En Costa Rica, en el periodo2000- 2004 se liberaron tres variedades de frijol granorojo: Bribri (2000), Cabécar (2003) y Telire (2004). El procesode generación y difusión de estas variedades, se efectuóbajo la estrategia de Fitomejoramiento Participativo (FP). Enel estudio se entrevistaron 201 productores de cuatro localidadesy 16 caseríos de la Región Brunca. El estudio considerólos años 2002, 2003 y 2004. En el periodo agrícola 2004el 70% del área de siembra estuvo cubierta con las variedadesBribri (41,8%), Cabécar (24,3%) y Telire (3,3%). El aumentodel área de siembra con variedades mejoradas redujoel uso de variedades criollas, según los productores esto sedebe a que las variedades criollas tienen un menor rendimientoy mayor susceptibilidad a las enfermedades. En el periodo2004, el índice de aceptabilidad para la variedad Bribri fue de51,8%; este índice considera la adopción bajo los criterios delagricultor y el área sembrada con la variedad. Las localidadescon niveles más altos de adopción, corresponden con las demayor cantidad de agricultores organizados en Asociacionesde Productores; estas asociaciones son las que han participadomás activamente en los procesos de FP. Apartir de esta organizaciónse derivan los factores que determinaron la adopciónde la variedad Bribri, como es la participación en días decampo, días de evaluación de germoplasma y liberación devariedades de frijol. Se concluye de este estudio que existeadopción de la variedad Bribri y aceptación temprana de lasvariedades Cabécar y Telire

El desarrollo de variedades con alta productividad y adaptadas a condiciones de pequeño productor, se ha realizado en Costa Rica desde 1995 a través de fitomejoramiento participativo y es una de las estrategias más económicas para enfrentar los problemas del cultivo. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue describir el proceso de desarrollo de la variedad Diquís de Phaseolus vulgaris y sus principales caracteres. La variedad Diquís fue liberada el 17 de julio del 2009 en El Águila, Pérez Zeledón, Costa Rica. Su nombre proviene del lenguaje Boruca, un grupo indígena de Costa Rica que estuvo asentado en el valle de Diquís o valle de Térraba-Sierpe, localizado en la costa del Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica. Este cultivar provino del Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) en Colombia, donde se originó en el 2001, derivada del cruzamiento SEA 15 / MD 23-24 // Tío Canela 75 / G 21212 y codificada como la línea SER 28. En Costa Rica se evaluó en 28 ensayos y 32 validaciones, durante el periodo 2003 al 2008. Su potencial de rendimiento fue de 1907 kg.ha-1 en la fase experimental y de 1467 kg.ha-1 en la fase de validación en campos de productores. La arquitectura de este cultivar es de tipo IIb, erecta con guías cortas. Presentó resistencia al virus del mosaico común del frijol (BCMV) (gen dominante I) y al virus del mosaico dorado amarillo del frijol (BGYMV) (marcador W12). Además, resistencia intermedia a la mancha angular (grado 6). Su grano es rojo pequeño brillante y presentó poca decoloración (1,3%) bajo condiciones lluviosas durante la cosecha. Este cultivar fue liberado para uso comercial el 17 de julio del 2009, en El Águila de Pérez Zeledón, San José, Costa Rica; en forma conjunta por el Instituto Nacional de Innovación y Transferencia en Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA) y la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR). Por sus características, Diquís se considera un cultivar adecuado para los diferentes sistemas de producción en Costa Rica.

Some basics aspects on the ecology of the nocturnal gecko Phyllodactylus reissi from Parque Nacional Cerros de Amotape (Tumbes, Peru) are described. This species used rock boulders (57,4%) and trees (31,9%) as microhabitats primarily, exhibiting a nocturnal activity pattern, with a peak between 2100-2200 hours, remaining active until midnight. Body temperature (mean 24,4 ºC) was correlated with both air and substrate temperature, with the last variable affecting in higher degree (47%) the body temperature of this species. The slightly high body temperature of Phyllodactylus reissi, compared to other Phyllodactylus geckos, could be related to nocturnal microhabitat use and diurnal retreat site selection. More studies on lizard ecology from this endangered ecosystem are needed.

I studied activity patterns, microhabitat use and thermal ecology of a small-wild population of the Loma’s lizard, Microlophus tigris in Parque Las Leyendas Zoo, from April to October of 2006. Microlophus tigris individuals were active in a variety of microhabitats, from bushes and vegetation debris to prehispanic bricks (adobes) and litter, during the hottest hour of the day. Mean body temperature (29,4 ºC) was similar to body temperature observed in a natural population from Lomas de Lachay, although in Parque de Las Leyendas, substrate temperature was higher than air temperature, probably related to thermal properties of materials used as microhabitats and to seasonal differences. We encouraged the Zoo to takes conservation measures to protect this endangered wild population of lizard in Lima city.

