Durante las últimas décadas la presión sobre la disponibilidad se ha acentuado debido a los cambios ambientales observados como resultado del desarrollo industrial. En este trabajo se analizan la evolución y variabilidad recientes (1961-2005) de los recursos hídricos superficiales –el caudal en los ríos– en una de las cuencas hidrográficas de mayor entidad de la Península Ibérica, y los factores ambientales responsables de su evolución. Los resultados del trabajo muestran un descenso notable y generalizado en los caudales en la región, acompañado de un cambio en los regímenes fluviales. La evolución del clima, con unas precipitaciones muy variables pero sin tendencias notables a largo plazo, y unas temperaturas en aumento, explica en parte, pero no en su totalidad, el descenso hidrológico. En las cabeceras fluviales se ha detectado un incremento significativo de la cubierta vegetal durante el periodo de estudio, el cual parece estar participando en gran medida en el descenso de caudales. Por otro lado, la regulación por medio de embalses está incrementando en la cuenca y con ello contribuyendo al cambio hidrológico en la región. Los resultados obtenidos ofrecen la base conceptual para proyectar la disponibilidad futura de los recursos hídricos en los escenarios de mayor escasez como consecuencia del cambio climático venidero. Non-major science students make up an important, yet understudied, part of our public, given that they constitute tomorrow's voters, workers, consumers, and policy-makers. Expecting that non-majors may benefit from a module connecting COVID-19 to community education, we implemented a novel E-service-learning module in light of the transition from an in-person course to an online platform. Our 4-week module included expert-led lectures, assigned digital infographics about COVID-19 safety precautions, and a required post-reflection assignment summarizing their learning gains. Out of 112 enrolled students, 87 consented to have their reflections analyzed and 8 students chose to participate in additional one-on-one online interviews. In an effort to determine which parts of our module garnered the most student commentary, we grouped post-reflection and interview data into four categories: service-learning infographic, service-learning guest lectures, information on COVID-19, and the broader implications of COVID-19. While 13% of students explicitly referenced infographics in their reflections, a far greater proportion (37%) explicitly referenced learning gains related to the expert-led lectures. Based on these findings, we encourage other educators to continue to explore the impact of E-service-learning content and assignments to help maximize learning in an online classroom environment during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Matthews Description An account of the resource Abstract Vaccines and genetic resistance offer potential future alternatives to the exclusive use of anthelmintics to control gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN). Here, a Teladorsagia circumcincta prototype vaccine was administered to two sheep breeds which differ in their relative levels of resistance to infection with GIN. Vaccination of the more susceptible Canaria Sheep (CS) breed induced significant reductions in worm length and numbers of worm eggs in utero (EIU) when compared to control CS sheep. In the more resistant Canaria Hair Breed (CHB), although vaccination induced a reduction in all parasitological parameters analysed, differences between vaccinated and control sheep were not statistically significant. Such interactions between sheep breed and vaccination may allow better integrated control of GIN in future.
