Foi implantada uma horta orgânica de ervas medicinais na comunidade da Barra (Muriaé, MG) com o objetivo de inclusão social de pessoas carentes ao permitir acesso ao tratamento por fitoterapia. O início das atividades foi em janeiro de 2006, com a escolha das espécies, obtenção de mudas e instalação da horta. As 40 espécies selecionadas, sob manejo agroecológico, eram indicadas com terapêutica aos 25 principais problemas de saúde levantados na comunidade. O formato didático da horta, representando o corpo humano, serviu como referência às indicações de uso de cada espécie. A horta foi mantida até meados de 2012 na Barra e transferida ao IFMURIAÉ, em área de cultivo agroecológico, no Bairro Sofoco, onde se realizam as práticas do curso de técnico em agroecologia. A comunidade da Barra auxiliou desde as primeiras ações, sendo atuante na colheita das plantas medicinais. As plantas coletadas foram levadas a sala anexa à Paróquia local onde se realizou o processamento pós-colheita e o preparo de fitoterápicos. A dispensação dos preparados foi em outra sala cedida pela Paróquia. As formas fitoterápicas disponibilizadas à população foram de uso interno (erva seca, tintura, xarope) e externo (creme, gel, pomada), sendo as mais procuradas: gel, tintura e xarope. De 2006 a 2012 foram 32.400 atendimentos, média de 385 pessoas/mês. O sucesso do projeto se reflete no aumento do número de espécies utilizadas, passando de 40 espécies em 2006 para 170 espécies em 2012, dentre elas: alecrim de jardim (Rosmarinus officinalis), alfavaca (Ocimum basilicum), amora (Morus alba), arnica brasileira (Solidago microglossa), calêndula (Calendula officinalis), camomila (Matricaria chamomilla), capim gordura (Melinis minutiflora), cavalinha (Equisetum arvense), chapéu-de-couro (Echinodorus grandiflorus) e espinheira santa (Maytenus aquifolium).

A agricultura convencional destaca-se como uma das atividades mais impactantes ao meio ambiente. O presente trabalho conta com pesquisa bibliográfica de campo sobre técnicas sustentáveis utilizadas na produção de hortaliças, com a intenção de aplicá-las na Horta da Escola Estadual Deputado Adão Pretto. Iniciou-se com a análise, adubação e manejo do solo, em seguida plantio de hortaliças, através do estudo da época de plantio, das especificidades e com a valorização da cultura e do saber da comunidade local. A partir da interação com a comunidade, resgatou-se técnicas milenares e de princípios ecológicos: calendário lunar, armadilhas construídas em materiais recicláveis, utilização de plantas com função de controle biológico e estudo sobre plantas companheiras, antagônicas e indicadoras. Realizou-se o plantio e a colheita de hortaliças, sendo acrescentadas à merenda da escola. Todo o projeto foca na produção orgânica e na aproximação com a ecologia, com respeito ao conhecimento e à vida. Durante a V Feira Regional de Ciências, Matemática e Mais Saberes, os alunos utilizarão, para a apresentação, cartazes, banners, amostras do solo da horta da escola (com destaque para os horizontes), amostra das armadilhas ecológicas desenvolvidas e relatório com fotografia do trabalho realizado pelos autores do projeto com crianças das escolas municipais que integram a comunidade escolar, visando difundir os princípios da agricultura orgânica e de base ecológica.

ResumoA agricultura urbana e periurbana (AUP) vem sendo praticada em diferentes espaços, contribuindo para a melhoria da saúde nas comunidades e ambientes mais saudáveis. Objetivando identificar significados e repercussões da prática da AUP em Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS), enquanto uma atividade de Promoção da Saúde (PS), e em que medida sua dimensão terapêutica a caracteriza como uma atividade alinhada às práticas integrativas e complementares, foi realizado um estudo transversal com abordagem qualitativa no município de Embu das Artes, SP. Da análise, emergiram as seguintes categorias: concepção de saúde, resultados na saúde, resgate de práticas e hábitos tradicionais e reorientação dos serviços de saúde. Identificou-se a estreita ligação entre a prática das hortas e as diretrizes e campos de ação da PS como: criação de ambientes saudáveis, reforço da ação comunitária, desenvolvimento de habilidades pessoais, estímulo à autonomia e empoderamento e demandas por reorientação dos serviços. As atividades de horta instituídas nas UBS se mostraram uma estratégia de implementação das práticas integrativas e complementares (PIC). Conclui-se que as atividades de cultivo nas hortas comunitárias mostram-se como práticas promotoras da saúde que integram elementos fundamentais das PIC.

