A comienzos del siglo XXI. la relación entre las ciencias y las humanidades es entendida como una simultaneidad isomórfica. Esta idea nos lleva a ver a las ciencias y a las humanidades juntas, como implicando 'descubrimientos en conjunto', porque su mutua interrelación puede arrojar nuevos y dinámicos campos del saber en nuevos contextos. Precisamente, este es el caso de la Ecología y el Feminismo. Ambos surgieron a fines del siglo XX como consecuencia de temas políticos, económicos, sociales y culturales que ya se evidenciaban en las décadas del 60 y del 70 en el mundo angloamericano. A través de una aproximación desde la perspectiva feminista, este trabajo se centra en cómo el avance tecnológico es fuente de destrucción tanto para el medio ambiente como para los seres humanos. Además, demuestra cómo la interrelación que existe entre un espacio distópico, la memoria como una construcción pre- y post-apocalíptica y el poder ejercido a través de la opresión tecnológica por un centro de investigación multinacional, hace eclosión en la novela distópica Oryx y Crake (2003) de Margaret Atwood. En definitiva, este trabajo no sólo representa sino también critica la situación actual en la que se encuentran EE.UU. y Canadá con respecto a temas como la manipulación de genes y la destrucción de espacios naturales en nombre de la ciencia y el avance social.

Se refutan y cuestionan los razonamientos expuestos por las autoras en el artículo 'Relación de los cultivos modificados genéticamente con el ambiente y la salud de la población costarricense' publicado en esta revista por Espinoza et al. (52: 727-732, 2004). Para ello se contraponen éstos con las evidencias expuestas y analizadas tanto por científicos como por organizaciones nacionales e internacionales independientes de diverso tipo en diferentes lugares del mundo (e.g. Organización Mundial de la Salud, internacional de Consumidores, Médicos y Científicos por una Aplicación Responsable de la Ciencia y la Tecnología, Unión internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, Consejo Universitario de la Universidad de Costa Rica y el Panel de Ciencias independiente), que confirman la incertidumbre y limitaciones actuales de la ciencia en esta área, así como de los mecanismos de bioseguridad propuestos y puestos en vigor. En materias tan importantes y básicas para la supervivencia como las que nos ocupan -el ambiente, la biodiversidad y la seguridad alimentaria- no es prudente apostar a promesas basadas en la misma lógica promocionada desde hace poco más de cinco décadas por la denominada 'revolución verde'. Es necesario continuar este debate basado en el análisis holístico de los hechos, así como en razonamientos éticos, evitando caer en posiciones emocionales que llegan a confundir la realidad virtual con la verdadera realidad.Genetically modified crops: promises and good intentions are not enough (refutation to Espinoza et al. 2004, Rev. Biol. Trop. 52 (3): 727-732). The arguments presented by Espinoza et al. in their paper 'Relationship of genetically modified crops with the environment and health of the Costa Rican human population' published in this journal (Rev. Biol. Trop. 52: 727-732, 2004) are questioned and refuted. The arguments are confronted with evidence offered by scientists and national and international independent organizations around the world (e.g. World Health Organization, Consumers international, Physicians and Scientists for Responsible Application of Science and Technology, international Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the Council of the University of Costa Rica, and the independent Science Panel) showing the current uncertainty and limitations of science in this area, as well as those of proposed and applied biosafety approaches. Environment, biodiversity and food security are so important and basic matters, that there is need of serious testing, particularly when promises seem to be based on environmentally dangerous ideas promoted half a century ago by the so called 'green revolution'. Debate should continue, based on a holistic analysis of facts and with ethical reasoning, avoiding emotional positions that can confuse virtual reality with reality. Rev. Biol. Trop. 55 (2): 347-364. O industrialismo, em escala mundial, é um complexo de apropriação dos recursos sociais pertencentes ao meio-ambiente, à produção científica e ao esforço reprodutivo de sociedades integradas ou, aos mercados. Tal processo equivale à 'grande transfonmação' ou a produção em massa no mercado, que engendra um ritmo de vida dependente do 'ethos' político de um regime produtivista capaz de induzir, no quadro contemporaneo brasileiro, ao entrechoque de duas praticas relacionadas com a democracia: a primeira postula uma participação funcional reforçadora do produtivismo, e a segunda sua confluência (problemática) com culturas políticas que valorizam os processos de participação e mudança não-planejadas. O artigo discute essas questões à luz do perfil e responsabilidade de três atores sociais no Brasil (trabalhadores/capitalistas; ecologistas e comunidade científica), e lança essa 'cartografia' para cenários de reorganização societaria em fomlações industrialistas do hemisfério Norte, deixando em aberto a pergunta sobre os riscos de um comportamento reflexivo desses atores face a essa reorganização.

