The global climatic change could cause, in some places, appearance of meteorological phenomena considered rare. If we understand the effect of these phenomena on birds we can understand how birds respond to weather changes. We report here the effect of a severe snowfall on hummingbird activity, flower abundance and hummingbird-plant interaction in a temperate forest of central Mexico. During our study we registered 1 hummingbird species (Hylocharis leucotis) and 7 plant species (Fuchsia thymifolia, F. microphyla, Salvia amarissima, S. elegants, Cestrum roseum, Penstemon campanulatus and Lonicera mexicana). Before the sudden climatic phenomena we registered 66 records of hummingbirds, 8 700 flowers, and 6 hummingbird visits to flowers. During the phenomena, there were zero hummingbird records, 160 flowers and zero visits. A month after the event there were 67 hummingbirds records, 1 825 flowers and 13 visits. Hummingbird activity recovered rapidly after the snowstorm, but 6 of 7 plants species lost all their flowers, except for L. mexicana, which received all hummingbird visits a month after the climatic event.El cambio climático global podría causar fenómenos meteorológicos considerados como raros. Si entendemos el efecto de estos fenómenos en las aves podríamos comprender como las aves responden a este tipo de cambios en el tiempo. Aquí documentamos el efecto de una nevada severa sobre la actividad de colibríes, la abundancia floral y la interación colibrí-planta en un bosque templado del centro de México. Durante nuestro estudio registramos 1 especie de colibrí (Hylocharis leucotis) y 7 especies de plantas (Fuchsia thymifolia, F. microphyla, Salvia amarissima, S. elegants, Cestrum roseum, Penstemon campanulatus y Lonicera mexicana). Antes de la nevada registramos 66 avistamientos de colibríes, 8 700 flores y 6 visitas de colibríes a las flores. Durante el fenómeno hubo cero registros de colibríes, 160 flores y cero visitas. Un mes después del evento climático hubo 67 registros de colibríes, 1 825 flores y 13 visitas. La actividad de los colibríes se recuperó rápido después de la nevada, pero 6 de 7 especies de plantas perdieron todas sus flores, exceptuando a L. mexicana, que recibió todas las visitas de colibríes 1 mes después del evento climático inusual.

Se analizaron mediante regresión lineal series de largo plazo de evaporación en 35 estaciones localizadas en el estado de Zacatecas, México , con el objetivo de identificar sus tendencias y calcular sus anomalías. Adicionalmente, se analizaron mediante análisis fractal los espectros de potencia de las anomalías de evaporación con el fin de identificar sus frecuencias importantes y su posible conexión con fenómenos periódicos. El presente estudio se realizó en la provincia de Chimborazo-Ecuador con el propósito de establecer un escenario de cambio climático para el año 2050, a fin de implementar políticas públicas en el Plan de Desarrollo y Ordenamiento Territorial que ayuden a reducir la vulnerabilidad de la población ante los riesgos climáticos. Para ello, se analizó información a nivel de subcuencas hidrográficas con una resolución espacial de 1 km2 en un escenario de radiación de 2,6 RCP, corresponde a un Modelo Global de Circulación (GCM) denominado MIROC-ESM-CHEM. En la definición del escenario, se utilizó información a una escala 1:4000000 más detallada generada por WorldClim ya que la información climática disponible de modelos como PRECIS, TL959 generados para el Ecuador, tienen un detalle muy bajo con una grilla de 50 km2, escala 1:282 800 000, que para el caso de la provincia es una gran limitante considerando que de la información se obtuvo resultados para nivel de subcuencas. Al comparar el escenario actual y el de cambio climático para el año 2050, en los datos se observó variaciones climáticas principalmente reducción de la precipitación en las subcuencas: río Namangoza, río Patate y río Chambo; así como, un incremento de la temperatura mínima y máxima en la subcuenca río Namangoza.

