The porcine hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (PHEV) is classified as a member of genus Betacoronavirus, family Coronaviridae, sub-family Cornavirinae, and order Nidovirales. PHEV shares the same genomic organization, replication strategy, and expression of viral proteins as other nidoviruses. PHEV produces vomiting and wasting disease (VWD) and/or encephalomyelitis, being the only known neurotropic coronavirus affecting pigs. First clinical outbreak was reported in 1957 in Ontario, Canada. Although pigs are the only species susceptible to natural PHEV infections, the virus displays neurotropism in mice and Wistar rats. Clinical disease, morbidity, and mortality is age-dependent and generally reported only in piglets under 4 weeks old. The primary site of replication of PHEV in pigs is the respiratory tract, and it can be further spread to the central nervous system through the peripheral nervous system via different pathways. The diagnosis of PHEV can be made using a combination of direct and indirect detection methods. The virus can be isolated from different tissues within the acute phase of the clinical signs using primary and secondary pig-derived cell lines. PHEV agglutinates the erythrocytes of mice, rats, chickens, and several other animals. PCR-based methods are useful to identify and subsequently isolate animals that are actively shedding the virus. The ability to detect antibodies allows producers to know the status of first-litter gilts and evaluate their risk of tier offspring to infection. PHEV is highly prevalent and circulates subclinically in most swine herds worldwide. PHEV-related disease is not clinically relevant in most of the swine-producing countries, most likely because of dams are immune to PHEV which may confer passive immunity to their offspring. However, PHEV should be considered a major source of economic loss because of the high mortality on farms with high gilt replacement rates, specific pathogen-free animals, and gnotobiotic swine herds. Thus, in the absence of current PHEV vaccines, promoting virus circulation on farms with early exposure to gilts and young sows could induce maternal immunity and prevent disease in piglets.

Nicaragua es un país con condiciones climáticas apta para la agricultura, que permiten el establecimiento de diversas hortalizas de importancia en la seguridad alimentaria. El presente estudio se realizó en el municipio de Tisma, departamento de Masaya, en el año 2016, con el propósito de caracterizar los sistemas de producción del cultivo del Tomate (Solanum lycopersicum M.) a través de la generación de información. Se aplicó una encuesta socioeconómica en donde se incorporó el manejo agronómico y fitosanitario del cultivo y postcosecha de la producción. Basado en la información obtenida, se procedió a muestrear, procesar y analizar el registro de 25 Unidades de Producción (UP), las variables se sometieron a aná- lisis univariados. Los resultados mostraron que en la mayoría de las UP predomina el sexo masculino, con edades promedios inferiores a los 40 años. Los productores son propietarios de sus UP, el nivel educativo determinó que 42.86% de los varones y 36.84% de las mujeres no lograron concluir la educación primaria. El 100% de los productores emplean semilla certificada de tomate, el manejo fitosanitario del cultivo se realizó empleando compuestos convencionales (Agroquímicos), recurriendo a la compra de productos selectivos, ya que el 96% reconocen las principales plagas y enfermedades que afectan este rubro, siendo la mosca blanca (Bemisia tabaci) la principal problemática, en la etapa de crecimiento del cultivo. En el manejo postcosecha un pequeño porcentaje desinfecta cajillas y medios de transporte, esto debido a que la producción tiene como destino el mercado local y es comercializado como hortaliza fresca.

Exceptuando el área de la Isla de San Andrés y Providencia, el Caribe colombiano ha sido caracterizado como una zona de baja probabilidad de formación y desarrollo de tormentas tropicales, de acuerdo con la Agencia para la Atmósfera y el Océano de los Estados Unidos (NOAA). Esto no significa que tales eventos no se han presentado en la costa Caribe colombiana; Irene en 1971, Joan en 1988 y Bret en 1993, son algunos ejemplos de tormentas que cruzaron la costa colombiana en el pasado. El aumento en el número e intensidad de las tormentas que han pasado por el Mar Caribe en la última década pone de manifiesto la necesidad de comenzar a evaluar los efectos de estos fenómenos en la zona costera para el fortalecimiento de programas de alerta, donde el oleaje y la marejada ciclónica representan los efectos oceánicos más importantes al paso de un evento de esta naturaleza. En el presente trabajo se hace una revisión y análisis de las tormentas que pasaron por el Caribe colombiano desde 1900, sus características y la amenaza costera que representan. Se establece que los últimos 17 años han sido muy activos y se observa como la elevada actividad ciclónica del año 2005 coincide con un aumento sustancial de la temperatura global. Expertos en calentamiento global coinciden que la intensidad o el número de las tormentas en el Atlántico podrían aumentar por efectos del incremento de la temperatura superficial de océano

