As observações levadas a cabo em um galinheiro experimental mostraram que Psychodopygus intermedius tem a capacidade de nele abrigar-se. Para se chegar a este resultado, a metodologia utilizada consistiu na coleta total diurna e exame do estado de alimentação e digestão sangüínea dos Ps. intermedius como parâmetro da sua maior ou menor permanência no ecótopo estudado. Além disso, observou-se paralelamente, os tempos para o repasto sangüíneo, digestão completa, oviposição, sobrevivência e cópula sob a influência direta dos fatores físicos naturais. A importância epidemiológica dos resultados reside em novas elucidações experimentais sobre a viabilidade da transmissão da leshmaniose tegumentar ocorrer em ambiente domiciliar.Observations carried out in experimental hen-houses showed that Psycihodopygus intermedius are able to take shelter in them. The methodology consisted in making daytime catches and examining the feeding and blood digestion states, in terms of the time spent in the ecotope. The times of blood meals, complete digestion, oviposition, survival and mating under the direct influence of natural physical factors were also calculated. The epidemiological importance of the results consists in the new experimental evidence of the viability of leishmaniasis cutaneous transmission taking place within household environments.

Apresentam-se os resultados das coletas extradomiciliares de mosquitos Culicidae no Vale do Ribeira, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. As observações foram levadas a efeito visando obter informações que esclareçam o mecanismo de transmissão de encefalite por vírus ocorrida em caráter epidêmico na região. Com o emprego de várias técnicas, foram feitas coletas em áreas com aspectos variáveis em relação à conservação do ambiente. Fundamentalmente, a diferenciação baseou-se em áreas alteradas, com matas residuais e ocorrência de casos de encefalite, e áreas conservadas, com matas primárias e sem a presença da doença, até o momento. Foram obtidos dados que sugerem possível associação entre a ocorrência da virose e o comportamento de Aedes serratus, Aedes scapularis e Culex (Melanoconion) sp. Admite-se também a possível participação de representantes de Limatus e Psorophora, embora provavelmente de maneira variável e menos intensa do que a dos anteriores. A possível ocorrência de ciclos prolongados de baixa densidade daqueles mosquitos na zona florestal da escarpa serrana, poderá explicar o possível papel de barreira que a Serra de Paranapiacaba e do Mar desempenham para a propagação da epidemia em direção ao planalto do Estado de São Paulo.This paper presents the results of out door catches of Culicidae mosquitoes performed in the Ribeira Valley, State of S. Paulo, Brazil, where an outbreak of encephalits occurred in 1976 and 1977. These entomological investigations were made using several techniques for collecting mosquitoes, including human bait. Several places were chosen considering the environmental aspects related to human activities. In regions where high agricultural activities predominate and the primary forest was reduced to remaining spots, large numbers of Aedes serratus, Aedes scapularis and Culex (Melanoconion) sp. were caught. These mosquitoes were scarcely found in primary forest regions where no human cases of encephalitis occurred. These aspects suggest their participation in virus transmission. Beside this, other species, mainly Limatus and Psorophora, may possibly act as vectors, although with less epidemiological significance. It was noted that the scarcity of Aedes in the forest of the 'Serra do Mar' system may be a cyclic phenomenon, as was pointed out in other investigations. This circunstance may explain the apparent barrier role to the epidemic that this mountain system seems to fulfill.

This report shows the phlebotomine vectorial role in the endemic cutaneous leishmaniasis situated in the middle and north-eastern region of the São Paulo, Brazil. Analysis of information encloses a sandfly man-biting fauna of four different patches of residual forest. So, using the human-bait and Shannon trap for a period of one year we have caught 16,869 sandflies. The predominance of Lutzomyia intermedia (85,6%) was clear. Moreover, the low density of Lutzomyia whitmani and Lutzomyia pessoai and their epidemiological implications at present and in the past are discussed. Information about the daily activity of some species is given and we emphasize for the first time, the diurnal activity of Lutzomyia firmatoi in the São Paulo State.

