FOOD INSECURITY IN MAPUTO CITY IN 2008 AND 2014 ABSTRACT This study is based on comparing the results of the study undertook by AFSUN in 2008 and the data collected in this dissertation. It as objectives to characterize the levels of food insecurity in Maputo City for the years 2008 and 2014, to determine the values of indicators to assess the trend of food insecurity levels in Maputo City for the years 2008 and 2014 and compare the levels of Food Insecurity 2008 with 2014. The research used the quantitative method 'research survey' recommended by Fonseca (2002, p. 37) and Denise and Gerhardt (2009, p. 37-39) using a questionnaire as a data collection tool. It was done a survey to collect data on 473 Households (HH) selected by sample. They were selected HH of Municipal Districts (MD) of KaMpfumo, KaMaxaqueni, KaLhamanculo, KaMubukwane and KaMavota. To ensure the comparability of results it was selected in each MD, the same proportion of households compared to the sample done by AFSUN in 2008. In the analysis and interpretation of data, we used the following indicators, (which were taken as analytical variables), which allows to measure and to assess the degree of food insecurity during the month prior to the survey) HFIAS and HFIAP indicator. The results processed using the SPSS, showed that the level of tabulated values of the points (scores) of HFIAS range of HH is on average 3.9% and also show a 'fall' sharper values in the HFIAS average, compared to the value recorded in the study in 2008. On the other hand, were taken, individually, the answers given on the food insecurity situation in the four months preceding the survey for which a comparison between the results of studies done in 2008 and in 2014 shows a trend of some improvement of Food Insecurity levels of respondents HH, noting that only about 18.4% of respondents HH 'had concerns about not having enough food in the last four weeks' and only about 16.7% of them were unable to eat the kind of food preferred by lack of financial resources to acquire them. Overall, the results suggest that there was a trend towards improved levels of food insecurity of households surveyed, compared to the results of the study in 2008.

<text>The size and shape of the cutting edge of the mandibles from the five most abundant copepod species found in Mejillones Bay are described with the aim to create a helpful tool for the identification of copepod prey and their size from predator gut contents. Good allometric relationships were found between the carapace length and the mandible width for the species Paracalanus parvus, Centropages brachiatus and Acartia tonsa. By contrast, the cyclopoids Oithona sp. and Corycaeus sp. did not present a good relationship between these two parameters, presumably due to the presence of more than a species in the study area. Applying the edge index (Itoh 1970) the copepods were classified as herbivores (e.g., P. parvus), omnivores (e.g., C. brachiatus and A. tonsa), and carnivores (e.g., Oithona sp.). In general, there was a tight relationship between the morphometric characters of the mandible blade and the trophic ecology of each species. The good relationship between the mandible width and the carapace length of the calanoid species will permit the estimation of the size of an ingested copepod by a predator, within a certain degree of accuracy, by measuring the width of the mandibles found in gut contents.

In Brazil biodiversity, specially plant diversity, is considered an important source of wealth. Clearly, however, any enduring retribution in social benefits does not depend simply on the use of biodiversity, but on its sustainable use. Regional descriptions of fauna and flora constitute a first step in this direction. Utilized for mapping and quantification of biodiversity, such descriptions allow mechanistic interpretations of the functioning of nature. Without the understanding of these mechanisms 'sustainable development' remains what it is today: a political appeal without social retribution (Beardsley, 1994). Our efforts aim to provide a secure theoretical basis for the elucidation of this 'most marvellous mystery of life, the means by which so much diversity was generated from so little physical material' (Wilson, 1992). After all, 'how can you carry out a national policy - or even make intelligent decisions on your own life - if you do not understand the underlying questions' (Sagan, 1996)? This is a genuine Brazilian problem requiring an urgent gathering of efforts, since it has direct practical applications on the socio-economical well-being and the health of the people.</text>

<text>The feeding of Engraulis anchoita was studied in the coastal reproductive habitat of the northern population during the spawning period. Stomach contents of anchovy adults and plankton samples taken during a research cruise were examined. The highest stomach fullness values were found in the Rio de la Plata estuary, particularly at stations close to the surface salinity front. Copepods, particularly those < 1 mm total length, represented by Paracalanus spp. and Oithona spp., were the most abundant prey. The dominance of small copepods in the Argentine anchovy diet is noted for the first time. Ecological implications of this fact are discussed. Other abundant preys were appendicularians, cladocerans, and fish eggs. The species composition of the zooplankton samples coincided roughly with that found in the stomach contents. However, selective feeding was observed on preys > 1 mm total length. This might be explained by a low gill rakers efficiency of adult anchovies to retain small prey. In the Rio de la Plata front, both the reported large biomasses of zooplankton and the observed intense anchovy feeding revealed the ecological significance of this front, especially when compared with the contiguous 'poor in food' coastal areas.

This paper reports the results of the preliminary survey of copro-necrophagous dung beetles of Brejo Novo region, Caruaru, Pernambuco, as well as some aspects of the community structure such as seasonality, diversity, equitability, richness and abundance of species. Ten samplings with intervals of 30 days and duration of 48 hours, fortnightly were done between September 2003 to July 2004. Scarab beetles were collected with 24 pitfall traps baited with two types of baits, human excrements and rotting bovine meat. A total of 1,540 individuals belonging to six tribes, 12 genera and 28 species were collected. The species Canthon af. carbonarius, Canthon chalybaeus, Dichotomius nisus, D. semisquamosus, Digitonthophagus gazella and Eurysternus hirtellus are, apparently, adapted to the studied environment. Traps baited with human excrements attracted 826 individuals and those with rotting bovine meat attracted 714 specimens. Large number of species (15) considered 'rare' occurred, being three of them 'singletons', two 'doubletons' and 10 with abundance between three and 10 individuals; 13 species were considered 'common'. Of the analyzed species, seven present generalist alimentary habits, four are strictly coprophagous and one is strictly necrophagous. Positive correlations were verified between the precipitation and the abundance of the individuals and the species richness. This preliminary survey of the dung beetles of the Brejo Novo region contributed to increase the number of species registered for Pernambuco and northeast region of Brazil.</text>
