Holguín', Escobaria cubensis (Britton & Rose) Hunt, 1978 desde 1909 hasta 1990, elementos importantes, para la conservación y como contribución al conocimiento de la historia del patrimonio natural holguinero, con datos históricos sobre visitas de personalidades del mundo y Holguín. Se estudiaron 37 materiales correspondientes a notas de viajes, cartas y publicaciones. Se señala la posibilidad de que el colector, J. Shafer estuvo en dos zonas de distribución. Las contribuciones al conocimiento de su ecología hasta 1990 se basaron en la observación y descripción.

This article firstly introduces the Special Feature 'Applying Ecology', addressing the use of ecological information for dealing with conservation and environmental problems in Chile. This is part of a series of special features in Revista Chilena de Historia Natural, intended for exploring the contribution of naturalists in making sound decisions in social-environmental planning. However, the low involvement of Chilean biologists has become a factor potentially affecting the quality of environmental decisions and policies, and increasing the chance of unwanted results, which raises some open questions about ethics. In such a context, the second part of the article analyzes the issue of involvement from different perspectives, considering its causes and consequences at individual and collective levels.Este artículo presenta en primer lugar el Tema Especial 'Aplicando la Ecología', que aborda el uso de información ecológica para enfrentar problemas ambientales y de conservación en Chile. Este es parte de una serie de temas especiales en la Revista Chilena de Historia Natural, destinados a explorar la contribución de los naturalistas en la toma de decisiones bien fundamentadas en planificación socio-ambiental. Sin embargo, la baja participación de los biólogos chilenos se ha convertido en un factor que potencialmente afecta la calidad de las decisiones y políticas ambientales, y aumenta la probabilidad de los resultados no deseados, lo cual plantea algunas preguntas abiertas sobre ética. En este contexto, la segunda parte del artículo analiza el problema de la participación desde distintas perspectivas, considerando sus causas y consecuencias a nivel individual y colectivo.

<p align='justify'>Se constató la aparición de <i>Faustinus</i> sp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) atacando hojas y tallos de tomate (<i>Solanum lycopersicum</i> L.) en el estado de Espíritu Santo, en el sureste del Brasil, entre los meses de abril de 2006 y marzo de 2008. Las larvas de <i>Faustinus</i> sp. perforan los tallos de la planta, mientras que los adultos se alimentan del follaje. Los tallos perforados se quiebran fácilmente con el viento, la manipulación, o el propio peso de la planta. La rotación de cultivos y eliminación de residuos de cosecha pueden ayudar a reducir el nivel poblacional de la plaga.</p>