En ambas comunidades se elaboran máscaras en madera y artesanías en palma de iraca, respectivamente, las cuales han persistido a los retos de la globalización. Sin embargo, la capacidad de estos artesanos ha sido perturbada por la dinámica económica basada en el mercado, que les exige niveles de producción y utilización excesiva de recursos naturales, conduciéndolos a una ruptura entre el patrimonio cultural material, la memoria tecnológica y el balance ecológico de recursos naturales utilizados. El modelo se construye a partir de datos cualitativos obtenidos mediante instrumentos participativos sistematizados en una matriz de análisis estructural, para dar cuenta de las relaciones de incidencia y dependencia de las dimensiones del modelo. Los resultados se sintetizan en un instrumento que permite tomar decisiones sobre la productividad cultural, tecnológica y ecológica de la producción artesanal.An eco-technological model was used to determine aspects of artisanal production in the rural communities of Galapa and Usiacurí, located in the Department of Atlántico, Colombia. Galapa produces wooden masks and Usiacurí, handcrafts made with the Iraca palm. Both communities are facing the challenges of globalization and the capacity of their artisans has been affected by market economy dynamics, which demand high levels of production and excessive use of natural resources. This has led to a rupture between material cultural patrimony, technological memory, and ecological balance of natural resources used. The model draws from qualitative data obtained through participatory instruments, which are then systematized in a structural analysis matrix to determine the impact and inter-dependency of the different aspects covered in the model. Based on the results obtained, a tool was designed for decision-making processes regarding the cultural, technological, and ecological productivity of handcraft production.

l número de la revista que en esta ocasión ponemos en manos de la comunidad, tiene un significado especial para todos en el Instituto de Investigación de la Escuela Profesional de Turismo y Hotelería de la USMP. En primer lugar, porque con este número celebramos los 20 años de la fundación de la revista, que publicó su primer número en enero del año 2000, bajo la dirección de quien fuera su recordado director, el Dr. HenriqueUrbano, y que a la fecha continúa siendo la única revista académica especializada sobre estos temas en el Perú.En segundo lugar, porque a partir de este número, la revista ya no tendrá una periodicidad anual, sino semestral, lo que implica no solo un nivel mayor de eficiencia en la gestión de los manuscritos que nos remiten los autores, sino una publicación más pronta y oportuna de los resultados de las investigaciones. En tercer lugar, porque convencidos de que todos debemos participar en la lucha contra el calentamiento global mediante la reducción del consumo de recursos materiales y de los procesos implicados en su producción, a partir de este número, la revista ya no se publicará en formato impreso, sino en formato digital. Estas tres circunstancias no solo nos alegran, sino que nos comprometen aún más con nuestro esfuerzo por hacer de la revista, un medio relevante para difundir los resultados de las investigaciones más recientes en materia de turismo y patrimonio cultural.

