This feature of endothelial cells, along with their polarized secretory machinery, makes them the second major contributor, after platelets, to the particulate secretome in circulation. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) produced by the endothelial cells mirror the remarkable molecular heterogeneity of their parent cells. Cargo molecules carried by EVs were shown to contribute to the physiological functions of endothelium and may support the plasticity and adaptation of endothelial cells in a paracrine manner. Endothelium-derived vesicles can also contribute to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease or can serve as prognostic or diagnostic biomarkers. Finally, endothelium-derived EVs can be used as therapeutic tools to target endothelium for drug delivery or target stromal cells via the endothelial cells. In this review we revisit the recent evidence on the heterogeneity and plasticity of endothelial cells and their EVs. We discuss the role of endothelial EVs in the maintenance of vascular homeostasis along with their contributions to endothelial adaptation and dysfunction. Finally, we evaluate the potential of endothelial EVs as disease biomarkers and their leverage as therapeutic tools. ABSTRACT Approximately 224 campesino farming organizations currently exist in Mexico that directly export their coffee, sporting certification seals of solidarity-based and organic agricultural practices. Beyond the advantages this social process has brought to its affiliates, little attention has been directed toward those organizations that are outside of these commercialization tools. What situations do they face? What are their internal organizational processes, and their relations with local development agents? Our questions focus on the area of influence of the city of Yajalón. We begin based on analysis of one of the region’s oldest Technical Consulting Offices (DCT for its initials in Spanish) which attends to one of the highest numbers of coffee growers. We explain how the organizations that remain outside of Fair Trade (FT) emerged and how they develop, as a way of explaining the emergence of new forms of intermediation and rural organization in the current era. The main concern in this regard relates to the selection of populations based on the stage of their adaptation to the domiciliary environment or to the formation of artificial biocenoses that have natural foci, and which, consequently, mean that these diseases can become urbanized. The establishment of the synanthropy mechanisms based on biogeographical information, the evolution of the species and the human casuistic are here discussed from this viewpoint. Emphasis is given to the arthropod vector of the disease in present and past times. The interspecific relations between man and insects through the associative character of vetorial species are examined with regard to this point. The epidemiological significance of this concept lies in the types of human exposure to disease and the identification of the attributes involved in these infections. Finally, emphasis is given to domiciliation as a biological phenomenon together with intrinsic factors of populations and extrinsic factors of environment, these last including anthropic influences. A fauna culicídea da área de estudo apresentava relativa riqueza, com espécies de valor epidemiológico, como o Anopheles darlingi, além de outras com potencial na veiculação de arbovírus.The damming of Paraná River for the construction of Porto Primavera Hydroelectric Power Plant, between the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Midwestern Brazil and São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, has changed the ecological relationships in the area. The objective of the study was to describe the fauna that can be potential vectors in this reservoir, 2 km away from its right bank, in Bataguassu, Mato Grosso do Sul, before flooding. Mosquitoes were monthly captured in different environments from July 1997 to November 1999. During this period 16,553 adult specimens and 1,795 immature forms were collected with richness of 86 different species of adults and 44 different species of immature forms. The fauna presented a richness that included species of epidemiological importance, as Anopheles darlingi and other mosquitoes with potential for arbovirus transmission. Esta exclusividade praticamente se estendeu aos locais de coleta situados em campo aberto.This paper deals with the investigation on the composition and stratification of the Phebotominae activity developed in patch and clear areas of high agricultural activity. The employment of a CDC light trap proved to be a useful tool in determining the local faune. Thirteen species of sandflies and a total of 5,423 individuals were caught. The catch places situated in the ecotone were the ones in which the results reached their best, being outstanding for Psychodopygus intermedius, Lutzomyia migonei and L. fischeri. Thereby, data lead us to believe they have acrodendrophilous habit. On the other hand, when the global results were gathered according to male and female categories, the first one proved to be predominant. In the analysis of seasonal distribution for the three species cited, it was clear that the high-activity peaks were bi- and tri-modal for different seasons. P. intermedius was almost the exclusive sandfly caught at ground level in the Autumn season. This exclusiveness has practically extended itself to the catch places situated in open field. (1976), has now been confirmed by the demonstration of its high endophilic ability and by the use of human residences for shelter. Populations such as Lutzomyia migonei and Pintomyia fischeri were also present in that environment, though their low densities registered during this investigation could be an indication of their poor ability to overcome the barriers raised by the artificial environment. An objective epidemiological analysis based on the variables here given showed that human infection takes place in the extraforest environment, and the principal vectorial function falls, without doubt, on P. intermedius.A tendência invasiva de Psychodopygus intermedius ao ambiente domiciliar, observada inicialmente por Forattini e col. (1976), foi agora confirmada através de comprovação da sua elevada capacidade endófila e uso da habitação humana como abrigo. Populações como Lutzomyia migonei e Pintomyia fischeri também estiveram presentes naquele ambiente, porém suas baixas densidades assinaladas nesta investigação poderão indicar pouca capacidade para vencerem as barreiras impostas pelo ambiente artificial. Uma análise epidemiológica objetiva, baseada nas variáveis incluídas, demonstrou que a infecção humana ocorre em ambiente extraflorestal, cuja função vetorial principal recaiu sobre P. intermedius. A análise final revelou ter esse flebotomíneo atividade noturna nos dois ambientes. Contudo, houve divergência quanto ao pico de atividade máxima que oscilou entre 20 e 02 horas. Persistiu também a sua predominância no ambiente extraflorestal. Por outro lado, uma acentuada preferência pelo homem parece ter influenciado sua dispersão, pois demonstrou ser ubiquitária. A importância do evento reside na possibilidade de haver uma estreita associação alimentar Ps. intermedius-Homem. Subsequente, a infecção leishmaniótica poderá ocorrer ao nível do domicílio.The daily activity of Psychodopygus intermedius was measured for the first time, within and outside of a residual forest in the Ribeira Valley, S. Paulo State, Brazil. The results showed nocturnal activity in both environments, with different times of maximum activity occuring between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. However, the most intense activity continued to take place outside the forest. A strong preference for humans seems to have contributed to Ps. intermedius' ubiquitous distribution. The importance of this fact lies in the possibility of there existing a close feeding association Ps. intermedius - Man. Hence cutaneous leishmaniasis infection may take place in the household environment.
