Captures were undertaken on a smallholding and a small farm situated near the hostels, monthly between January/2001 and December/2003 with automatic light traps (ALT) in pigsty, hen-house and veranda of a domicile at the two sites, and in peridomicile of the small farm also with black/white Shannon traps. With the ALT a total of 87,224 phlebotomines representing 19 species and also two hybrids of Nyssomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva) and Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto) and two anomalous specimens were captured. The standardized index species abundance was for Ny. intermedia = 1.0 and Ny. neivai = 0.935. The highest frequencies of the smallholding occurred in the pigsty, the Williams' mean/capture for Ny. intermedia being 63.7 specimens and for Ny. neivai 29.2, and on the small farm, in the hen-house, Ny. intermedia 402.6 and Ny. neivai 116.2. A total of 863 phlebotomines (Ny. intermedia: 75.4%; Ny. neivai: 24.3%) were captured with black/white Shannon traps; females of both species being predominant in the white trap. The high frequencies of Ny. intermedia and Ny. neivai, both implicated in CL transmission, indicate the areas presenting risk of the disease.</text>

The sandflies were captured with the use of light traps, CDC (Center Control Disease) type, installed at the edge and in the center of the forest, at the height of 1.5 meter, being there from 6 p.m. up to 6 a.m., once per month, during a year time. An amount of 1,356 specimens from 23 species, which 21 belonged to genera Lutzomyia and two belonged to genera Brumptomyia, were captured. In the Sacavém forest reserve, 1,061 specimens were captured, resulting in a capture effort of 2.5 individuals/hour/trap, most of them L. longipalpis (44.8%), followed by L. antunesi (36.4%), L. sordelli (5.9%), L. flaviscutellata (3.9%) and L. whitmani (2.1%). The highest concentrations of species (11) and individuals (60.1%) occurred during the rainy period. In the Itaqui forest reserve, 295 specimens were collected and the capture effort was 0.2 individuals/hour/trap, most of them were L. flaviscutellata, (58.6%), L. sordelli (14.6%), L. longipalpis (7.1%), L. evandroi (6.4%), L. longipennis (3%), L. trinidadensis (2.7%) and L. whitmani (1.7%).

<text>During an inspection in plastic houses in Sapopema, Paraná, 90% of tomato plants showed leaf abnormalities, probably associated with herbicide toxity. However, virus like symptoms developed in selected hosts after mechanical inoculatation. RT-PCR reactions using primers for an internal region within the movement protein gene of TMV and ToMV resulted in the amplification of a 409 bp cDNA fragment only by TMV primers. Deduced amino acids showed 100% identity when compared to TMV movement protein and 94% with ToMV. The RT-PCR protocol was efficient for quick and conclusive determination of virus species. The virus was purified and a polyclonal antiserum was raised for future surveys in tomato crops of Paraná. The partial genomic sequence obtained for TMV-Sapopema has been deposited under the accession number DQ173945, which is the first partial genomic sequence of an isolate of TMV from Brazil in the GenBank, and the first tomato virus isolate from Paraná to have some of its biological and molecular properties determined.

The behavior of Holtein x Zebu crossbreed cows was studied in silvipastoral system, taking in account the time spent by the cows in the stand up position, eating, ruminating or in inactivity, during the summer and winter times. Measures of the time spent by the cows at sunshine and under the shadow was also taken. Data from 32 cows, were collected every ten minutes, 12 hours a day (from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M.), in twelve days, six during the winter and six during the summer times. The data were analyzed through variance system and to multiple comparison among average it was used the t test of student, at the level of 5% of probability. During the winter, cows spent more time at sunshine than in summer time while in the summer the cows remained more time in the shadow mainly under the trees with big and dense crowns.
