<text>The diversity and distribution of appendicularians on the continental shelf and upper part of the oceanic sea in the southern Gulf of Mexico is analyzed here for the first time. Samples were collected in September 2003 using a fine mesh net. Twenty species were identified, of which Fritillaria venusta and Pelagopleura oppressa are first records for the Gulf of Mexico. Oikopleura species occur throughout the area, with greatest abundances in the upwelling waters of the inner shelf off Yucatán and Campeche. The greatest abundances of Fritillaria species and of the other genera were recorded in the mid, outer shelf, and oceanic areas of Campeche and Tabasco that are influenced by continental water discharges and an oceanic gyre. Diversity and abundance varied in differing directions, with high abundance and low diversity characterizing the costal areas and low abundance and high diversity in the mid, outer shelf, and oceanic areas. The distribution of appendicularian species appears to be influenced by upwelling currents, gyres, water column depth, continental water discharges, salinity, and temperature. However, it could be assumed that the reasons behind these physical environmental factors include the food supply, a short life cycle, and high reproductive efficiency, factors that are commonly associated with distribution.

A cross-sectional study was carried out with 294 pregnant teenagers. Data were analyzed using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Pregnant teenagers whose families earned less than one minimum wage were more likely to have low weight (OR = 5.8; 95%CI: 1.97-16.8). Age under 15 years was associated with a fourfold increase in low gestational weight. Arm and calf circumference greater than 24cm and 32cm, respectively, were associated with a 94% reduction in low gestational weight (arm circumference: OR = 0.1; 95%CI: 0.0-0.2) (calf circumference: OR = 0.1; 95%CI: 0.0-0.2). In conclusion, low income and young age were associated with low gestational weight. Arm and calf circumference correlated with maternal weight.</text>

The individual-based models (IBM) are quite flexible, allowing a detailed inclusion of parameters with greater biological meaning, therefore being more realistic than classical population models, which are too constrained inside mathematical formalisms. The present paper discuss seven reasons for IBM to be adopted in simulation studies inside Ecology: (1) ecological systems are inherently complex, being not open to a complete formal mathematical analysis; (2) population processes are emergent outputs from the interactions among individuals and the environment; (3) predictive power; (4) the evolutive view as a definitive guide for ecological studies; (5) individuals are discrete entities; (6) interactions are localized in space and (7) individuals present differences among them.</text>

Countries in the region are at risk of a variety of climate change related problems: rising sea levels, diminishing potable water supplies, forest res, intense storms and ooding, heat waves and the spread of diseases. These disasters are occurring more frequently in the region and will likely increase in intensity also. The armed forces in the region are the only government departments with both the capacity and the manpower to respond to these massive catastrophes. Military support to civilian authorities will be required more frequently and under more severe conditions as climate change conditions worsen.</text>

<text>This report shows the phlebotomine vectorial role in the endemic cutaneous leishmaniasis situated in the middle and north-eastern region of the São Paulo, Brazil. Analysis of information encloses a sandfly man-biting fauna of four different patches of residual forest. So, using the human-bait and Shannon trap for a period of one year we have caught 16,869 sandflies. The predominance of Lutzomyia intermedia (85,6%) was clear. Moreover, the low density of Lutzomyia whitmani and Lutzomyia pessoai and their epidemiological implications at present and in the past are discussed. Information about the daily activity of some species is given and we emphasize for the first time, the diurnal activity of Lutzomyia firmatoi in the São Paulo State.</text>