Observou-se o ciclo diário da atividade culicídea em ambiente primitivo das florestas perenifólias higrófilas da planície, compreendendo tanto a quaternária como a de transição, do Sistema da Serra do Mar, no Vale do Ribeira, Estado de São Paulo (Brasil). Em cada floresta foram realizadas capturas mensais de 25 horas ininterruptas com o emprego de isca humana, bem como a utilização de armadilha tipo Shannon operadas dentro e fora do ambiente florestal. Registrou-se a dominância de An. cruzii embora não de maneira tão acentuada quanto a verificada na mata da encosta, mas que se manteve durante todos os meses do ano. Juntamente com Ae. serratus e An. bellator, esse mosquito manteve-se continuamente em atividade, na isca humana, durante todo o período das 24 horas. Cx. sacchettae e Ps. ferox revelaram ciclo nictimeral caracteristicamente noturno para o primeiro e diurno para o segundo. A influência crepuscular evidenciou-se com a ocorrência de nítidos picos endocrepusculares para An. cruzii, An. bellator e o caráter eocrepuscular para Cx. sacchettae. Aquelas duas espécies de Kerteszia confirmaram a presença de ritmo paracrepuscular. O Ae. scapularis ocorreu nas coletas efetuadas no aberto, ou seja, no meio extraflorestal onde não se registrou a presença de Ae. serratus. Comparando-se os resultados destas observações com aqueles obtidos no ambiente modificado e na mata da encosta, pôde-se traçar o perfil culicídeo dos quatro locais notando-se a ocorrência de nítida sucessão na fauna, conseqüente às alterações introduzidas pelo homem. Ae. scapularis e Cx. ribeirensis mostraram capacidade de adaptação ao ambiente humano, com a conseqüente importância epidemiológica que desse fenômeno se pode deduzir.Monthly 25-hour catches of Culicidae mosquitoes were carried out at ground level with human bait, in two primitive rain forests on plains in the Ribeira Valley, S.Paulo, Brazil. Regular simultaneous catches were made too, with Shannon traps, both within and outside wooded environments, which included quaternary and transitional forests on plains. Results obtained are presented and discussed. The An. cruzii dominance, though present, was not so remarkable as in the highland forest, previously reported on another work (1986). Nevertheless this mosquito, together with Ae. serratus and An. bellator, showed uninterrupted daily activity with regard to human bait, but with a marked increase at night for the two Kerteszia species. Both these anophelines showed a very clear peak of biting activity at the dusk crepuscular period, sustained in a significant manner outside the forest environments. At the dawn crepuscular period these two mosquitoes showed a peak too. For both crepuscular periods the occurrence of paracrepuscular rhythms including a secondary peak which immediately follows, was confirmed at the two investigation sites. Day-time activity was shown by Sabetini and Ps. ferox, while a nocturnal one was markedly shown by Cx. sacchettae with a clear eocrepuscular rhythm. Even though Ae. scapularis was not a dominant species within the forest, it was collected in significant quantity with the Shannon trap outside the quaternary forest on the plain, while Ae. serratus was found only inside woods. These results allow a comparison with others previously published in 1981 and 1986 and obtained in different Ribeira Valley environments. So it has been possible to describe culicid fauna profiles for three primitive forests, that is to say one on the highland and two on the plain, beside the patch one remaining as extensively modified land for agricultural purposes. The results showed a culicid faunistic succession where the former dominance of An. cruzii, Cx. sacchettae, An. bellator and Ps. ferox in the primitive forest environments was replaced by that of Ae. serratus, Ae. scapularis and Cx. ribeirensis. Besides this, only the two last of these were collected outside a forest environment on the modified land. So this finding allows one to draw conclusions as to the epidemiological importance of An. cruzii in primitive environments and of Ae. scapularis and Cx. ribeirensis in modified ones.

Background: The rapid progression of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its increasing burden on health systems necessitate the identification of parameters of severe infection to help in monitoring, prognoses and development of treatment algorithms. Objectives: This review aims to investigate the association of lymphocyte count, CRP, LDH, and D-Dimer with the severity of COVID-19. Methods: This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The databases of MEDLINE/PubMed, WHO-Virtual Health Library (VHL), and ScienceDirect were used for the systematic search. Random effects model was used to estimate the pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI), using OpenMeta Analyst software. Results: A total of 11 studies, with 2437 COVID-19 patients, which fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included in the meta-analysis. Abstract Background The world is facing an unprecedented outbreak affecting all aspects of human lives which is caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the virus novelty, healthcare systems are challenged by a high rate of patients and the shortage of medical products. To address an increased need for essential medical products, national authorities, worldwide, made various legislative concessions. This has led to essential medical products being produced by automotive, textile and other companies from various industries and approved under the emergency use authorizations or legal concessions of national regulatory bodies. This paper presents a narrative commentary of the available documentation on emergency use authorizations and legal concessions for medical products during COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology The basis for narrative commentary includes scientific articles published in Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and Embase databases, official publications of international organizations: Food and Drug Agency (FDA), World Health Organisation (WHO), World Bank and United Nations (UN), and national regulatory agency reports in native languages (English, German, Bosnian, and Croatian) published from November 1, 2019 to May 1, 2020. This paper focuses on three types of essential medical products: mechanical ventilators, personal protective equipment (PPE) and diagnostic tests. Evidence-informed commentary of available data and potential identified risks of emergency use authorizations and legal concessions is presented. Discussion It is recognized that now more than ever, raising global awareness and knowledge about the importance of respecting the essential requirements is needed to guarantee the appropriate quality, performance and safety of medical products, especially during outbreak situation, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Emergency use authorizations for production, import and approval of medical products should be strictly specified and clearly targeted from case to case and should not be general or universal for all medical products, because all of them are associated with different risk level. Conclusion Presented considerations and experiences should be taken as a guide for all possible future outbreak situations to prevent improvised reactions of national regulatory bodies.