1. The present paper includes studies about the Cranial Anatomy, Geographical Distribution and Ecology of Crocodylus intermedius in Colombia. 2. The material has been collected from the areas of the rivers Guaviare, Ariari, Güéjar and Cunimía. It consists of sixteen skulls and fifty-four fetus-containing eggs. 3. A detailed description of the skulls is given, the lengths of which range between 25.4 cm. and 70.7 cm. 4. Concerning the scalation: there is a single row of occipitals containing between 2 and 6 individual scutes: two rows of cervicals, the first containing 4 and the second 2 scales. The dorsals are in 16-17 transverse rows, the broadest of which contains 5-6 individual scales. The ventrals are in 25 to 27½ transverse, rows, the broadest of which contains between 14 and 18 individual scales. The tail has between 17 and 19 double-crested, and 17 to 19 single-crested segments. The scalation of 4 fetus does not show any special characteristics. 5. The coloration of Cr. intermedius varies between light-grey in juveniles and greyish green, light brown to yellowish in adults. The greenish color is due to the extensive growth of algae on the dorsal side. There are dark marks and spots on the entire dorsal and lateral sides as well as on the ventral side of the tail. The throat and belly are white and without marks. The colour of living specimens on sand banks, in bright sun appears almost white. 6. Cr. intermedius ranges, in Colombia, between the Rio Arauca in the east and the lower course of the Río Duda in the west. No intermedius are to be found in the rivers Vaupés. Caquetá and Putumayo (tributaries of the Amazon). In Venezuela he ranges as far as San Fernando de Atabapo in the upper Orinoco area. For unexplainable reasons he does not enter the Amazon, by the comunicatron of the Orinoco-Casiquiare-Río Negro. 7. Numerous ecological observations were made on habitat, size, alimentation, parasites, reproduction and behavior. The 'record' in size is apparently shown by an old male, which, according to Humboldt was 22 feet 3 inches long (6.78 meters). As far as known the females do not grow larger than 4 to 4.50 meters. The 4 fetus were between 22.4 cm. and 23.7 cm. long. The food of intermedius consists mainly of fish: in the stomach specimens a great amount of small stones were found ranging from 440 gr. to 920 gr. The egg laying period takes place mainly in January and the juveniles hatch in March. The eggs are white; their average size is about 8 em. long and 5 cm. wide. Up to 70 eggs were found in a nest. March 3, 1957 a nest 43 cm. deep and 51 cm. wide at the base, was found in the Río Guaviare. It was situated on a, sand-bank, about 40 meters from the river. The first eggs were found in a depth of 27 cm. The temperature in the nest, measured before the eggs were taken out, was slightly higher than outside. The shell of the eggs was quite elastic while still in the nest, but became hard soon after being taken out. Of the 57 eggs found in the nest, 54 contained fetus, the remaining 3 were rotten. The fetus already moved; but still had a well developed vitelline sack. The female, a specimen a about 3 meters long, remained in the water, splashing furiously. Cr. intermedius undergoes an aestivation the dry season in the Llanos Orientales (Rivers Arauca, Meta, Vichada) but no information is available from the Guaviare area. The Orinoco Crocodile of the Guaviare area digs no subterranean caves as does Cr. acutus from the Magdalena region and other rivers of northern Colombia. Due to excessive hide-hunting Cr. intermedius was practically exterminated in large areas and became rather scarce even in remote regions. 1. Se presenta una investigación detallada sobre la anatomía craneal, distribución geográfica y ecología de Crocodylus intermedius en Colombia. 2. El material que forma la base para estos estudios, consiste en 16 cráneos y 54 huevos que contienen fetus, coleccionados en los ríos Guaviare, Ariari, Güejar y Cunimía en 1955-56 y 1956-57. 3. La descripción anatómica craneal fue hecha a base de cráneos de 25.4 centímetros a 70.7 centímetros de largo (tabla 2). 4. Se hicieron estudios detallados sobre el escamado, incluyendo el 4 de fetus (tabla 1). Existe una sola hilera de Occipitalia que contiene entre 2 y 6 escamas y dos de Cervicalia de las cuales la primera contiene 4 y la segunda 2 escamas. Los Dorsalia estan formados por 16 0 17 hileras transversales; el número de escamas en una de ellas es de 5 a 6. Hay 25 a 27½ hileras transversales de los Ventralia; el número de escamas en una hilera está entre 14 y 18. La cresta caudal doble contiene entre 17 y 19 segmentos, y la sencilla un número igual. 5. La coloración varía entre gris claro, verde y carmelita claro. Existen diferencias entre jóvenes y adultos. �� 6. La distribución geográfica abarca los territorios entre el rio Arauca por el oriente y el río Duda por el occidente. En el Vaupés, Caquetá y Putumayo afluentes del Amazonas no existe C. intermedius (mapa). En el Orinoco (Venezuela) se extiende hasta la región de San Fernando de Atabapo únicamente, pero no entra al Amazonas por el Casiquiare y el Rio Negro por razones aún desconocidas. 7. Los estudios sobre la ecología abarcan: Habitat, abundancia, tamaño, alimentación, parásitos, reproducción y costumbres. Se presenta una descripción del nido, los huevos y el fetus. 8. La caza comercial llevo a la extinción a C. intermedius en áreas extensas.

El agave es una especie no maderable, que puede ser utilizada para la extracción de celulosa. Se han realizado trabajos que reportan la elaboración de papel a partir de fibras de seis especies de agaves: A. lechuguilla, A. Angustifolia, A. tequilana, A. americana, A. salmiana y A. mapisaga, utilizando diferentes métodos para la extracción de fibras. Sus resultados indican que A. salmiana y A. mapisaga fueron las especies que presentaron mejores características para la posible elaboración de papel. En este trabajo se buscó crear un nuevo valor agregado a las hojas residuos de agavaceas de la agroindustria de elaboración del pulque, a partir de A. salmiana B. Otto ex Salm. Con este propósito se obtuvo pulpa de celulosa por dos métodos: pulpeo alcalino y el método conocido como Organosolv. Se evaluaron las características y eficacias de los procesos bajo un estudio de optimización. Como resultado, se concluye que las condiciones óptimas y reproducibles para obtener pulpa de celulosa de Agave salmiana mediante pulpeo alcalino fueron: [NaOH] 12%; 24 horas; [Na2CO3] 2.5% y [Na2SO4] 0.2%. En contraste para el pulpeo ácido las condiciones óptimas fueron: H2O 60%; 6 horas; [CH3COOH] 80% y [HCl] 0.5%. Sobre la base del análisis de respuesta 'mayor rendimiento mejor' en el ANOVA, se encontró que para el pulpeo alcalino, el factor que tiene mayor incidencia en el proceso es el tiempo, y el factor que tiene menor incidencia es [Na2CO3]; por otro lado, para el pulpeo ácido el factor que tiene la mayor contribución es [CH3COOH] y el de menor incidencia es la velocidad de agitación. En los experimentos confirmatorios de pulpeo alcalino se obtuvo un rendimiento de 39.69% de pulpa de celulosa de Agave salmiana, mientras que para pulpeo Organosolv se obtuvo un rendimiento de 71.57%.