La zonificación ecológica es una herramienta fundamental para el manejo del territorio y de los ecosistemas. El modelo de Holdridge es un sistema de zonificación ecológica que identifica unidades bioclimáticas (zonas de vida) en base a variables climáticas, latitud, y altitud. Argentina presenta una gran variabilidad ambiental, sin embargo, actualmente carece de una zonificación ecológica objetiva y detallada. Aunque existen numerosos trabajos que delimitaron el territorio desde otros enfoques, escalas y detalle descriptivo (e.g. Cabrera, 1971, 1976; Viglizzo et al. 2005; Morello et al., 2012)El propósito de este proyecto de tesis es identificar y cartografiar las unidades bioclimáticas de Argentina a partir del modelo ecológico de Holdridge como herramienta de aplicación para cuantificar la diversidad ecológica del país, comprender el marco ambiental donde se desarrolla el uso del suelo y la gestión de la conservación de la biodiversidad, y evaluar las posibles consecuencias del cambio climático.

Con el objetivo de determinar la diversidad y funcionalidad de la macrofauna edáfica como indicador biológico de la salud del suelo y el efecto de prácticas de manejo en sistemas productivos de Moringa oleifera Lam., se llevó a cabo un estudio en predios de la Universidad Nacional Agraria, Nicaragua. Los ensayos tuvieron una duración de nueve meses, en los que se implementaron prácticas de manejo agroecológico y manejo convencional. La macrofauna edáfica fue muestreada mediante la metodología desarrollada por el Programa Internacional Biología y Fertilidad del Suelo Tropical. Se realizó identificación taxonómica a nivel de phylum, clase, orden y familia; así como de grupos funcionales: detritívoros, ingenieros del suelo, herbívoros y depredadores. La prueba no paramétrica Kruskal-Wallis se aplicó para determinar diferencias estadísticas en la variación de la densidad por taxón y grupo funcional por sistema de manejo. La densidad de individuos resultó estadísticamente diferente (p < 0,05) entre sistemas de manejo a nivel de clase, orden y familia. La diversidad fue mayor en conversión agroecológica, y se destacó una mayor equitatividad de familias. Los grupos funcionales fueron diferentes entre sistemas, con dominancia de los ingenieros del suelo (64,22 %) en conversión agroecológica, y de los detritívoros (74,19 %) en manejo convencional. Hubo una asociación entre las prácticas de manejo con la densidad y la diversidad de la macrofauna del suelo; y se identificaron los organismos Formicidae y Termitidae y del Coleoptera, que interactuaron con M. oleifera en diferentes estados de desarrollo. El número de unidades taxonómicas constituyó un indicador que permitió distinguir entre los sistemas de manejo, la salud del suelo y la dinámica de transformación de las propiedades químicas, físicas y biológicas de cada sistema.

Para determinar el aumento de los niveles de empatía y percepción del riesgo del cambio climático en estudiantes universitarios de la salud se realizó un estudio cuasi-experimental. La intervención fue una estrategia educativa. Se seleccionaron por conveniencia dos grupos de estudiantes de ciencias de la salud. Los niveles de empatía se midieron con la Escala de Empatía Médica de Jefferson versión estudiantes y de la Encuesta de percepción sobre riesgo al cambio climático como una amenaza para la salud humana se midieron dos ítems: índice de percepción de riesgo y conocimiento sobre los efectos en la salud por causa del cambio climático. Se encontraron diferencias entre pre y post-test (p < 0,05). En el pre-test ambos grupos presentaron niveles de empatía altos con un promedio de 107. Para el post-test, el grupo experimental, presentó un aumento estadísticamente significativo en los niveles de empatía. Se establecieron correlaciones significativas entre empatía global y factores de empatía: cuidado con compasión y toma de perspectiva; y correlación significativa entre el factor de empatía Cuidado con compasión y Conocimiento sobre los efectos en la salud por el cambio climático. Este trabajo evidenció como una estrategia educativa puede fomentar la empatía en estudiantes de la salud.

La incidencia y prevalencia de las enfermedades alérgicas en la infancia han aumentado considerablemente en los países desarrollados en los últimos 20-30 años. Se ha demostrado el papel de los alergenos inhalantes en la exacerbación de las alergias respiratorias. Son los ácaros del polvo doméstico los principales agentes causales. La contaminación ambiental y los cambios climáticos, entre otros factores, han contribuido al incremento de estas enfermedades, dentro de las cuales las más frecuentes en pediatría son las alergias respiratorias y a su vez dentro de estas últimas la rinitis alérgica y el asma bronquial. En este artículo se realiza una revisión sobre rinitis alérgica, asma bronquial y valores de IgE en niños, con énfasis en la epidemiología y factores desencadenantes.