The University Hospital of Salamanca, in Spain, had its first COVID-19 case on March 1st and as of May 11th, we had 1,100 positive cases. Based on the vulnerability of patients with blood cancers, on March 9th, the Hematology Department developed a protocol, amended as the new information was available, to maintain the Hematology Unit as a “free COVID-19 island.” The protocol included symptom-based surveys and screening tests to patients, caregivers, and healthcare personnel to identify early potential positive cases and prevent its spread. Between March 9 and April 28, 32 asymptomatic patients and caregivers were tested and 68 rT-PCR diagnostic assays have been performed with two positive results. A 106 healthcare workers have been tested (208 rT-PCR) and seven of them were positive. In summary, the implementation of preemptive measures after the first case appeared allowed us to be able to provide treatment to our patients.

Mycoviruses that induce hypovirulence in phytopathogenic fungi are interesting because their potential use as biological control agents of the plant diseases caused by their fungal hosts. The recently identified chrysovirus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi virus 1 (FodV1) has been associated to the induction of hypovirulence in Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, the forma specialis of F. oxysporum that causes vascular wilt in carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus). In this work, we have used confocal laser scanner microscopy and two isogenic GFP-labeled strains of F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi infected (V+) and not infected (V−) with the Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi virus 1, respectively, to analyze the effect of mycovirus FodV1 on the plant colonization pattern of its fungal host. Results demonstrate that FodV1-viral infection affects the speed and spatial distribution of fungal colonization into the plant. Initial stages of external root colonization were similar for both strains, but the virus-free strain colonized the internal plant tissues faster than the virus-infected strain. In addition, other differences related to the specific zone colonized and the density of colonization were observed between both F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi strains. The hyphae of both V− and V+ strains progressed up through the xylem vessels but differences in the number of vessels colonized and of hyphae inside them were found. Moreover, as colonization progressed, V− and V+ hyphae propagated horizontally reaching the central medulla but, while the virus-free strain V− densely colonized the interior of the medulla cells, the virus-infected strain V+ appeared mainly in the intercellular spaces and with a lower density of colonization. Finally, the incidence of FodV1-viral infections in a collection of 221 isolates sampled between 2008 and 2012 in the geographic area where the originally infected isolate was obtained has been also analyzed. The very low (<2%) incidence of viral infections is discussed here. To the best of our knowledge, this work provides the first microscopic evidence about the effect of a hypovirulence-inducing mycovirus on the pattern of plant colonization by its fungal host.

A novel mycovirus named Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi hypovirus 2 (FodHV2) has been identified infecting isolates Fod 408 and Fod 409 of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi from Morocco. The genome of FodHV2 is 9,444 nucleotides long excluding the poly(A) tail, and has a single open reading frame encoding a polyprotein. The polyprotein contains three highly conserved domains of UDP glucose/sterol glucosyltransferase, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, and viral RNA helicase. In addition, particular residues of Cys, Hys, and Gly detected in the N-terminal region suggest the presence of the catalytic site of a highly diverged papain-like protease. Genomic organization, presence of particular conserved motifs, and phylogenetic analyses based on multiple alignments clearly grouped FodHV2 with the members of the family Hypoviridae. FodHV2 was transferred by hyphal anastomosis to a recipient HygR-tagged virus-free strain. The comparison of the infected and non-infected isogenic strains showed that FodHV2 did not alter the vegetative growth, neither the conidiation nor the virulence of its fungal host. Efficiency of FodHV2 transmission through the conidia was 100% in both the original and the recipient infected-isolates. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a hypovirus infecting the plant pathogen F. oxysporum, and also the first one of a hypovirus detected in a fungal strain from the African continent.

A novel mycovirus named Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi mitovirus 1 (FodMV1) has been identified infecting a strain of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi from Colombia. The genome of FodMV1 is 2313 nt long, and comprises a 172-nt 5’-UTR, a 2025-nt single ORF encoding an RdRp of 675 amino acid residues, and a 113-nt 3´-UTR. Homology BlastX searches identifies FodMV1 as a novel member of the genus Mitovirus in the family Narnaviridae. As the rest of mitoviruses, the genome of FodMV1 presents a high percentage of A+U (58.8%) and contains a number of UGA codons that encode the amino acid tryptophan rather than acting as stop codons as in the universal genetic code. Another common feature with other mitoviruses is that the 5′- and 3′-UTR regions of FodMV1 can be folded into potentially stable stem-loop structures. Result from phylogenetic analysis place FodMV1 in a different clade than the rest of mitoviruses described in other Fusarium spp. Incidence of FodMV1-infections in the collection of F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi isolates analyzed is relatively high. Of particular interest is the fact that FodMV1 has been detected infecting isolates from two geographical areas as distant as Spain and Colombia.
