                <text>Introduction: A phenomenological approach is proposed to monitor the propagation of the first waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. 				 					Method: A large set of data collected during the first months of 2020 is compiled into a series of semi-logarithmic plots, for a selection of 32 countries from the five continents. 				 					Results: Three regimes are identified in the propagation of an epidemic wave: a pre-epidemic regime 1, an exponential-growth regime 2, and a resorption regime 3. A two-parameters scaling of the first-wave death variation reported in China is used to fit the first-wave data reported in other countries. Comparison is made between the propagation of the pandemic in different countries, which are classified into four groups, from Group A where the pandemic first waves were contained efficiently, to Group D where the pandemic first waves widely spread. All Asian countries considered here, where fast and efficient measures have been applied, are in Group A. Group D is composed of Western-European countries and the United States of America (USA), where late decisions and confused political communication (pandemic seriousness, protection masks, herd immunity, etc.) led to a large number of deaths. 				 					Discussion: The threat of resurging epidemic waves following a lift of lockdown measures is discussed. The results obtained in Asian countries from group A, as Hong Kong and South Korea, are highlighted, and the measures taken there are presented as examples that other countries may follow.</text>

                <text>The article is aimed at analyzing the processes of establishing smart industry in the leading countries, defining the prospects determined by its development in the world, as well as the place and role of Ukraine in these processes. The fundamental feature of the modern period is identified, which consists in the structural change of the world economy, caused by changes in technological orders. The end of the latest economic cycle coincided with the outbreak of a pandemic of a previously unknown virus (COVID-19), leading to the worst economic crisis of recent decades. New challenges, risks and threats are formulated, associated with the change of structure of the world economy, and, accordingly, fundamentally new processes of competition, which take place in the conditions of changes in technology, communications, etc. Features of the industrial smart enterprise – flexible cyberphysical production facility, which provides accurate settings on the consumer and is based on the use of big data as a component of the smart industry – are disclosed. The experience of forming strategies of the smart industry construction by the leading countries: Germany, the United States and China, which will play a leading role in the formation of the new model of «reasonable growth» of the world economy in the near future, is analyzed. Also considered are the features of the EU’s national strategic programs on the digitalization of industry and the construction of Industry 4.0, formed in response to the main challenge of our time - the insufficient pace of digitalization of industrial sectors along with the development of innovation. New perspectives, opportunities and problems related to the development of the smart industry in Ukraine are defined. A number of proposals are presented, the implementation of which will help to overcome the current economic crisis and Ukraine’s exit on the trajectory of stable economic growth.</text>

                <text>The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on virtually all aspects of the healthcare system, including oncology clinical trials. The purpose of this review is to describe the impact of the pandemic on national breast cancer clinical trials. Of the 61 breast cancer-specific cooperative group breast cancer clinical trials open to accrual during the pandemic, 32% of them received supplementary tailored guidance regarding current and foreseeable challenges for clinical sites and investigators due to COVID-19. Many clinical trial sites reported decreases in enrollment and accrual, drastic disruptions to protocol, and challenges related to research infrastructure, staff burden, and assuring social distancing. The challenges early in pandemic led to many operational changes in clinical trials, including use of electronic consent for enrollment, telemedicine visits, and mail order pharmacy. The pandemic highlighted aspects of breast cancer clinical trial that could be modernized while maintaining research integrity.</text>

