However, the impact of the MERS epidemic on the Saudi economy is unknown.Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate the direct medical costs associated with the management of MERS cases at a tertiary referral hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.Methods: The study involved a retrospective chart review of confirmed cases of MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infections in a tertiary care referral center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from January 2015 to October 2018. The collected data included sociodemographic characteristics, medical information, and the cost of hospitalization of each patient as estimated by micro-costing.Results: A complete set of relevant information was available only for 24 of 44 identified MERS-CoV cases. Patients were mostly females, and the mean age was 52 years. Diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease were the most frequent comorbidities. The length of hospital stay varied from 1 to 31 days, averaging 4.96 ± 7.29 days. Two of the 24 patients died. The total cost of managing a MERS case at the hospital ranged from $1278.41 to $75,987.95 with a mean cost of $12,947.03 ± $19,923.14.Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the enormous expenses incurred by the Saudi health care system due to the MERS-CoV outbreak and the importance of developing an enforceable nationwide policy to control MERS-CoV transmission and infection.Keywords: Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, costs and cost analysis, Saudi Arabia

Viral respiratory infections, such as rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus are likely to be important in the development and exacerbation of asthma. In this study, we investigated the nasopharyngeal colonization in children with asthma to determine the prevalence of pathogens and their contribution to respiratory symptoms and airway resistance during winter. Methods: From December 2016 to March 2017, 50 nasopharyngeal specimens were collected from 18 patients (age, 5.0±1.1 years) with asthma and 9 specimens from 9 control children (age, 4.9±1.0 years). Samples were tested for 19 viruses and 7 bacteria, using multiplex real-time PCR. Respiratory disease markers included the Global Asthma Network Questionnaire, the Common-Cold Questionnaire, the Global Initiative for Asthma assessment of asthma control, and the airway resistance at 5 Hz by forced-oscillation technique. Results: The most commonly isolated organisms in both groups (patients and controls) were Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and rhinovirus. Most patients had multiple isolates (median, 3.5; range, 1–5), which changed during the study period. Types of isolates were 4 bacteria (S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, Bordetella pertussis, and Bordetella parapertussis) and 6 viruses (rhinovirus, enterovirus, metapneumovirus, adenovirus, coronaviruses, and parainfluenza viruses). Similar isolates, including influenza A-H3 virus and bocavirus, were detected in the controls. Of the 9 patients with “wheezing disturbing sleep ≥1 per week”, 6 had rhinovirus, 2 coronaviruses, and 1 no detectable viruses. Patients with mild common cold symptoms had significantly higher airway resistance at 5 Hz z-score (P=0.025). Conclusion: Multiple respiratory pathogens were isolated from many patients with asthma, which appeared to contribute to disease symptoms and airway resistance. Minimizing children’s exposure to respiratory pathogens might be beneficial, especially during winter. Mejoramiento participativo en maíz: su contribución en el empoderamiento comunitario en el municipio de Muqui, Brasil. El desarrollo de la estrategia del mejoramiento participativo, en las comunidades de pequeños agricultores ubicados en el municipio de Muqui, en el Estado de Espírito Santo, Brasil, influyó en la autosostenibilidad de la producción de semilla y en la obtención de variedades de maíz mejor adaptadas a sus sistemas de manejo Los agricultores de esta región vienen desarrollando, desde 1993, trabajos en el campo comunitario de semillas. A partir de 2001, como estrategias del mejoramiento participativo fueron desarrollados trabajos referentes al rescate de variedades locales y mejoradas de maíz, y ensayos de evaluación de variedades. Diez variedades fueron utilizadas en este trabajo: Sol da Manhã , Eldorado, BR 106, BR 473, BR 451, Saracura, Caiano de Sobrália, Palha Rôxa de Santa Catarina, Caiano de Espírito Santo y Fortaleza. Con excepción de las variedades BR 106, BR 473, BR 451 y Saracura, que fueron seleccionadas de forma convencional, las demás fueron seleccionadas con base en fitomejoramiento participativo. Fueron realizados tres ciclos de selección en cada una de esas variedades y las mismas fueron evaluadas en los años agrícolas de 2002/2003, 2003/2004 y 2004/2005, en ensayos en bloques al azar, con tres repeticiones y manejo orgánico. Las actividades de mejoramiento, en las comunidades de Muqui, fueran realizadas enfatizando la variedad Fortaleza, se empleó el esquema de selección masal estratificada. Los campos de semillas comunitarias se incrementaron, tanto en productividad como en la mayor participación de los agricultores, además de la participación en los ensayos y los campos de mejoramiento.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um estudo da Norma Regulamentadora do Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego, NR-28, “Fiscalização e Penalidades”, com produtores rurais do município de Diamantina, Estado de Minas Gerais, e, por meio de Ferramentas e Técnicas de Gerenciamento de Projetos conscientizá-los quanto à necessidade de organização de suas propriedades rurais. O total de multas que um proprietário que possui de 1-10 trabalhadores pagaria se todos os itens analisados não estiverem em conformidade com a norma seria R$ 5.801,5 (mínimo) e R$ 7.191,18 (máximo). Se na propriedade possuir de 11-25 trabalhadores os valores das multas ficam R$ 7.137,97 (mínimo) e R$ 8.503,21 (máximo). Com um bom planejamento é possível melhorar a infraestrutura de uma propriedade e preservar a segurança e saúde do produtor rural, depois das mudanças realizadas é recomendado mantê-las com o uso de ferramentas e técnicas de gerenciamento como o “checklist”, relatórios de auditoria e listas de verificação que fazem parte do gerenciamento da qualidade do projeto, visto que têm por finalidade buscar manter as adequações que foram feitas e buscar dar uma qualidade de trabalho melhor. Cabe ao produtor querer fazer as mudanças na propriedade para ter um trabalho mais seguro.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da cobertura solteira e consorciada de três leguminosas arbóreas em aléias, suplementadas ou não com biofertilizante bovino, nos aspectos de nutrição da planta e produção e qualidade do fruto de abóbora. A área experimental foi constituída de sete aléias de leguminosas arbóreas plantadas em fileiras duplas de 24,5 m de comprimento e 6,0 m entre si, com área total de 147 m2 por parcela, onde cada aléia correspondia a um tratamento: controle (T), Ingá (I), Sombreiro (S), Leucena (L), Ingá + Sombreiro (I+S), Ingá + Leucena (I+L) e Sombreiro + Leucena (S+L). As subparcelas foram constituídas por duas doses de biofertilizante bovino, (0 e 1,5 L/cova diluídos em 5 L de água) aplicados aos 40, 50 e 60 dias após a semeadura, sendo tomadas duas plantas por repetição. Os frutos foram colhidos e levados para as análises biométricas e de qualidade, sendo avaliados o número de frutos por planta, peso médio (kg) e espessura da polpa (cm). O experimento foi instalado no esquema de parcelas subdivididas, no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com três repetições. O consórcio de leguminosas arbóreas com a abóbora da cultivar Leite, se mostrou eficiente em parâmetros como disponibilização de N e K, matéria orgânica e biomassa para proteção do solo. As coberturas das leguminosas arbóreas comportaram-se de modo bem distinto, sendo as coberturas solteiras mais significativas em relação à produtividade e às consorciadas, produziram frutos com maior peso e espessura de polpa. Houve acréscimo significativo no peso médio dos frutos com a aplicação do biofertilizante bovino associado às coberturas consorciadas.