A agricultura urbana tem alcançado significativo avanço no Brasil enquanto alternativa de desenvolvimento local. Especificamente no município de Sete Lagoas-MG, se consolidou como referência internacional em hortas urbanas comunitárias com um histórico de 34 anos. No mesmo município, observa-se a existência de uma Associação de Proteção e Assistência aos Condenados (APAC), que se apresenta enquanto um método de recuperação do indivíduo baseado na reinclusão econômica e social, com baixos índices de reincidência ao crime em comparação aos sistemas tradicionais. Neste contexto, o presente relato de experiência teve por objetivo geral apresentar as contribuições da implementação de uma horta comunitária em uma APAC. Para tal, propôs-se por meio de uma pesquisa qualitativa participante e uso de questionários, diário de campo e fotografias, analisar os benefícios da horta comunitária para 30 recuperandos, durante os 17 meses de projeto. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam para um projeto de extensão que serviu de alternativa para geração de renda, avanços sociais e psíquicos como o reforço do convívio social, e diversidade alimentar e nutricional. Tais resultados mostram o quanto a combinação dessas vertentes tem potencial para auxiliar na reintegração social e econômica dos egressos do sistema prisional.

O Pensamento Complexo enseja a discussão sobre a multidimensionalidade da agricultura e suas interfaces com a Educação Ambiental e com a Educação em Saúde a partir da percepção de atores sociais de uma escola e de uma unidade de extensão pertencentes à Rede Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. Considerando a preocupação crescente com as questões ambientais e a promoção de hábitos alimentares adequados e saudáveis e a complexidade envolvida, sugerem-se as atividades agrícolas como instrumento pedagógico que facilita o exercício do pensamento complexo e da transdisciplinaridade, assim como a percepção da alimentação e do meio ambiente como temas transversais que se comunicam. O entendimento dos entraves e das possibilidades para a inserção destas atividades na escola urbana contemporânea requer a ponderação de aspectos individuais e sociais. Com essas perspectivas, as hortas escolares são re-qualificadas para o espaço urbano com base nos princípios da agricultura urbana agroecológica.

O artigo baseia-se em pesquisa que busca identificar parâmetros para hortas escolares. Sob a ótica da Complexidade, da Sociologia das ausências, da Agroecologia e da Agricultura urbana, realizou-se Análise textual discursiva de experiências com hortas escolares de diferentes regiões do Brasil e de uma experiência emblemática de exercício de práxis para a estruturação físico-pedagógica da horta em escola pública urbana. Correlaciona-se a saúde do escolar e do agricultor nas atividades agrícolas, apontando negligências. Se um objetivo da horta escolar é a construção de conceito amplo de alimentação saudável, esse deve pressupor um sistema produtivo igualmente saudável. A atenção à proteção e à segurança do escolar na horta pode contribuir para dar visibilidade das condições de trabalho do agricultor, sendo um parâmetro relevante para a Educação alimentar e nutricional. Sugere-se a adequação de materiais e procedimentos aos escolares nas hortas.

O cultivo doméstico de hortaliças e hortas comunitárias ganhou importância como uma política alternativa de redução da pobreza e melhoria das condições alimentares das famílias no Brasil desde o final do século passado. As experiências brasileiras foram relatadas em diferentes tipos de publicações científicas, mas até o momento, esses resultados não foram avaliados. Assim sendo, publicações científicas brasileiras sobre o tema foram buscadas nas páginas www.google.com.br, www.scielo.com.br, www.periodicos.capes.gov.br e na plataforma Lattes do CNPq para essa avaliação. Os resultados mostraram que a maioria das publicações estavam disponíveis gratuitamente. O número de publicações aumentou entre 1996 e 2009 e a maioria delas foi publicada em Encontros e Congressos. O cultivo de hortaliças contribuiu para aumentar o bem-estar da população. No entanto, diversas dificuldades foram relatadas, sendo as mais importantes a falta de organização social e a falta de acesso a assistência técnica, capital, terra e água. Até o momento, a maioria desses projetos foi de curta duração (menos de três anos). Assim sendo, é necessário que pesquisas multidisciplinares e de longo prazo sejam conduzidas a fim de que sejam melhor avaliados e compreendidos os benefícios e dificuldades dos projetos e as formas encontradas para superar essas dificuldades.Growing vegetables in backyards and in community gardens gained importance as an alternative policy for the reduction of poverty and the increasing of household food intake since the final years of the late century in Brazil. The Brazilian experiences have been reported in different scientific publications but until now, there has not been an attempt to evaluate those results. For that purpose, Brazilian scientific publications were sought in the sites www.google.com.br, www.scielo.com.br, www.periodicos.capes.gov.br and in the Lattes platform from CNPq. The results showed that the majority of publications were available to download free. The number of publications increased between 1996 and 2009 and most of them were published in Congresses and Meetings. Vegetable cultivation contributed to increase of the welfare of population. Nonetheless, several difficulties were reported: chiefly among these, the lack of social organization, lack of access to technical assistance, capital, land and water. Until now, the majority of these projects have been of short duration (less than three years); therefore it is necessary to carry out long term researches in order to evaluate strategies for overcoming these difficulties.

