People living in homeless shelters are at higher risk of infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) compared to the general population. The purpose of this study was to identify shelter characteristics that may be associated with higher transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional assessment of five congregate shelters in Rhode Island. Shelter residents 18 years old and older were tested for SARS-CoV-2 from April 19–April 24, 2020. At time of testing, we collected participant characteristics, symptomatology, and vital signs. Shelter characteristics and infection control strategies were collected through a structured phone questionnaire with shelter administrators. Results: A total of 299 shelter residents (99%, 299/302) participated. Thirty-five (11.7%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Shelter-level prevalence ranged from zero to 35%. Symptom prevalence did not vary by test result. Shelters with positive cases of SARS-CoV-2 were in more densely populated areas, had more transient resident populations, and instituted fewer physical distancing practices compared to shelters with no cases. Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 prevalence varies with shelter characteristics but not individual symptoms. Policies that promote resident stability and physical distancing may help reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Symptom screening alone is insufficient to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Frequent universal testing and congregate housing alternatives that promote stability may help reduce spread of infection. This article reflects on responses to homelessness during Covid-19 in the City of Tshwane, describing and reflecting upon it from the perspective of a researcher-theologian as well as activist-urbanist. It employed two lenses in its reflection: Petrella’s notion of the ‘undercover liberation theologian’, as well as what is known as deliberative public administration theory, as possibly complementary approaches. It traces ways in which people of faith/theologians participated in the City of Tshwane through means other than explicit theological discourse. It implies that such engagement was not less theological but perhaps more strategic, describing that task of the undercover liberation theologian as that of making space, making plans, making known and making change. Ultimately, it calls for a subversion of suspect models of theological education, suggesting that it is in losing ourselves in the messiness of public processes and multiple solidarities with the poor, that the unfree might experience freedom, and liberation theological goals might find concrete expression. Se estableció un experimento totalmente al azar con siete inóculos de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) denominados: Las Campesinas (LC), Carlos Rojas (CR), Paso Ancho (PA), El limón (EL), Cerro del Metate (CM) (consorcios nativos), una cepa comercial (INIFAP®), y un control sin HMA, en una mezcla de arena-suelo esterilizada y bajo condiciones de invernadero. Semillas de guayaba fueron germinadas en arena esterilizada y posteriormente, las plántulas fueron trasplantadas a bolsa de vivero con una mezcla de arena-suelo esterilizada, donde fueron inoculadas con los diferentes tratamientos de HMA. Después de 125 días, se realizó un muestreo destructivo donde se registró, la altura de planta, el diámetro del tallo, el área foliar, la materia fresca y seca de cada órgano. Así como, la relación materia seca de la parte aérea/materia seca de la raíz, el índice de robustez y el índice de Dickson, como variables de calidad de planta. Cómo variables microbiológicas se determinó, la micorrización radicular y la cantidad de esporas en el sustrato. Los resultados mostraron un efecto diferencial en el crecimiento en las plantas de guayaba, cuando se inocularon con algún consorcio nativo de HMA. Entre los diferentes consorcios evaluados, EL promovió el mejor desarrollo y calidad de planta, y fue donde se alcanzó la mayor colonización y producción de esporas en el sustrato. La mayor tasa de mortalidad se registró en las plantas sin HMA, o inoculadas con el inóculo INIFAP. Los porcentajes de colonización fueron superiores al 60%, excepto en el consorcio CM. Por lo anterior se puede mencionar que, el uso de HMA podría ser una práctica recomendable para el cultivo sustentable de guayabas en invernadero. The aim of this study was to examine the horizontal distribution of Cladocera in a lake connected to a river during low and high water phases and the abiotic factors that determine variation in their populations. Microcrustaceans were collected in integrated samples at 40 sites distributed on a lake. The mean abundance of Cladocera was around five times higher in the low water phase than in the high water phase. Only populations of Bosmina hagmanni Stingelin, 1904 and Bosminopsis deitersi Richard, 1895 predominated in the low water phase, while in the high water phase, B. hagmanni, Ceriodaphnia cornuta f. rigaudi (Sars, 1896) Diaphanosoma spinulosum Herbst, 1975 and Moina micrura Kurz, 1875 predominated at some sampling stations. The majority of cladoceran species showed an aggregated distribution in the low water phase, except B. longirostris and D. fluviatile and, B. longirostris, the only ones which presented a uniform distribution pattern in the high water phase. Most of the aggregates of cladoceran species predominated in both the dry and rainy periods on the east side of the lake due to intense easterly wind. Some cladoceran populations formed isolate aggregates in other parts of the lake and near the lake-river connection site. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the variables phosphorus, nitrogen and suspended matter (eutrophic conditions) determined distinct patterns of horizontal distribution in some cladoceran populations at some stations in the low water phase, while in others, the patterns of horizontal distribution were determined by environmental conditions as alkalinity, pH, oxygen, depth and water transparency. In the high water phase, CCA revealed that phosphorus and water transparency were positive determining factors in the distribution of some cladoceran species, while alkalinity, depth and suspended matter were negative. Our study showed that the distribution of cladoceran species may vary somewhat between the two distinct water phases depending on the micro-scale variation patterns of environmental factors.
