<text>The salinity is considered the major constraint to agriculture worldwide, constituting a limiting factor to growth, plant development, agricultural productivity and soil deterioration. In this direction an experiment was carried out during the period October/2009 to February/2010, in greenhouse conditions in Areia county, Paraiba State, PB, Brazil, in order to evaluate the effects of water saline on initial growth of papaya Hawaii in non-saline substrate with bovine rich biofertilizer. The substrate was material of the first 0.10 m of a Regolitic Entisol non saline. The treatments were distributed in completely randomized in six replication using the factorial design 5 x 2, corresponding to levels of irrigation water saline: 0.5; 1.0; 2.0; 3.0 and 4.0 dS m-1, in soil without and with rich biofertilizer applied to soil in liquid form one time two days before seed sowing, at level of 10% of the substrate volume. The increment of salinity water irrigation inhibited alls variables studied in papaya’s plants, but with less range in treatments with bovine biofertilizer.

The purity of the isolated compounds and their quantifications were developed using GC/FID. Chavibetol was isolated with high purity (98.7%) and mass recovery (94.6%). The mass recovery (86.4%) and purity (85.3%) of methyleugenol were lower than those of chavibetol. Both compounds were identified on the basis of spectral analysis. The results suggest that the method can provide chavibetol with high purity, mass recovery, and productivity from crude essential, which will be used in bioassays against stored insect pests.</text>

Spatial distribution patterns of Euglossina bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae) in the Neotropical region. Orchid bees (Apini, Euglossina) have a mainly Neotropical distribution, comprising, approximately, 200 species and five genera. Several local fauna surveys are available in the literature, but comparative studies on the Euglossina composition and distribution patterns are still scarce. The aim of this study is to analyze published data from 29 assemblages in order to understand the spatial distribution patterns of the sampled areas along the Neotropics. Ordination procedures (DCA and NMDS) were employed in order to describe the groupings of assemblages according to orchid bees occurrences. The Central America and Amazonian forests localities formed cohesive groups in both analyses, while Atlantic Forest localities were more dispersed. Areas on the eastern border of the Amazon shared characteristic of transitional areas between this sub-region and the Atlantic Forest. Moreover, analysis of variance among the first DCA axis and variables showed significant influence of latitudinal, longitudinal and rainfall gradients, as biogeographical sub-regions on Euglossina's assemblages groupings. The general pattern is congruent with previously proposed biogeographical scenarios for the Neotropical region. The DCA results also help to identify, independently, the faunal elements inherent to the different studied forested formations.</text>

The objective of this work was to evaluate the spatial variability of banana production, in function of physical and chemical variables of soil and of farm physiographic characteristics, in order to select those with the greatest potential for use in site-specific management program. One hundred thirty productive units of banana clone Williams (Cavendish AAA) distributed in four lots and tree soils units of the farm were georeferenced. The bunch weight and root functionality were determined for each plant, as well as 35 physical and chemical soil variables. The spatial variability of the production was evaluated in function of these soil variables, using four different strategies: axes as covariates; both physic and chemical soil properties as covariates; analysis made by individual plot; and analysis made by soil unit. The individual plot study was the best strategy to model the spatial variability of banana production. This analysis model allowed to set soil variable groups which were significantly correlated and precisely explained more than 69% of the bunch weight inside the plots. These groups of variables are the ones with higher potential for the establishment of a site-specific management program.</text>