Ante esta problematica, es imprescindible llevar a cabo estudios que mejoren nuestra comprension sobre las relaciones planta{polinizador en cultivos agrcolas, ademas de implementar estrategias orientadas a revertir la declinacion de las poblaciones de polinizadores. De que manera el cambio climatico afectara la produccion agrcola y la seguridad alimentaria en America tropical dependera en gran medida de como las interacciones planta{polinizador se vean infuenciadas.

Este ensayo constituye un estudio preliminar de un área con pastizal natural samófilo realizado en la Estancia 'El Paralelo',Lat. 36 S.-Long. 66·17' W, Depto. Chalileo (La Pampa). Se obtuvieron datos de composición florística, cobertura, frecuencia y disponibilidad de fitomasa aérea del pastizal y también del área con 'pasto llorón' (Eragrostis curvula L.) Se evaluó también el efecto causado por un fuego accidental ocurrido en el mes de noviembre de 1988. El 'pasto llorón' tiene un crecimiento anual acumulado de 1860 KgMS/ha/año y cobertura de 50%. De todos los sectores con pastizal natural, la media pendiente presenta la mayor disponibilidad forrajera (1842 KgMS/ha) y una cobertura vegetal de 45%. En esta posición topográfica Panicum urvilleanum 'tupe' es la especie dominante. Está acompañada por Aristida sp. y Bothriochloa spriengfieldii 'penacho blanco'. Los estudios efectuados permitieron esbozar el estado de condición de los potreros con pastizal natural del establecimiento. Los resultados encontrados demuestran un bajo estado de condición del pastizal, excepto el subsector de la media pendiente cuyo estado de condición es bueno. Director: Biol. Este trabajo analiza las relaciones entre los seres humanos y su ambiente, a partir de la historia de la aclimatación y posterior invasión de conejos en Chile, constatando que, en el largo plazo, las acciones humanas tienen efectos e impactos insospechados sobre el medio natural. En efecto, si bien inicialmente los conejos fueron vistos como una oportunidad de desarrollo económico a partir del aprovechamiento de su piel y su carne, pronto esta especie se convirtió en una plaga difícil de controlar en diversas regiones del país, como Chile central, Tierra del Fuego e islas Juan Fernández. Así, con el paso del tiempo, el conejo se ha terminado por transformar en nuestro país en un verdadero 'convidado de piedra'.This work analyses the relationship between human beings and their environment taking into consideration the adjustment and eventual invasión of rabbits in Chile. It argües that in the long run, human actions have unsuspected effects upon the environment. In fact rabbits were seen initially as an opportunity for economic development because of the exploitation of their meat and skin. Later, rabbits became a plague in different áreas of Central Chile, Tierra del Fuego and Juan Fernández islands, which was difficult to control. Over the years rabbits became unwelcome guests in Chile.