La relación entre los seres humanos y el ambiente ha variado desde los tiempos remotos hasta la actualidad, y se ha hecho crítica a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. La niñez es el grupo más vulnerable, a causa de su inmadurez anatomofisiológica y su dependencia psicosocial. La contaminación del aire y del agua, las emisiones químicas, el agotamiento del ozono y las consecuencias del cambio climático son los principales problemas relacionados con la salud. Los pediatras deben estar plenamente informados al respecto, puesto que los niños tienen una especial sensibilidad, vulnerabilidad y, en algunos casos, una oportuna capacidad de recuperación ante la acción de diferentes tóxicos ambientales. Nos propusimos revisar en diferentes bases de datos los planteamientos más recientes sobre los efectos de diferentes contaminantes ambientales que amenazan la salud y el desarrollo futuro de los niños.The relationship between human beings and the environment has changed from ancient times to the present, being more critical since the second half of the 20th century. Children are the most vulnerable group due to their anatomic and physiological immaturity and psychosocial dependence. Air and water pollution, chemical emissions, ozone depletion and the consequences of climate change are the main problems related to it. Pediatricians should be duly informed about it because children have special sensitivity, vulnerability and, in some cases, timely recovery capability in the face of the action by different environmental toxics. We intended to review in a number of databases the most recent statements on the effects of various environmental pollutants that threaten health and future development of children.

La distribución geográfica y la variación estacional de muchas enfermedades infecciosas son la primera evidencia de su relación con el tiempo y el clima. El propósito del presente trabajo es ofrecer una información básica sobre la compleja dinámica entre el clima y algunas enfermedades infecciosas Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica que explica los mecanismos del cambio y variabilidad climática sustentados esencialmente en el calentamiento global. Se exponen los efectos e impactos en algunas de las más importantes enfermedades infecciosas, donde se espera un probable incremento de las mismas. Finalmente se muestran algunos resultados publicados de la experiencia cubana en este campo.Geographical distribution and seasonal behavior of infectious diseases are evidence of the relationship between variability and climate change and human health. The purpose of the present article is to provide basic information about the complex dynamics of climate and health. A review of literature was performed to explaining of the mechanisms of climate variability and change especially in relation to global warming. Their effect and health impact upon some of the most important infectious diseases are illustrated, and may be probability increase of them. Finally, the Cuban experience from published articles is shown.

Los fenómenos de la desertificación y la degradación de las tierras, la contaminación de las aguas, los suelos y la atmósfera, la pérdida de la diversidad biológica, el agotamiento de la capa de ozono, la deforestación, el recalentamiento del planeta y otros, han conducido a una encrucijada de la existencia humana. El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar la adecuación de los principales sistemas de producción ante las afectaciones del cambio climático en Cuba y los resultados de fincas diversificadas que emplean alimentos locales y se han convertido en un recurso, por su contribución para mitigarlo. Se exponen las principales afectaciones ocurridas por el cambio climático y la caracterización del período 2000-2010 en la ganadería en el país. También se presentan los principales retos de los sistemas agroforestales y los resultados productivos de cuando se emplean recursos fitogenéticos herbáceos y arbóreos en diferentes sistemas de producción ganadera, así como las propuestas de sistemas resilientes de alimentación basados en los recursos fitogenéticos forrajeros herbáceos y arbóreos que deben utilizarse como resultado de la innovación tecnológica en las áreas ganaderasThe phenomena of desertification and land degradation, water, soil and atmospheric contamination, loss of biological diversity, depletion of the ozone layer, deforestation, planet warming and others, have led to a crossroads of human existence. The objective of this work is to analyze the adaptation of the main production systems before the affectations of climate change in Cuba and the results of diversified farms which use local feedstuffs and have become a resource, for their contribution to mitigate it. The main affectations occurred due to climate change and the characterization of the period 2000-2010 in the livestock production of the country are presented. The work also shows the main challenges of agroforestry systems and the productive results of using herbaceous and tree plant genetic resources in different livestock production systems, as well as the proposals of resilient feeding systems based on forage herbaceous and tree plant genetic resources which should be used as a result of technological innovation in livestock production areas