El objetivo del estudio fue determinar las especies de plantas arvenses y de la entomofauna beneficiosa presentes en los sistemas silvopastoriles (SSP) evaluados en el occidente de Cuba, así como su interrelación ecológica en esos agroecosistemas ganaderos. Para ello, durante un año se muestrearon ocho SSP compuestos por asociaciones de leucaena más gramíneas pratenses. El muestreo de las arvenses se realizó al inicio y al final del experimento; mientras que la recolección de los insectos beneficiosos se hizo cada 15 días, con vista a su identificación en cada caso. Se encontró un total de 34 arvenses y 79 especies insectiles beneficiosas. De las primeras, cinco se consideran como posibles hospedantes de 27 insectos beneficiosos que se capturaron (11 depredadores, 12 parasitoides y 4 polinizadores). De ellos, sobresalieron en el primer grupo cinco coccinélidos como biorreguladores de Heteropsylla cubana (principal plaga de la leucaena a escala mundial) y un antocórido controlador de trips; mientras que en el segundo se destacó un ichneumónido y varios cálcidos que regulan a Spodoptera frugiperda; y en el tercero se distinguió la abeja Apis melifera como polinizador. Se demostró que es necesario determinar cuáles son las especies de arvenses que conviene que estén presentes en los SSP con el fin de potenciar los procesos ecológicos que en estos suceden, sobre la base de la agrodiversidad, el área que cubren los pastos predominantes y el manejo de estos sistemas productivos; ello contribuiría a propiciar la regulación de las principales plagas asociadas y a mantener el equilibrio biológico, como ocurrió en los cuartones evaluados, con vista a alcanzar la sostenibilidad económica y ambiental de dichos agroecosistemas en el tiempo.

Objetivo: Caracterizar la biodiversidad y determinar su grado de complejidad, como base para el manejo agroecológico de plagas en una entidad campesina.Materiales y Métodos: En la finca en estudio, perteneciente al municipio Colón, provincia Matanzas, se cuantificó la biodiversidad durante un año. Se aplicaron los índices de Margalef y Shannon (H´) y se utilizó la metodología de Vázquez y Matienzo (2010) para determinar el grado de complejidad de la biodiversidad en la finca, que considera cinco componentes: nociva, funcional, introducida funcional, auxiliar y productiva.Resultados: Se obtuvo una riqueza de especies agrupadas en 25 familias, que se destacaron por su uso como frutal, maderable, forraje y alimento animal. Además, se constató el escaso número de plantas bioplaguicidas, de barreras y cercas vivas, así como la poca complejidad de la biodiversidad funcional y la introducida funcional, lo que contribuye a la incidencia y al inadecuado manejo agroecológico de las plagas en el sistema productivo. Finalmente, la unidad se calificó de medianamente compleja (31 %).Conclusiones: La biodiversidad estuvo representada, principalmente, por especies de las familias Poaceae y Fabaceae, seguidas de Anacardiaceae, Boraginaceae y Rutaceae. El predio se clasificó como medianamente complejo. Las componentes de la biodiversidad más determinantes de ese comportamiento fueron la funcional, la introducida funcional y la nociva, lo que repercutió negativamente en el manejo de las plagas.

La investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar la relación existente entre la cantidad de ganado bovino y las emisiones de metano, en un periodo de estudio de diez años, permitiendo dar respuesta a la problemática planteada referente a la magnitud de emisiones de CH4 en la provincia de Manabí. El estudio se sustentó en las guías y directrices emitidas por el panel intergubernamental de cambio climático, 2006, utilizando el software IPCC 2006 versión 2.10. Los resultados demostraron que las emisiones de CH4 son considerablemente elevadas, 531,68 Gg. de CH4, destacando las emisiones por fermentación entérica, con aproximadamente 50 veces más metano que las emisiones del manejo de estiércol. Asimismo, el ganado no lechero es responsable de un mayor número de emisiones de metano frente al ganado lechero, para el caso de la fermentación entérica, con 287,724Gg. de CH4, mientras que para el manejo del estiércol, las mayores emisiones son generadas por el ganado lechero, con 7,217 Gg. de CH4. Se aceptó la hipótesis planteada de que existe un aumento en las emisiones de metano, a causa del incremento de la población de ganado bovino.

El alto nivel de exposición y vulnerabilidad a los desastres de origen natural en la región Latinoamericana y el Caribe, han generado en no pocas ocasiones un impacto directo en la movilidad humana. El desplazamiento por desastres, incluido el desplazamiento transfronterizo, es una realidad en la región, donde muchos países se han valido de respuestas ad hoc, políticas públicas y legislación en materia migratoria para abordar este complejo fenómeno, sobre el cual no existe aún un marco jurídico internacional vinculante, especialmente desde el punto de vista de la admisión y estancia de personas afectadas y desplazadas directamente por desastres. El articulo aborda cómo los países de la región Latinoamericana y el Caribe han utilizado los principios de la cooperación sur-sur, basados generalmente en consideraciones humanitarias y la solidaridad internacional para responder a estos fenómenos, en especial desde el estudio de caso de los procesos regionales de consulta en materia migratoria.