Nowadays the understanding of urban parks as important elements for environmental quality and social life in large cities is relevant, because of the different ecosystem services they provide to society such as thermal comfort, carbon dioxide absorption and control noise and air pollution, protection of water resources, among others. The ecosystem services offered by urban parks provide the welfare for population; they are spaces for leisure and sports activities; besides having their relevance for the study and conservation of nature. This study aimed to conduct a literature review on the study, contributions and importance of ecosystem services in urban areas; to achieve this, scientific articles from the Web of Science database, over the past 12 years (2003-2015) were consulted, using the following keywords (in English): 'ecosystem services' and 'urban areas', 'ecosystem services' and 'urban park', 'environmental services' and 'urban park', 'environmental services' and 'city'. Few studies on ecosystem services are made in cities, mostly in natural or rural areas. The main contributions found in scientific papers highlight: studies related to characterization of biodiversity, maintenance of river sources, carbon storage, and carbon dioxide absorption, increased permeability of the soil, urban planning and sustainability, payments for environmental services, valuing landscape and cultural cities, and quality of life of population. In conclusion, it is necessary to increase efforts for a better understanding of the dynamics of urban ecosystems and their services to support better urban planning strategies with sustainability criteria.

Abstract: In the light of the encyclical Laudato Si’, this paper presents interaction and communication as essential aspects of all that exists. Humans are dialogical beings and “everything is connected”. The first part studies the theological and ethical bases of both communication and integral ecology. Everything has been created through the Word and is ordered to the affectionate and fraternal encounter. The second part asserts the need for ecological conversion and then focuses on the media. They are gifts of God that can contribute decisively to strengthening the bonds of fraternal communication and communion. However, they also present ethical challenges that must be addressed. Resumen: A la luz de la encíclica Laudato Si', este artículo presenta la relación y la comunicación como elementos constitutivos de la realidad. 'Todo está conectado'. Todo el ecosistema es una red de relaciones y el hombre, imagen del Dios trinitario, es un ser dialógico y relacional. La primera parte del artículo estudia las bases teológicas y éticas de la comunicación y de la ecología integral. Todo ha sido creado a través de la Palabra y ha sido ordenado al encuentro fraterno y comunicativo. La segunda parte afirma la necesidad de conversión ecológica y después se centra en los medios de comunicación social. Estos son dones de Dios que pueden contribuir grandemente al fortalecimiento de los vínculos de comunicación y comunión. Sin embargo, también presentan desafíos éticos que es preciso abordar.

Resumen: El objetivo del artículo es reflexionar sobre los retos y desafíos epistemológicos de la interculturalidad y la descolonialidad. Por eso el trabajo identifica y define las diferentes perspectivas epistemológicas y metodológicas que han emergido desde la mitad del siglo XX: la multidisciplinariedad, la pluridisciplinariedad, la interdisciplinariedad y la transdisciplinariedad. También se aborda la globalización desde un pensamiento fronterizo enfocado en la “epistemología del sur”. Como resultado, se concluye que es necesaria una ecología de saberes para crear “otros mundos posibles” que nos permitan lograr los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) pactados por los Naciones Unidas. Palabras clave: interculturalidad, ubuntu, globalización, descolonialidad, epistemología. Resumo: O objetivo do artigo é refletir sobre os desafios epistemológicos da interculturalidade e da descolonialidade. Por isso o trabalho identifica e define as diferentes perspectivas epistemológicas e metodológicas que surgiram desde meados do século XX: multidisciplinaridade, pluridisciplinaridade, interdisciplinaridade e transdisciplinaridade. Aborda-se a globalização partir dum pensamento de fronteira focado na 'epistemologia do Sul'. Como resultado, conclui-se que uma ecologia de saberes é necessária para criar 'outros mundos possíveis' que nos permitem alcançar os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) acordados pelas Nações Unidas. Palavras-chave: interculturalidade, ubuntu, globalização, descolonialidade, epistemologia. Abstract: The objective of this article is to reflect about the epistemological challenges of interculturality and decoloniality. For this reason, the work identifies and defines the different epistemological and methodological perspectives that have emerged since the mid-twentieth century: multidisciplinarity, pluridisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. It addresses the globalization from aborder thinking focused on “south epistemology”. As result, it is concluded that ecology of knowledge is necessary to create “other possible worlds” with the aim to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agreed by the United Nations.
