The efficient use of water and the environmental diversity are crucial to the balance and sustainability of the organic production system of tomatoes. The present study aimed to evaluate the organic production of tomato cultivated as a single crop and in consortium with coriander, under sprinkler and drip irrigation. The experiment was carried out at an organic production area on the Federal District of Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with treatments arranged in a 2 x 2 factorial (two irrigation systems x two cropping schemes). No significant interaction between the both factors occurred, and there was no significant effect of the cropping scheme over the evaluated variables. Although the crop cycle has been reduced when tomato was drip irrigated, the fruit yield was not affected by the irrigation systems. The larger reduction in the stand of plants observed under sprinkler irrigation has been compensated by an increase in the number of fruits per plant, without a change on the fruit mass. The smaller volume of soil explored by the tomato roots associated with the higher incidence of South American tomato pinworm (Tuta absoluta) and mainly powdery mildew (Leveillula taurica) may have limited the yield of drip irrigated tomato. The fruit decay rate on sprinkle irrigated plants was twice the rate found on the drip irrigated system.</text>

Bemisia tabaci.  fungicidas,  insecticidas. Abstract: A colombian isolate of Lecanicillium lecanii formulated as dispersible granules WG, has shown high efficiency to control Bemisia tabaci in cotton and eggplant crops. Considering that, the objetive of this work was to determine the in vitro compatibility of biopesticide based on L.lecanii with agrochemicals (insecticides and fungicides) that are most frequently used in tobacco and eggplant crops. In vitro compatibility of L. lecanii with agrochemicals was determinated by germination (%) and Colony Forming Units (CFU) in the presence of pesticides and also estimating the inhibitory concentration 10 (IC10). Each agrochemical was evaluated at the recommended dose, a half and a quarter of it. For the three doses tested (Benomyl®, Vitavax®, Ridomil® and Manzate®) were not compatible with L. lecanii, because these inhibited germination and Colony Forming Units of the fungus. Confidor® did not inhibit viability compared to control treatment, and it was considered compatible with the biopesticide. When the recommended dose (Oportune®, Actara®, Match® and Malathion®)was used, the germination of the L. lecanii was lower than 80%, then these products were classified as non-compatible with the biopesticide based on L. lecanii. The only agrochemical that was compatible in vitro with L. lecanii was Confidor®. However, is necesary to evaluate the in vivo effect of agrochemicals commonly used by farmers on L. lecanii, in order to develop and establish integrated management strategies for the control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.   Key words: entomopathogen, Bemisia tabaci, fungicide, insecticide.</text>

This paper presents the results of a research which main goal was to describe the context and practices related to the use of pesticides among farmers in the community of Serrinha do Mendanha, Campo Grande, County of Rio de Janeiro. The methodological proposal had a qualitative approach and data was collected through a semi-structured questionnaire. Thirty eight farmers participated in this research. Socio-economic profile shows elderly people working in agriculture, expressive percentile of illiteracy and low income. Despite the natural approach to the use of pesticides, which is a routine to these families, most informants believe that pesticides can affect their health, show some concern about the consumers and would like to know alternatives. These findings point to the possibility of change in agricultural practices. It is not a matter of simply offering information that in some way they already possess; it means developing strategies to reduce or even quit the use of pesticides in plantations.</text>

This article explores this issue in a study about the Cooperativa Mista de Produção, Industrialização e Comercialização de Biocombustíveis do Brasil Ltda. (COOPERBIO), created in 2005 by rural social movements in the Northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul. After indicating the general features of biofuels production and describing the region, the article presents the actions towards ethanol and oil production, by groups of families, coupled with food production according to principles of agroecology. The possibilities represented by such initiative to small family farmers and to local development are discussed.</text>
