<text>Faba bean have been grown in Portugal for a long time and locally adapted populations are still maintained on farm. The genetic diversity of four Portuguese faba bean populations that are still cultivated in some regions of the country was evaluated using the Inter Retrotransposons Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP) technique. It was shown that molecular markers based on retrotransposons previously identified in other species can be efficiently used in the genetic variability assessment of Vicia faba. The IRAP experiment targeting Athila yielded the most informative banding patterns. Cluster analysis using the neighbor-joining algorithm generated a dendrogram that clearly shows the distribution pattern of V. faba samples. The four equina accessions are separated from each other and form two distinct clades while the two major faba bean accessions are not unequivocally separated by the IRAP. Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis of sequences amplified by IRAP Athila revealed a wide distribution throughout V. faba chromosomes, confirming the whole-genome coverage of this molecular marker. Morphological characteristics were also assessed through cluster analysis of seed characters using the unweighted pair group method arithmetic average (UPGMA) and principal component analysis (PCA), showing a clear discrimination between faba bean major and equina groups. It was also found that the seed character most relevant to distinguish accessions was 100 seed weight. Seed morphological traits and IRAP evaluation give similar results supporting the potential of IRAP analysis for genetic diversity studies.</text>

The effects of organic versus conventional farming methods in soil fertility and intercropping yields (Phaseolus vulgaris x Sorghum sp.) was studied throughout three growing seasons (1995A-1996A). The methodoly used to conduct the study was to divide the field into parcels, aplying natural vs chemical disease controls, monoculture vs intercropping and manure vs chemical fertilizers. As well as other experience carried out in 1994, neither bean growing season presented significant differences between the two agricultural systems, although the yield of sorghum in the organic farming system was superior to that of the conventional system during 1995B, probably due to edaphic effects. The Efficient Land Use Index<br />(IET) were superior to 1 during all over the experience, showing the benefits of the intrercropping systems. There was increases on pH, exchangecationiccapacity, totalcations and total soil saturation that also increasedsoil fertility from lower to medium levels in both organical and conventional systems.<br /></text>

A B S T R A C T In semi-arid regions such as the county of Aiuaba (CE) the agricultural productivity is more likely to be influenced by edaphoclimatic factors, what beyond of the importance of the producer’s technological level, also influence directly in agriculture. The objective this work was to evaluate the influence of climate variability on the local rainfall and consequently on agricultural production, especially of maize, beans and cassava, account for the greatest performances in the income of farmers of Aiuaba (CE). To reach these objectives were used statistical methods as Correlation and Analysis of Wavelet. The results of the Wavelet analysis pointed cycles of 5-6 years (ENSO) for the occurrence of rainy years, a consequence of several different temporal scales, while in dry years were observed cycles between 4 and 6 years (ENSO), showing that the ENSO scale influence on all series of rainfall. In the absence of association with other timescales occurred dry years. Correlations between rainfall and all production variables were high and with statistical significance, showing only small correlations between rainfall and plant and harvested area for cassava, only variables not statistically significant. This study showed that the information generated for the city are useful for various industries like agriculture and socioeconomic. It was also noted that climate variability has significant effects on the production of local family farmers. Keywords: Climate variability, Family farming, Correlation, Wavelets, ENSO.</text>