                <text>BackgroundCoronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread explosively worldwide since the beginning of 2020. According to a multinational consensus statement from the Fleischner Society, computed tomography (CT) is a relevant screening tool due to its higher sensitivity for detecting early pneumonic changes. However, physicians are extremely occupied fighting COVID-19 in this era of worldwide crisis. Thus, it is crucial to accelerate the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic tool to support physicians.             ObjectiveWe aimed to rapidly develop an AI technique to diagnose COVID-19 pneumonia in CT images and differentiate it from non–COVID-19 pneumonia and nonpneumonia diseases.             MethodsA simple 2D deep learning framework, named the fast-track COVID-19 classification network (FCONet), was developed to diagnose COVID-19 pneumonia based on a single chest CT image. FCONet was developed by transfer learning using one of four state-of-the-art pretrained deep learning models (VGG16, ResNet-50, Inception-v3, or Xception) as a backbone. For training and testing of FCONet, we collected 3993 chest CT images of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, other pneumonia, and nonpneumonia diseases from Wonkwang University Hospital, Chonnam National University Hospital, and the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology public database. These CT images were split into a training set and a testing set at a ratio of 8:2. For the testing data set, the diagnostic performance of the four pretrained FCONet models to diagnose COVID-19 pneumonia was compared. In addition, we tested the FCONet models on an external testing data set extracted from embedded low-quality chest CT images of COVID-19 pneumonia in recently published papers.             ResultsAmong the four pretrained models of FCONet, ResNet-50 showed excellent diagnostic performance (sensitivity 99.58%, specificity 100.00%, and accuracy 99.87%) and outperformed the other three pretrained models in the testing data set. In the additional external testing data set using low-quality CT images, the detection accuracy of the ResNet-50 model was the highest (96.97%), followed by Xception, Inception-v3, and VGG16 (90.71%, 89.38%, and 87.12%, respectively).             ConclusionsFCONet, a simple 2D deep learning framework based on a single chest CT image, provides excellent diagnostic performance in detecting COVID-19 pneumonia. Based on our testing data set, the FCONet model based on ResNet-50 appears to be the best model, as it outperformed other FCONet models based on VGG16, Xception, and Inception-v3.</text>

                <text>In Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it is important to evaluate disease activity and investigate possible biomarkers. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the relationship between disease activity and serum levels of possible immune activation marker neopterin in patients with COVID-19. The study enrolled 45 patients (23 females, 51.1%) treated for COVID-19. The patients were divided into two groups according to their clinical presentation: those who recovered quickly (Group 1) and those who worsened progressively (Group 2). The neopterin and C-reactive protein levels were high in all patients on admission. In Group 1, neopterin concentrations and serum neopterin/creatinine ratios were significantly higher on admission compared to Day 14 of the disease, whereas in Group 2, levels were significantly higher at Day 14 of the disease than on admission. Neopterin levels at admission were significantly higher in Group 1. The serum neopterin concentrations at admission were markedly higher in patients with a derived neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) &gt; 2.8 compared to those with a dNLR ≤ 2.8 (p &lt; 0.05). Serum neopterin levels can be used as a prognostic biomarker in predicting disease activity in COVID-19.</text>

                <text>The New Caledonia archipelago is known for its high level of endemism in both faunal and floral groups. Thus far, only 12 species of non-marine ostracods have been reported. After three expeditions to the main island of the archipelago (Grande Terre), about four times as many species were found, about half of which are probably new. Here, we describe a new species, Cyprinotus drubea sp. nov., which is characterised mainly by the hyper-developed dorsal hump on the right valve, much larger than in any other known Recent species in this genus. After a literature study of the other presumed species in Cyprinotus Brady, 1886, we retain seven Recent species in the genus, including the present new species. Cyprinotus crenatus (Turner, 1893), C. dentatus (Sharpe, 1910), C. flavescens Brady, 1898, C. inconstans Furtos, 1936, C. newmexicoensis Ferguson, 1967, C. ohanopecoshensis Ferguson, 1966, C. pellucidus (Sharpe, 1897), C. scytodus (Dobbin, 1941) and C. sulphurous Blake, 1931 are here all referred to the genus Heterocypris s. lat. Claus, 1892. Cyprinotus unispinifera Furtos, 1936 is assigned to the genus Cypricercus Sars, 1895. Cyprinotus tenuis Henry, 1923, C. fuscus Henry, 1919 and C. carinatus (King, 1855) are here classified as doubtful species. A checklist of the 14 non-marine ostracods, now including Cyprinotus drubea sp. nov. and Cypris granulata (Daday, 1910), thus far reported from New Caledonia, is provided. Herpetocypris caledonica Méhes, 1939 and H. caledonica var. minor Méhes, 1939 are synonymised with Candonocypris novaezelandiae (Baird, 1843).</text>