Introducción. Las rickettsias son bacterias patógenas usualmente transmitidas por ectoparásitos, como garrapatas, piojos o pulgas. En la última década se presentaron tres brotes de rickettsiosis con casos fatales en la región noroccidental de Antioquia y en un municipio limítrofe de Córdoba. Objetivo. Describir la ecología y la epidemiología de las infecciones por Rickettsia spp. en el Urabá antioqueño. Materiales y métodos. Se obtuvieron muestras de 354 roedores y se recolectaron 839 ectoparásitos de estos en los municipios de Apartadó, Turbo y Necoclí. Asimismo, se obtuvieron 220 sueros humanos. Estas muestras fueron estudiadas por reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) e inmunofluorescencia indirecta (IFI) para la detección de infección por rickettsias. Resultados. Por IFI se detectaron anticuerpos antirickettsias en 130 (43 %) de los roedores y en 53 (24%) de los sueros humanos estudiados. Además, se amplificaron secuencias del gen gltA específicas del género Rickettsia en 23 (6,8 %) muestras de hígado de roedores, las cuales mostraron una similitud del 98,7 % con R. prowazekii. Una secuencia de gltA obtenida de larvas de garrapatas del género Amblyomma sp., tuvo una identidad mayor de 99 % con las secuencias de R. tamurae. Conclusión. Estos resultados demuestran la circulación de rickettsias en roedores, ectoparásitos y humanos en los municipios estudiados. doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.7705/biomedica.v33i0.735

A partir de materiales artísticos que denominamos poéticas del fin, se pensarán, mediadas por la mirada, problemáticas aún latentes en la subjetividad con relación a un inminente desastre nuclear (con efectos como el cambio climático, la expulsión de material radioactivo en las plantas nucleares, y la tensión beligerante desde los inicios de la Guerra fría hasta la incursión de nuevos países en el catálogo de potencias nucleares), que se relacionan con lo que llamaremos escatología atómica, en referencia al oxímoron de un principio y final del universo profundamente entrelazados. Son precisamente este tipo de representaciones las que nos permiten indagar en este artículo sobre cuestiones inter-artísticas: la representación del paisaje en la inminente posthumanidad en el cine y la literatura y sus procedimientos (filme-ensayo y poética literaria) y la perspectiva histórica de los tiempos últimos (apocalipsis y escatología) en relación con la catástrofe. Además de la cuestión del montaje —fundamento de la teoría de un cine conceptual— y la “mirada contemplativa”, desde donde se opera el corpus conformado por el filme-ensayo Homo Sapiens (2016), de Nikolaus Geyrhalter, y las poesías y ensayos de Thomas Merton, en Incursiones en lo Indecible (1967). Palabras e imágenes que posibilitan un instante de diálogo reflexivo con el espectador, y atraviesan otros diversos materiales (Schiller, Dostoievski, Simmel, Woolf, Bresson, Tarkovski), que, como serie, se pondrán en perspectiva desde el vínculo de las artes visuales y la representación literaria.

En el ámbito de la agricultura sostenible, el uso de fertilizantes orgánicos es una opción viable ante el impacto ambiental causado por los fertilizantes convencionales. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de abonos orgánicos como fuente de N sobre el crecimiento, rendimiento, calidad y atributos morfológicos en frutos de tomates uva. Se evaluaron siete tratamientos de fertilización, los cuales consistieron de una solución nutritiva inorgánica (solución Steiner) y diferentes mezclas de varios fertilizantes nitrogenados de origen animal certificados por OMRI a una concentración del 100 y 120%. Los resultados mostraron que los tratamientos orgánicos T5 y T6 presentaron similar crecimiento que el tratamiento convencional (T7). El índice SPAD fue 13.8% mayor en los tratamientos orgánicos respecto al tratamiento inorgánico T7. En los parámetros de producción de fruto, el tratamiento orgánico T5 asemejó al tratamiento convencional en el número de frutos por racimo, pero en peso fresco de fruto, rendimiento y diámetro longitudinal el tratamiento convencional superó a los tratamientos orgánicos por un 21, 31.6 y 5.8%; mientras que, el diámetro transversal fue similar en los tratamientos T1 y T7. La firmeza de fruto fue mayor en los tratamientos orgánicos T1 y T4, superando al tratamiento inorgánico por 10.3 y 6%, respectivamente. Los sólidos solubles totales fueron mayores en el tratamiento orgánico T4, superando al tratamiento inorgánico T7 por un 18%. El tratamiento inorgánico T7 presentó mayores valores en la mayoría de los atributos morfológicos, aunque los efectos fueron estadísticamente similares a los de T3, T5 y T6.