Na Região do Planalto Norte Catarinense há carência de alternativas de uso da terra no inverno e, ao mesmo tempo, há poucas informações sobre o desempenho agronômico de espécies invernais para produção de óleo, que podem ser usadas na obtenção de biodiesel. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo e outras características agronômicas de canola, crambe, nabo-forrageiro e linho. A cultura que apresentou maior produtividade de grãos e de óleo foi a canola e a menor foi observada no nabo-forrageiro.

Os objetivos desse trabalho foram avaliar a produtividade de forragem em três genótipos de milheto, sob diferentes doses de cama de aviário e verificar o efeito residual desse fertilizante orgânico. Foi conduzido um experimento em Papanduva, SC, nas safras 2008/09 e 2009/10. Na primeira safra foram avaliados três genótipos de milheto, uma variedade comum e dois genótipos melhorados (ADR 500 e LAB 733), cultivados em quatro doses de cama de aviário (0, 4, 8 e 12 t ha-1). Em sucessão, foi cultivado um consórcio de aveiapreta + ervilhaca e, na sequência, milheto comum para verificar o efeito residual do fertilizante orgânico. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos completos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Nas duas safras estivais, avaliou-se a produção de forragem pelo milheto por meio de cortes. No consórcio de aveia-preta + ervilhaca foi avaliada a produção de fi tomassa seca total. Houve interação entre genótipos de milheto e doses de cama de aviário para o total de fitomassa seca aérea, sendo que os genótipos melhorados demonstraram maior resposta produtiva frente ao aumento da dose de cama de aviário. Houve efeito residual significativo do fertilizante orgânico nos cultivos posteriores, constituídos pelo consórcio de aveia-preta + ervilhaca e milheto.

Característcas morfológicas e fsiológicas de plantas de feijão podem afetar a habilidade compettva com plantas infestantes. O objetvo deste trabalho foi avaliar a compettvidade de cultvares de feijão do grupo Carioca com plantas daninhas. Inicialmente, foi realizado um experimento no ano agrícola 2010/11 em Papanduva, SC, para verifcar a variabilidade entre cultvares de feijão Carioca quanto a algumas característcas das suas plantas. Foi utlizado o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetções. Os tratamentos foram consttuídos pelos seguintes cultvares: SCS202 Guará, BRS Horizonte, IPR Jurit, Pérola, IPR Siriri, IPR Saracura e FTS Magnífco. Aos 6, 14, 18, 25 e 32 dias após a emergência foram avaliadas as variáveis altura de plantas, cobertura do solo pelas plantas de feijão, massa seca de hastes e folhas e, na colheita, a produtvidade de grãos. No ano agrícola 2011/12, os mesmos cultvares foram avaliados na presença e na ausência de plantas daninhas, adotando metodologia similar à do período 2010/11. Observou-se correlação positva entre perda de produtvidade de feijão em função da interferência e do acúmulo de massa seca pelas plantas daninhas. Não foi possível identfcar uma característica de planta nos cultivares avaliados que estimasse a perda de produtividade de grãos em razão da interferência de plantas daninhas.
