Además de la ayuda alimentaria, los programas de atención a las familias desplazadas deben prever proyectos productivos y de educación nutricional para constituirse en alternativas exitosas.OBJECTIVES: Describe the dietary patterns and extent of access to food among families displaced by armed conflict in a locality of the Santander department of Colombia. METHODS: A descriptive study of the food consumption of 101 families living in forced displacement in the urban and suburban areas of the municipality of Girón, Santander department, Colombia. During the second half of 2003, the person in charge of the family's food preparation completed a sociodemographic survey with questions on the monthly food expenditure, where the food was bought and with what frequency, and a log of food consumption during the preceding 24 hours. The dietary pattern was established according to the frequency of food consumption and preparation through a linear regression model that used the expenditure as a dependent variable. RESULTS: Of all the families, 34.7% reported not having access to food shopping and 13.9% received food donations. The average expenditure on food was 0.52 of the standard minimum wage. The only variable associated with expenditure was the number of family members working and contributing to the family budget (P = 0.037); for each working member, expenditure rose by increments of 0.07 of the minimum wage (95% confidence interval: 0.004- 0.149). No association was found between the length of time of the displacement and the food expenditure. The overall quality of the diet was deficient given that the recommended allowances of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products were not being met. CONCLUSIONS: Food insecurity encompassed 95.0% of the study families, even though they had been living as refugees for three years. The diet quality was substandard. The principal causes were low household income and a lack of knowledge regarding how to choose nutritionally superior foods. In addition to food donations, relief programs caring for displaced families should provide practical and educational training on nutrition, and thus, successful alternatives.</text>

<text>In order to evaluate certain bio-ecological aspects of Aedes aegypti in the urban ecosystem in Merida State, adults of the species were captured and larva counts were made in 30% the housing units in localities of this region. It was found that positive larva deposits were greater inside housing units than outside, and this occurred both in the rainy season and the dry season, with no statistical difference between periods (X2=0.57, p< 0.05) during the three years studied. Selectivity of Aedes aegypti in relation to type of deposit area according to the larva sample was highest in old tires, followed by water tanks and water deposits, and in third place flower pots, vases, junk piles, and sheet metal containers. The capture of adults with human bait both inside and outside housing units revealed higher levels of insect (mosquito) bites in the afternoon and inside housing units, with an average of 27.2 insect bites per man hour between 7 and 8PM followed by 15.3 insect bites per man hour between 6 and 7 PM. Insect collection while insects were at rest was preferable in order to detect the presence of Aedes aegypti than capture on humans which demonstrated that insect larva counts are not the most precise indicators of insect density. Larva counts recovered relatively quickly due to the existence of stored water in zones where there are water supply difficulties and deficient water health maintenance, both of which are key factors in the epidemic occurrence of dengue in the State over the years studied. It was also found that this disease has not suffered changes in its behavior, and remains in the same areas and in the same types of water deposits even after the strong selective pressure exerted by the use of chemical insecticides applied in this region of the country.</text>

The cerrado species showed a tendency to higher contents of epicuticular waxes and lower proportion of hydrocarbons than the forest species. The C29 and C31 alkanes were dominant in all species and the average lenght of the hydrocarbon chains were around 30,5 in the forest species and from 28,5 to 31,3 in the cerrado species. <text>Historians recognize Entre Rios province as the birthplace of colonization but it is also there that, since the beginning of the twentieth century, agricultural cooperatives providing important services to partners in sourcing, marketing and industrialization have developed. Cooperative aid have brought about a more rational use of the land, increased turnover, improved product quality, efficient use of capital and rising demand due to expanding markets, different services that each farmer by itself could not reach. This article proposes to analyse the trajectory of a rice producers cooperative -founded in the 1970's - located in the town of Villa Elisa, Entre Rios province, which in greater or lesser degree has been giving these benefits and ranks nowadays as the third national rice exporter and occupies the first place in cooperative management. As well as economic issues, particular attention will be given to the institutional articulation of the company and the introduccion of organizational changes.

<text>Cyathea delgadii Sternb. Cyathea delgadii Sternb. is a tree fern that grows in primary and secondary forests from Norhteastern to Southern Brazil. This study discusses the population structure and development of the sporophytic phase (caudex growth, frond production, phenology of spore production) of C. delgadii in a secondary forest in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, based on observations of 41 plants during a 13 month period. The species had an aggregated spatial distribution pattern and higher frequency of smaller individuals, indicating high potential for population regeneration. On average, the caudex of plants grew 4.65 cm year-1, and the highest growth rates were recorded for taller plants. The similar frond production rate (5.75 fronds year-1) and senescence rate (4.92 fronds year¹) reflect the capacity to maintain a stable number of fronds. Only a few plants formed fertile fronds, while spore production and liberation occur in an asynchronous pattern.</text>

Studies were conducted at Mina Recreio, Butiá, RS, on floristic and phytosociological aspects in a natural grassland area laying on a coal bank and in surface coal mining areas which had beem naturally reclaimed. Two main vegetation units denominated differential units a (AXONOPUS - ANDROPOGON) and B (AXONOPUS - PIPTOCHAETIUM), both of them with their respective sub-units of possibly associated species, were detected in the natural grassland area. The gradual spatial variation, detected in the natural grassland area, is mainly characterized by the set of conditions associated with land declivity and water table depth. In both surface coal mining areas II and III the vegetation units were not clearly defined, but were characterized as primary areas. The vegetation unit PIPTOCHAETIUM - AXONOPUS PURPUSII was detected in area II and a vegetation unit PIPTOCHAETIUM - CYNODON in area III. A greater floristic similarity was verified between area II and natural grassland than between area III and natural grassland. The species detected in mining areas present certain degree of pioneerism and tolerance in relation to the set of extreme conditions which they faced, and should, therefore, be the first to be tested on mining area recomposition.</text>