A pesar de la importancia que tiene el comportamiento proambiental en la pro­tección del ambiente, existen pocos estudios que expliquen la formación de este compor­tamiento en los operadores turísticos. El presente estudio investiga los factores que influyen en la intención de los operadores turísticos del parque nacional “Arrecife de Puerto Morelos” de comportarse de una manera más proambiental. Se aplicó la teoría del comportamiento planeado para evaluar si las actitudes, las normas subjetivas y el control de compor­tamiento percibido predecían la intención de comportamiento proambiental de los operadores turísticos. Se recolectaron datos cuantitativos de una muestra de 165 infor­mantes; los datos se analizaron mediante el modelado de ecuaciones estructurales (SEM). Los resultados revelaron que la variable más importante es el control de comportamiento percibido, seguida de las normas subjetivas. Contrario a lo esperado, las actitudes no se asociaron de manera significativa con la intención de comportamiento proambiental de los operadores turísticos. Finalmente, con base en los resultados, se presentan estrategias para contribuir a una mejora en el comportamiento proambiental de los operadores turísticos.</text>

                <text>A construção do Complexo Industrial Portuário de Suape, entre os anos de 1979/84, modificou as características ecológicas da área, sendo os maiores impactos observados no estuário do rio Ipojuca. Visando avaliar a ação desses impactos sobre a comunidade fitoplanctônica através da comparação com estudos realizados antes na área, foram analisadas amostras de plâncton coletadas em uma estação, durante um ciclo de 24 horas, nos períodos chuvoso (agosto/90) e seco (janeiro/91). As amostras foram coletadas pela técnica do fracionamento e com rede de plâncton de 65mm de abertura de malha. Coletas de parâmetros hidrológicos foram realizadas concomitantemente. Foram identificados 97 táxons, destacando-se como espécies muito freqüentes nos períodos chuvoso e seco: Gyrosigma balticum, Oscillatoria princeps, Chaetoceros lorenzianus, Climacosphenia moniligera e Licmophora abbreviata. A densidade fitoplanctônica variou entre 142.000 cels.l-1 a 1.789.000 cels.l-1 predominando a fração do nanofitoplâncton. O maior florescimento ocorreu no período seco, nos horários de maior insolação e maré enchente. A diversidade específica foi alta (&gt; 3 bits.cel.l-1) explicada pela heterogeneidade ambiental. A comunidade fitoplanctônica apresentou mudanças quali-quantitativas após a implantação do Porto. Agora, predominam espécies marinhas litorais, devido à pequena profundidade e elevado hidrodinamismo na área e um decréscimo de 70% na densidade celular, ao contrário do que ocorria antes da construção do Porto, quando foi detectado a maior ocorrência de espécies marinhas planctônicas e maior número de células/litro.</text>

                <text>The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a global health problem. Although the respiratory system is the main impaired organ, conjunctivitis is one of its common findings. However, it is not yet understood if SARS-CoV-2 can infect the eye and if the ocular surface can be a potential route of SARS-CoV-2 transmissions. Our review focuses on the viral entry mechanisms to give a better understanding of the interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and the eye. We highlighted findings that give evidence for multiple potential receptors of SARS-CoV-2 on the ocular surface. Additionally, we focused on data concerning the detection of viral RNA and its spike protein in the various ocular tissues from patients. However, the expression level seemed to be relatively low compared to the respiratory tissues as a result of a unique environment surrounding the ocular surface and the innate immune response of SARS-CoV-2. Nevertheless, our review suggests the ocular surface as a potential route for SARS-CoV-2 transmission, and as a result of this study we strongly recommend the protection of the eyes for ophthalmologists and patients at risk.</text>

Undergraduate medical programs should be better equipped to anticipate and plan for changes in future clinical practice and learning needs of the students. The COVID-19 outbreak and the recent epidemics of new and emerging infections have brought into sharp focus the importance of subjects, such as infectious diseases, infection control, public health, occupational health and virology in medical school curricula. A review of the medical curriculum at PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences revealed that the time allotted for teaching these subjects is much less than that allotted for teaching non-communicable diseases and other subjects. The changing health paradigm requires medical teaching to be continuously redefined and updated. Given the reduced amount of teaching time allotted for subjects, such as infectious diseases, infection control, public health, occupational health and virology, it might be timely to review and recalibrate the teaching hours of these subjects in all the medical curricula, to better prepare our doctors facing the challenges of future epidemics and pandemics.Keywords: pandemic, infectious diseases, curriculum revision</text>