Abstract Background The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic threw the world into turmoil during the first half of 2003. Many subsequent papers have addressed its impact on health service utilization, but few have considered palliative (hospice) care. The aim of the present study was to describe changes in hospice inpatient utilization during and after the SARS epidemic in 2003 in Taiwan. Methods The data sources were the complete datasets of inpatient admissions during 2002 and 2003 from the National Health Insurance Research Database. Before-and-after comparisons of daily and monthly utilizations were made. Hospice analyses were limited to those wards that offered inpatient services throughout these two years. The comparisons were extended to total hospital bed utilization and to patients who were still admitted to hospice wards during the peak period of the SARS epidemic. Results Only 15 hospice wards operated throughout the whole of 2002 and 2003. In 2003, hospice utilization began to decrease in the middle of April, reached a minimum on 25 May, and gradually recovered to the level of the previous November. Hospices showed a more marked reduction in utilization than all hospital beds (e.g. -52.5% vs. -19.9% in May 2003) and a slower recovery with a three-month lag. In total, 566 patients were admitted to hospice wards in May/June 2003, in contrast to 818 in May/June 2002. Gender, age and diagnosis distributions did not differ. Conclusion Hospice inpatient utilization in Taiwan was indeed more sensitive to the emerging epidemic than general inpatient utilization. A well-balanced network with seamless continuity of care should be ensured.

The COVID-19 pandemic influenced the normal course of clinical practice leading to significant delays in the delivery of healthcare services for patients non affected by COVID-19. In the near future, it will be crucial to identify facilities capable of providing health care in compliance with the safety of healthcare professionals, administrative staff and patients. All the staff involved in the project of a COVID-free hospital should be subjected to a diagnostic swab for COVID-19 before the beginning of healthcare activity and then periodically in order to avoid the risk of contamination of patients during the process of care. The modifications of various activities involved in the process of care are described: outpatient care, reception of inpatients, inpatient ward and operating room. For outpatient care, modality of appointment procedure, characteristics of waiting room and personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare professionals and administrative staff are presented. Reception of inpatients shall be conditional on a negative swab for COVID-19 obtained with a drive-in procedure. The management of the operating room represents the most crucial step of the patient's care process. The surgical team should be restricted and monitored with periodic swabs; surgical procedures should be performed by experienced surgeons according to standard procedures; surgical training experimental treatments and research protocols should be suspended. Adequate personal protective equipment and measures to reduce aerosolization in the operating room (closed circuits, continuous cycle insufflators, fume extraction) should be adopted. A surge in hospital admissions was observed in Japan in late March 2020, and the incidence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) temporarily reduced from March to May as a result of the closure of host and hostess clubs, shortening the opening hours of bars and restaurants, and requesting a voluntary reduction of contact outside the household. To prepare for the second wave, it is vital to anticipate caseload demand, and thus, the number of required hospital beds for admitted cases and plan interventions through scenario analysis. In the present study, we analyzed the first wave data by age group so that the age-specific number of hospital admissions could be projected for the second wave. Because the age-specific patterns of the epidemic were different between urban and other areas, we analyzed datasets from two distinct cities: Osaka, where the cases were dominated by young adults, and Hokkaido, where the older adults accounted for the majority of hospitalized cases. By estimating the exponential growth rates of cases by age group and assuming probable reductions in those rates under interventions, we obtained projected epidemic curves of cases in addition to hospital admissions. We demonstrated that the longer our interventions were delayed, the higher the peak of hospital admissions. Although the approach relies on a simplistic model, the proposed framework can guide local government to secure the essential number of hospital beds for COVID-19 cases and formulate action plans.
